Mic'd up ump dealing with a pissed off manager

Ickster says...

It's funny, but I always sort of assumed the manager / ump screaming matches were just a kind of pro-forma show, like one of the unwritten rules of baseball.

This argument wasn't at all like I was expecting.

Okay, so many questions as I don't do baseball much.

First, why would he throw the ball so far behind the batter? Just to walk him? Whenever I've seen them walk a batter, the catcher just stands and they just throw high and over to the side. Why would he be ejected for walking a batter? Batters are walked all the time. What is the situation where you can't walk a batter? Is it the way he's walking the batter being far off normal?

Best fake soccer dive (fall) to draw a winning penalty shot

Lukio says...

The reason (traditionally) is that soccer does not have many long interruptions, like American football or Baseball. Free-Kick, Throw-In, Change-ins, even Penalty shots - everything happens quite fast and barely has influence on the game time of 90 minutes. There is only one longer break in-between. So the 3 Refs on the field usually have 1 other Ref standing on the sidelines who will give his overview input on things they may have missed. He is the only one who would be able to evaluate video material - but that would have to happen extremely fast, with barely any discussion.

Where the hell is Ronaldo?

Why doesn't soccer have instant replay for the refs? All I can come up with is they like the spectacle and outrage of blatant floppers getting awarded free kicks. Without that outrage they would have to invent a new excuse to riot.

New Rule: Distinction Deniers

Good points Bill.

Next time I'm breaking some dudes leg with a baseball bat, I'll be sure to remind him that he's not being murdered.

But hey, congrats on one thing. I was kinda unsure about Sam Bee's video until I saw this... now I'm 100% behind her.

So let me mansplain the fuck outta this.
Yes, rape is worse than groping.
No, no one gives a fuck about your opinion.
Yes, some drugs fuck you up more than others.
No, that analogy doesn't fucking apply here.

Honestly, the more I watch Maher, the more I'm convinced he's actually a fucking moron who, by sheer coincidence, happens to agree with some smart people on some things, but when left to his own devices, hasn't a fucking clue.

The senator is EXACTLY right. Right now, we don't need to have a conversation about the varying levels of how fucked up groping or harassment or rape is. If and when people are being sentenced to death and/or extreme prison terms, yeah, let's talk about proportionate response. Right now, let's just keep telling dudes (and be honest, it's mostly dudes) STOP BEING WEIRD, GROPEY OR RAPEY. It's just not fucking cool.

And if it takes "ruining someone's career" to do that... well, boo fucking hoo.

And as for the people claiming trial by media, I agree, that's fucked up. And when one of the accused people actually denies what they've done... I'll happily give them the benefit of the doubt.

I've not had much of anything to do with baseball in a long while - what's with the extra flap on the helmet? Jaw protection against being beaned?

Pres. Trump Tweets Vid of Himself Physically Attacking CNN

MilkmanDan says...

I agree that a disturbed person with more power is a bigger problem. To go straight for the Godwin's Law example, there have probably been people more evil and messed up than Hitler in the history of Earth, but very few had the power and opportunity to act on that evil to the magnitude he did.

However, you brought up magnitude of problems and compared the two as "equally disturbed". The Republican Congressman (with admittedly more power/influence) "body-slammed" a reporter. The Democrat nutcase shot up 6 people and (I think) didn't manage to kill any of them, but not for lack of trying.

We don't really know what was going on in either persons' heads when they did these things. What led up to them, etc. Maybe the reporter had been doggedly following and questioning/harassing the Congressman to such an extent that he snapped. Happens quite a lot with paparazzi, and we tend to give the celebrity targets a lot of benefit of the doubt in those cases. The only long-term result of the bodyslam incident that I know of is that the reporter's glasses were broken. Glasses can be repaired or replaced. Bullet wounds are rather tougher to fix.

However my main point isn't to get into a dick-measuring contest about who did more harm or who is more fucked up. My point is that the person entirely responsible in either incident is known. GOP Congressman physically assaulted a reporter of his own volition. Democrat nutcase shot up that baseball practice of his own volition. Those individuals are 100% responsible for what they did, no matter who or what they might claim drove them to their actions. Just like it isn't Ozzy Osbourne's fault when some nutter offs themselves after listening to his song "Suicide Solution", or John Carmack's fault for Columbine even though Klebold and Harris liked playing Doom.

Sure. But the Republican that was referenced isn't some whack-job nobody that is simply a registered Republican, he's a Representative in the US Congress.

When the powerless and disturbed lash out violently, it's unfortunate. When a person equally disturbed and violent has real power, it's a much bigger problem.
