Japan's strangest man

Numinar says...

This guy is awesome. He is getting fit and making some awesome 'tube copy. What makes me sad is his apartment, which is even worse than the one I had in Japan. My wife and I were able to fit furniture in it and even use a real bed! (Though folding it up makes more sense, this dude does not even have a cupboard for his futon!) And we had a balcony to store all our rubbish whilst we worked out how to dispose of it without bringing down great(er) gaijin shame on ourselves.

Gorgeous a Capella Rendition of Biebl's Ave Maria

Joseph Jennings, the creator of Chanticleer, used to work with my choir, so I got the opportunity to usher at one of their concerts. We sat on the balcony by ourselves, where the acoustics were best. When they sang this piece, I cried through the entire second half of it. I have never been so moved by music. The live experience is, of course, MUCH more powerful. One of the tenors in this performance isn't blending as well as he might, and the group takes a long breath near the end that detracts from the climax. If you really want to hear it at it's best (live performances excluded), listen to this:

The sound quality isn't great, but it's still achingly beautiful.

And what happens if you leave your favourite windowbox on the balcony when you close it? It very slowly catapults your best flower display into your living room. Of course you can have a bit of an Austin Powers moment when you realise what is happening "Noooooooooooooooooooooo...ooooooooooooooooooooooooo..."

I doubt very much that this costs more, or is more difficult, than having a balcony added to an existing building. It takes less time to deploy than installing a balcony, too... small price to pay. (Are Americans so unwilling to wait for anything that they can't wait one minute - less, in fact - for it to deploy?) Plus you need planning permission for a balcony addition, I would imagine, and this might be easier to get permission for.
A drawback might be drainage, and the fact that when you withdraw it, any water on the floor would end up in your room.

What are you even thinking??? This is not just a "window" they put into the hole in a building. This has to be engineered into the building prior to construction. Think about the loads involved.

And yes, fucking balconies are super cheap and quick when you are building a new building compared to installing these monstrosities. The only benefit I can see is architectural photos of the building when all the windows are close, or perhaps when some are open.

Besides, I can't think of too many places where anyone would leave the room open air without even a screen. Maybe they don't have insects in europe. Imagine when the motors on these thing break in 5-10 years.

It would be like 100x cheaper to just install the same apt windows as a sliding door and put a permanent balocny out there. I really can't understand the appeal other then the building looks cleaner when all the windows are closed.

Note: when in balcony mode, bugs, birds and everything.. it's open air. Also, all your A/C just went out the window... When in window mode you can't open it for any fresh air. Also you cannot clean the windows except with exterior rope and basket. Finally, if you left that open during the rain storm.. OMG.. gallons of water flooding the place.
