Harrowing Footage of LGBT Beaten and Humiliated in Russia

chingalera says...

No sir. Sensible sane and rational people(sarcasm intended) would treat sponsorship of Olympic games similarly if sayyy, the Olympic committee used child labor or trashed the environment building the arena and got corporate sponsors behind them....Wouldn't we then have to listen to the same type of gimps, the same who trash their own powers of reason, come out of the wood-works to protest that horrifying scenario!?? Watch them boycott coco-cola and mc donalds then?

WHAT CREATES THE LOWER-CLASS PEOPLE anyway, duh???

All governments work the same dude, a few people force the masses to perform according to their rules or be fined or imprisoned.

Draaakonian bullshit.

Personally, I boycott coke and mc donalds because their food is non-nutritive shit that causes diabetic epidemics in adults and children-Less is more.

Besides, corporate sponsorship of anything is a waste of resources when the same could be used for advancement both physically and spiritually of the entire species.

It's 2014 sir, and pretty much ALL governments and law enforcement works on the same arcane model, be they called democracies or dictatorships....po-tay-to, fucking pa-tah-to

How does this have anything to do with McDonald's, Coca Cola, and Corporate sponsorship of the olympics? Many low class people in america or every other country are the same kind of asshole...the only difference is how the governments and law enforcement work.

Chris Hayes takes on Obama's addiction to oil (Keystone XL)

radx says...

"They don't all agree with it, which is why it's not science."

If anyone is looking for absolute certainty, they should turn to their priests, their gurus, their investment brokers, their politicians, their snake-oil salesmen.

The only absolute certainty science can provide is in proving a wrong. Everything else is probabilities and exclusions, all the way to the end.

The fact that the public expects a proof of absolute certainty of a positive is maddening to me. Any assumed equivalency between "not knowing for sure" with "not knowing anything" is frustrating to no end.

Scientists have to enter the public arena and proclaim certainty to match the public's vernacular. If they were to stick to probabilities the way they do within their own realms, they'd fail to communicate the essence of their findings. Just look at how warped the common understanding of "theory" has become.

----------------------------

"Consensus, I repeat, is not science."

Everything scientific that is being communicated publicy is a consensus. The fact that statements of less than absolute, unanimous consensus are met with suspicion and a diminishment of trust in the process itself is one of the reasons why science cannot be properly discussed on the public stage. They cannot present the fuzzy edges of their findings as that would require a qualification in the form of probabilities. A consensus, the greatest common denominator if you will, is the best that can be done. The IPCC's reports are a magnificent illustration of that very issue.

And why can't we talk about the fuzzy edges? About scenarios and their corresponding probabilities? Because people are suspicious, even scared of numbers. Math as a subject is made fun of, a lack of mathematical understanding has become something to be proud of. An intuitive understanding of probabilities is the exception, not the norm. As soon as a prediction doesn't come true, people tend to dismiss the underlying theory, without any regard to the previously attached probability.

That's the climate the scientists have to endure when trying to present their work to the public.

Best Shootout goal ever in ICE Hockey?

MilkmanDan says...

I love the NHL, and I always get annoyed with advertising when I see Premier League Football (soccer). NHL sweaters/jerseys have some great designs, with standouts really exploring the theme/logo/imagery of the team. And then you've got Premiere League jerseys, with a MASSIVE chest logo shilling for some corporate sponsor and a tiny team logo in a font/height about 1/10th the size of that sponsor logo. No "I" in team, but apparently there are plenty of $'s.

Then again, I guess that even in the NHL there are advertising logos on every single square inch of the boards above the ice surface and under the glass.

Not to mention that damn near every single arena/field is now known as [Insert Bank/Corporation/Conglomeration name here] Center. Remember when those places used to be named for great players or coaches attached to the franchise, or some other thematic element of the team or city? I guess big props are due for Detroit's Joe Louis Arena and NYC's Madison Square Garden, the only non-shill NHL venues I can come up with off the top of my head (did I miss any?).

Sometimes I get all disgusted with how you can't go 2 goddamn seconds without having somebody try to sell you something. Yay capitalism, I guess.

Sorry, /rant off.

Xbox One Kinect Calls Foul on Bad Language

newtboy says...

Ahhh, but if we're going to use the 'would it happen in real life?' postulate, I would point out that he was commenting as if he were a commentator, not as a player, so why was one player/team penalized?
I don't know why that would be a decent reason for this kind of thing either, most games are NOT like real life in most ways, even this game has many elements in it that are completely unrealistic in order to make it a fun, playable game. If the Xbox1 is going for this kind of unrealistic realism across the board, I think I'll stick with my ps3. I play games for fun, not to allow the speech police in my home. (That said, I don't play online or use the microphone/speech feature, so this likely wouldn't ever happen to me).
I'm just guessing, but is this a feature of multiplayer meant to keep people from spouting obscenities in quasi-public arenas in order to limit customer exposure to unwanted cursing? That would actually be reasonable, especially if it can be turned off with the agreement of both players in an online game.

It depends on the type of game. Would it happen in real life? Or no? Okay, end debate and grow the fuck up.

SO who thinks this circle-jerk should survive to finally be published if but for the banter??

See, this is why voting for "content" is limited in this 'democratic' arena-This dialogue is destined for oblivion because of some panty-knots and opinions about what peeps THINK they know.

I enjoy the twirl, like any decent troll and perhaps now everyone can see the pile of shit that all this meaningless discourse is worth?

Sarzy's review of "Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft"

Sarzy says...

I probably should have mentioned in the review that the game is currently in beta -- you've got me there (though I mention it in the description on youtube).

But it's not exactly like I stumbled into some early friends and family beta and posted a review. There are thousands of people playing the game right now. There's no NDA. And Blizzard is charging real, no-foolin' cash for packs of cards and to enter the arena. As far as I'm concerned, if they're going to charge money for it, it's open season for reviews.

Malala Yousafzai nearly leaves Jon Stewart speechless

Ydaani says...

I loved this interview and I respect her with every ounce of respect I have. We need people with hearts like this in this world. However, This only reaffirmes my belief in fighting the Taliban in whatever means it takes to protect yourself. I would want me or my wife of my mother to have a means to protect themselves without relying on faith and idealist philosophies. I hope it works for her but I have to think it would not end well if she employed the tactics she espouses. I love her though. She is wonderful and I wish her the best of luck. In this arena, and this area of the world...I feel it will take a massive upswell of individuals deciding that fighting back in a very physical and literal sense is the only answer.

Inside the World's Most Dangerous Amusement Park

SDGundamX says...

OMG nostalgia! I lived not even 20 minutes from there when I was a kid. I almost got killed in the parking lot there on the 4th of July once when a firework exploded right after launch and sent fiery fragments out into the crowd (one of them smashed the windshield of the car next to me). I also remember totally wanting to go on the Cannonball loop but my parents wouldn't let me (in hindsight probably a good decision on their part).

Motorworld there was awesome--it was across the street from Action Park and I think run by the same people. They had these cage-enclosed go-karts tanks equipped with compressed-air tennis ball cannons and sensors that stopped the tanks temporarily if they got hit by a tennis ball. You could pay to drive the tanks around inside an enclosed arena or you could also shoot at the tanks from the outside of the arena using air-cannon turrets that required quarters to operate. Tons of fun.

Mostly, though, I went to the water park, which according to Wikipedia had the most casualties. I got a fair amount of scrapes from the waterslides and I can totally see how people could get seriously injured on some of them.

On Seniority for Power Point Accrual (Sift Talk Post)

previously on Videosift...I seem to remember doing what I always do when I get a pocket fulla points-I used em up all really fast while I was rollin', usually on other people's videos and a LOT of sift talk posts. It'[s a way of saying , "Hey, I like the cut of your jib!" * quality!

Now, powers?? That's a different beast altogether. Why, as well as flagrantly abusing the powers I had earned through tenure and hard work I also set out, on occasion, to spank insolent children when their bullshit started stackikng-up so high it began to waft. Yes. I don't work well with ALL, just most others.

There came a time when the mob ruled in the favor of a handful of cunts, I trust this won;t be an issue in future, as everyone knows how to engage in civil PRIVATE (hint, hint, douchebags) discourse before pulling out weapons.

The worst part of being banned unilaterally by a single user is not having an arena to adjust grievances mutually and correct simple misunderstandings....You must simply watch as assholes make shit up after you are gone.

I am sure that if anyone lurking smells a personal resemblance to the aforementioned odor, they are now welcome to come forward anytime, and kiss my natural euro-mutt ass!!

I hope that this bit of personal reflection has afforded you with a better understanding of the shaping of Videosiftistory dynamics.

The Canadian cops did the same thing at that G20 meeting and protest on June 26, 2010 in Toronto-They were caught on tape vandalizing buildings and setting a cop car alight-That event was used as a staging arena for crowd control tactics big-time...There's more than a few vids here on the sift covering it.

Zero Punctuation: Guild Wars 2

teebeenz says...

>> ^jmzero:

I liked the original Guild Wars. It had a short, tight, enjoyable narrative that served pretty much as a tutorial - and then you played an interesting multiplayer game that revolved around skill choices and interactions between different characters across team archetypes. The team arena in Guild Wars was somewhere between Magic: The Gathering (you kind of built a deck almost) and Defense of the Ancients, with just a hint of Diablo gear collection and what not. I thought the skill acquisition system was great, and there was a great variety of skills (though the skills often felt underpowered). I only quit playing because it was stagnant, and I was quite looking forward to the sequel (especially when reviews were generally good).
I should have paid more attention to what they changed.
The new one is just a slightly different flavor of WoW, and I assume the glowing reviews are from people who generally like WoW but wanted a different flavor (or no monthly charge). It has nothing to do with the original game. It's the fastest I've ever completely given up on a game I spent $60 on.

GW2 is very very good indeed, and because arenanet is actually paying attention to what people are saying its getting better. Many player suggestions were implemented weeks into release, with more to come.

As for jmzero... I dont think hes even played it. There are many things you can say about GW2, both good and bad, but "slightly different flavor of WoW" isnt one of them. And as for the "its has nothing to do with the original game" comment.... yeah nothing.... except it continues the story from GW1, has characters from GW1, has the same races and many of the professions from GW1, then theres the areas, music, signet based skill system etc... christ it even uses the same engine and instancing backend (tho now with persistent zones).

But... if he doesn't like it, fine.... his opinion.
