XCOM 2 - Gameplay Trailer (E3 2015)

Jinx says...

Invisible Inc didn't always include the rewind mechanic and I don't think it was actually a planned feature. Later iterations probably balanced the game more around it, but I still think it is kinda amazing how well it works given it wasn't in the game until relatively late into development.

I'd actually very much like the game to penalise you for not using rewind. Or rather I'd like the game to be balanced with assumption you will use it. I like that rewind creates a nice middle ground between quick save scumming and iron mode. I think it allows for a more challenging game in other respects and that doesn't feel frustrating when a miss click puts your main girl in open ground surrounded by cyberdisks (especially when the UI was pretty bad when it came to different elevations...). It smooths the transition from too easy to too hard.

That said, there are a number of changes from Enemy Unknown that I'd like to have more priority. Borrowing from Invisible Inc again, the ever raising alarm level in that creates a sense of urgency that I never felt in XCOM, even in the bomb missions and with the meld resource. I never lost a soldier because I forced them to take an incredible risk for the sake of the mission, I really only lost people because an unlucky shot dinked them in head across the map when they were in heavy cover. It looks like they are perhaps addressing urgency with the threat of reinforcements, which is cool. The other frustration I had with XCOM:EU/EW is that it always seemed to punish scouting. You'd effectively "wake up" the aliens by finding them which really disincentivised spreading out to cover more ground. It was simply safer to move as ball and let the enemies run into you (with the possible exception of the terror missions). it looks like they might be addressing that by making you the insurgent force with ambush tactics etc.

So yeah. I'm hyped.

I never played the original old school X COM, but I played all of Enemy Unknown on Ironman, and I have mixed feelings about a rewind system.

First, I think ironman really adds to the experience of X COM. There's a genuine sense of loss when one of your best troops dies.

I wouldn't mind an option for a rewind system, by with one caveat.
Invisible Inc. is clearly designed with the rewind system in mind (and it's a great game). But I'd still like to play X COM without the rewind without the game penalising me for it, i.e. the games get easier with it rather than harder without it.

I'm not sure if I'm explaining that very well.

Michelle Obama on race in America

lantern53 says...

I heard it.

Funny how during the reign of the first black president we are closer to race war than we've ever been since the 1860s.

We also have numerous cops being ambushed and murdered, record unemployment, a Middle East on fire, etc etc etc.

Not even grammar school students are immune from the gov't interference, what with common core and school lunches that no one can tolerate.

What a mess.

Octopus Jumps Out Of Water And Attacks Crab

The One Ring Explained. Lord of the Rings Mythology Part 2

gorillaman says...

Isildur wears it while escaping his ambush by orcs, and does indeed turn invisible before it slips off his finger. Unfortunately the argument is available that he, like the hobbits, has every reason to value stealth in that moment. It's notable that both he and Frodo are made aware (in Frodo's case by Galadriel) that the ring's real strength is beyond them.

Bombadil wears it briefly as well, of course, and doesn't vanish. But he's a pain in the ass. Others might say it's because he's an ainu, duh. Or shut up, he's a deliberate anomaly. I'd claim, not with a tremendous amount of canonical justification it has to be said, that it's because he's all physical; a personification of middle-earth and even the ring can't shove him into the shadow world.

ChaosEngine said:

Regarding the ring and invisibility, do we ever see/read about anyone except Sauron or the hobbits (incl gollum) wearing it?

I could be wrong, but I don't remember any of the humans or elves wearing it. So it's possible it does grant other wearers different abilities.

Anti-Michael Brown Song By Retired Fed. Investigator

newtboy says...

I was only thinking of the actual cops that all turned their backs on the mayor when he came to pay his respects/check on the ambushed officers families. Union members, probably yes, but also actual people being blatant disrespectful dicks over little to nothing. I don't listen to the interviews with/rantings of the union leader any more than I do Trump.

judge dredd-interrogation scene

gorillaman says...

No man, that body armour, those boots...I'd harvest the bones of a thousand murdered infants to build our bed if that's what it took. Do you think that's what she wants?

I had to go rewatch this. It's practically perfect. Not an origin story, no romance subplot, no compromise. Just a day in the life of Judge Dredd. Love it, but my favourite Dredd story was told in rhyme:

They'd been waiting there since nightfall for the Sharks to come along,
They knew they'd have to pass this stretch of street.
So they'd sharpened up their stickers and they'd brought along their bars,
And they were wearing steel-tipped stompers on their feet.

There was Big Frank Zit and Faceache, Crazy Joseph with his spear,
The Dixon Boys were there and Billy Rat.
Ike the Spike had brought his sister with her homemade ghetto blaster,
And the Ghoul had put new rivets in his bat.

Now it wasn't nothin' personal that they had against the Sharks,
Any bunch of dead-end spugs would do.
'Cos there was nothing they liked better than to mash and bash and stomp,
Same as any normal Mega-City juves.

"A-rumbling! A-rumbling! We love to go A-rumbling!
("AAAH!")
We love to lay in ambush in the night!
("AAAA!")
A-rumbling! A-rumbling! The Zits were born for rumbling!
(SMAK!)
There's nothing we like better than a fight!"
(KRAK!)

Then a headlight pierced the darkness - a rider gaunt and grim,
Daystick drawn and ready in his hand.
     The chin belonged to Dredd,
And the voice as well, which said:
"You creeps can do your rumbling in the can!"

"It's just one judge!" cried Cindy Spike and opened with her blaster -
"I'll send him back to Central in a sack!"
(SPOING! "AAAAAAA!")
But Dredd's bike absorbed the blast and laid her on the street,
With tyre marks running right across her back.

Then the judge got down to business and his daystick rose and fell,
Striking out at every head he saw.
For though the Zits launched the attack, the Sharks were fighting back -
And self defence is no defence in law!

As the heap of bodies mounted, Big Zit could see his Waterloo,
Waiting just one station down the line.
Oh, sure, he loved to rumble - but he preferred to be on top...
"Let's scram and live to fight another time!"

("Dredd to Control! We got forty-plus juve rumblers fleeing east through Bernstein. Zits and Sharks, back-up required."
"Wilco, Dredd!"
"Med squads and meat wagons to Moreng Alley. Estimate twenty casualties, more to follow."
"Control to all units area Bernstein. YPs on the run."
VRMMMM!
"Pick 'em up!")

In the space of sixty seconds there was a judge on every street.
From watching bays others scanned the slab -
"We got two Zits runnin' fast though the Tamblin Underpass!"
"Krupke here! I got 'em in the bag!"
(THUNK! THUNK!)

They cut them off at Sondheim and they mopped them up on Wood,
On Pedway 12 they corned Crazy Joseph.
He tried to make a stand - but a spear's not worth a damn,
When it's up against a judge's high explosive.

The Ghoul surrendered quietly, he didn't have much choice -
Ike the Spike tried to scale the sector wall -
("Save your bullet, he'll never make it." "Oh no! AAAAAAAAAAAAH!" SPLATT!)
The Dixon Boys all copped it when they tried to hitch a ride,
On the 2020 Zoom to Bernstein Halt.

Big Zit thought he'd play it clever, the law was everywhere,
The safest thing for him to do was hide -
Dredd tracked him down on infrared - "Don't bother to come out!"
"The best place for trash like you is inside!"

In minutes flat they'd caught them, every Shark and every Zit.
To Dredd it fell to ladle out the years -
"Twenty years apiece for Cindy Spike, Billy Rat and Ghoul."
An extra ten left Big Frank Zit in tears.

For Faceache minus half his face, for the hapless Dixon Boys,
For Ike impaled so cruelly on his spike,
For Crazy Joe with his gaping hole, there'd be one final rumble,
Along the last conveyor belt at Resyk.

A-rumbling! A-rumbling! They loved to go A-rumbling!
But the Zits will go A-rumbling no more!
A-rumbling! A-rumbling! They loved to go A-rumbling!
But they should've known they couldn't buck the law!

Why People Should Be Outraged at Zimmerman's 'Not Guilty'

bobknight33 says...

Vodoo , your still on the wrong side of the facts.

There is a nice interactive timeline and video of events.
http://www.hlntv.com/interactive/2013/06/17/zimmerman-trayvon-map-interactive
Also there are all the 911 calls
Zimmerman's on site police walk through of events of the evening before.
Its not by FOX so it is not biased

The Left made this a race issue not Zimmerman.

Fact is there is not enough evidence to convict. The system worked and the left can't stand it. The left has instigated violence from blacks on white people. The Left should be ashamed. They have done more harm to race relations over this issue.

Yep If I wanted to kill a black man I would be going to the store and spot my target, drive past them and call the cops, then let Martin walk past my car and walk away around the corner out of sight. Then I would follow around the corner and all the while on phone with police. Martin came back from in between bldgs. and walked around the car still on phone with police then back in between bldgs. Still on with with police I got out to locate a proper address for police. And got ambushed by Martin. Yep that's is the normal pattern of a Raciest Killer.

44 days and 6 police interviews with no attorneys. Zimmerman freely assisted the police. If the police had evidence they would have arrested him. Al and Jessie show Up and scream RACE forcing his arrest.

Why did Martin come back and circle Zimmerman's truck? That is not the action of a scared person that is being followed.

What about the 4 minutes that was mention during closing arguments? What was Martin doing? He was 100 yards from home. and he chose to do what? He chose to pick a fight and lost. Martin got shot because of self defense.

VoodooV said:

Another fine example of outdated binary logic. If Zimmerman is innocent, thus Trayvon is guilty.

Bzzzt. wrong. That's not how logic works, please learn what logical fallacies are.

High Voltage Electricity - Up Close & Personal.

Above-ground, high-power transmission of energy with arcane technology, not unlike the switch from DC to AC that angered Edison and caused JP Morgan to ambush Westinghouse and cinch-up power for the indefinite future.
Timber and mining concerns wield massive influence in our retarded governments' around the world-Influential assholes whose empires stand to gain from the perpetuity of such back-ass-ward means of providing energy to paying customers work tirelessly to maintain their monopolies.

Anyone who naively believes that the technology does not exist NOW to eliminate the world's network of above-ground aluminum and steel might want to re-visit their knowledge extant of history, and that of the cunts who feed us shit and keep us in the dark.

George Galloway Storms Out Of Debate With Israeli Student

Kreegath says...

He doesn't recognize the state of Israel, so the point of arguing the state of Israel is completely moot for him, THAT is the reason. He's not anti-semitic in the sense that he hates jews, he just doesn't recognize the state of Israel, no? That is not the same thing. It definately isn't interchangeable with any other nationality, as his problem is specifically with Israel.
This is much like how the Israeli government for the longest time refused to talk to the Palestinian leadership because it didn't recognize Palestine as a sovereign state.
Let him discuss something else, ANYTHING else, with an Israeli person and you can be sure he'd be up for it.

He walked out from that debate because he got ambushed by the event organisers, who knew full well that he would not agree to any debate involving Israel and Israelis debating Israel, but decided to deceive him into participating by misleading him into believing the event was about something it was not. Had they been straightforward about this then he'd declined the invitation and the end result would be the same, he would not have participated. Instead, they orchestrated this whole debacle with the sole intent of gaining some publicity, and perhaps to cast him in bad light while they're at it. There was no other outcome from this, they knew he wouldn't participate and invited him anyway, making sure there would be cameras there to capture everything on film. That is shameful.

George Galloway Storms Out Of Debate With Israeli Student

Kreegath says...

How is he hate mongering? He refuses to argue with a 20 year-old military idealist from a country who's sovereignty he doesn't recognize. Disregarding that debating with a 20 year-old idealist is like arguing with a brick wall because nothing productive can ever come of it for anyone, he was deceived into participating with his policies well known by the organizers, long before he was to be invited. He did nothing wrong by walking out from that ambush. Actually, that's probably the most sensible thing he could've done under the circumstances.

If ANYTHING, this is unrepentant attention whoring on the part of the organizers.

Gun Control in the UK

robbersdog49 says...

What a load of bias rubbish. Very selective quoting. The ban on fox hunting was nothing to do with human rights, but rather animal cruelty. Foxes can still be hunted, with a gun of all things. You're just not allowed to let your dogs maul them to death because that's cruel. So what they're apparently campaigning against is a load of rubbish, hunting with guns is still legal.

Oh, and so is pistol shooting - you just have to keep your gun at a gun club. The only thing that's illegal is keeping your gun at home.

As for Tony Martin, he's a nutjob. Tony Martin had his gun license revoked in 1994 because he shot at someone who was stealing his apples. Ok, so the guy was on his land and stealing fruit, but it's OK to shoot them? No. No it's not.

There are a lot of inconsistencies in his story of the incident. He claimed to have shot from the stairs having been woken by the break in. He didn't, he was shown to have shot from a downstairs doorway. He was lying in wait for them and ambushed them. He shot the kid that broke in in the back as he was trying to escape.

I'm pretty sure in America the feeling is just that the kid had it coming, he shouldn't have been there. I don't buy into that at all.

Homicide with a gun in the UK: 0.07 per 100,000

Homicide with a gun in the US: 2.97 per 100,000

US rate is more than forty times that of the UK. Which country has broken gun laws? The simple facts are that I'm safer in the UK without a gun than I am in the states with a gun.

Figures found here.
