The Antares rocket exploding at liftoff

Ickster says...

I gotta say, I love how emotionless these guys always are. Rocket blows up; not a word is said about it other than "launch teams, be advised: stay at your stations."

Not even a single utterance like "Well, shit."

Seat belt violatiation ends w/ Police Smash Window and Taser

lantern53 says...

The courts have ruled that police officers can order all passengers out of a vehicle during a traffic stop.

You don't know if there is a wanted person indicated on the vehicle registration because this video only shows one side.

I would advise you to get out of the car if ordered and you can avoid all of this unpleasantness.

Why British Homes Don't Have Mix-Type Faucets

SquidCap says...

TL:RD: Flush mix tap for few seconds after not being used for hours. Count to three.

I would say that it is still advisable to flush out the stagnant water from pipes before drinking the water. Not a lot, until you feel the temperature to change. Reason is that while the warm water is now sanitary, it is still warm. Warm stagnant water goes bad pretty quickly, the pipes are NOT clean on the inside. If you have ever seen water mains pipes, you would probably boil your water, brit filter it and most likely perform an exorcision. It's bad, it is really really bad.. The main reason why the water stays drinkable is movement. Moving water is safe, the bacteria that lives on moving water is mostly harmless to us. But 15C to 22C is called "the death zone"; bacteria that thrives on moist conditions, between those temps is the most deadly we can find. E.Coli, Botulinum etc. all explode with those condition. So you take warm water to wash up that last tea, it stays in the pipes and you get a nice shot of bacteria first thing in the morning. Or you keep the tap on for ten seconds, flush out the main colony and then drink a fresh cold water; i'm sure this little trick will add years in to your life (just the fresh glass of water and the feeling we get from that should do the trick..)

But the days of flushing the whole length of pipe several times a day is unnecessary. Only important when it has sit for hours after running hot water thru that particular piece of pipe, maybe just few meters or few seconds. And even then most likely it's 100% safe but the gunk that sits in the pipes is DIRTY.. ffs, we got some wooden main lines still in use in the old town (built around circa 1600).. BTW, the water from those wooden pipes.. excellent, specially in the winter as it is just super cold, totally clear of all bacteria, it's like spring water. But that is mostly because they have been in use for hundreds of year, all the time with moving, cold, clean water running thru them. It's bacterial colonies work with us cleaning it.

Compare that to the other pipe system running thru our homes here: the main heating water that heats our homes, that water is so toxic that every cut you have while working with them, just a drop and you will get infected. It takes minutes and the cut will swell up. And the only really difference is that the heating system is on closed loop, with warm water and it sits for half a year stagnated.. It is still "clean" water, looks clean, doesn't smell. But that stuff is equal to biological warfare..

Why i know this? Well, i'm ex-junkie. Knowing what kind of water you inject to your veins is pretty fucking important if you wanna stay alive.

South Carolina cop shoots man for getting license

Mordhaus says...

I'm white and I've been yelled at for reaching into the back seat to get my wife's purse for her. The cop drew a taser and yelled at me to stop reaching into the back seat. I stopped, nobody got tased, and he advised us that we were driving a car that matched the description of one that had been used in an armed robbery minutes before.

The cop shouldn't have shot him, but I would have expected him to at least be prepared if the guy came back out with a weapon. I would have thought that he should have moved behind the back of the vehicle and been prepared as he yelled, not fire multiple times indiscriminately in a public area.

newtboy said:

I would say it's almost certain he was shot because he was a black man.
A white woman following directions in exactly this way would probably not even be yelled at or questioned about reaching back in the car to get her license because the cop wouldn't have been scared of her (for no reason I can see beyond 'scary black man') in the first place.

Lunatic fake feminist disturbs the relative peace

chicchorea says...

Except, as in given that the female's two advances to screen left and the already close proximity to the protestors with scant room to retreat and the outcome of arrest would indicate she may have ill advisedly added battery of her own to any verbal assault, hence....

As to excusing their, meaning the protestor's behavior, given possible battery...interpret as you will.

ChaosEngine said:

I have no idea what happened between them pushing her to the ground and her being placed in custody, but that in no way excuses their behaviour.

While I'm here @dannym3141, yeah, the description is unfair.

First up, that title is dangerously close to implying she got what she deserved.

Second "entirely peaceful"??? The video actually shows them assaulting someone.

Jim Carrey Has Words of Wisdom for You

Trancecoach says...

Jim's advice to "follow your passion" is, IMHO, a terrible idea and is, perhaps dangerous and destructive career advice. But who could expect Jim to suggest anything else, seeing as how he became highly successful doing what he loves?

How many people do what they love, but never achieve success? Probably far more than those that do, except we never hear from them, because they're never selected to give commencement speeches at universities...

This is particularly pernicious in tournament-style fields where there are only a few big winners in comparison to the many many losers (e.g., media, athletics, startups, etc.).

These students would be better advised to "Do what contributes" (i.e., focus on the beneficial value created for other people and not just to satisfy one's own ego). People who contribute the most are often ultimately the most satisfied with what they do — and eventually find their way into fields with high remuneration (i.e., tend to make the most $).

Sadly, advising people to focus on others rather than oneself is not all that popular, especially given the endemic narcissism that characterizes modern culture (and, to be sure, much of what's behind Jim's own 'performances'). Focusing on what is best for others, rather than oneself, requires us to delay gratification (and short-term happiness) and perhaps even toil for many years to get the payoff of contributing value to the world.

Too often, people follow their passions into fields that are simply too competitive for where their skills are in those things. Instead, one should "do what contributes" — follow the thing that provides the most value to others.

In other words, "Follow your effort," "Don't do what you love, love what you do," and other suggestions to adopt a more complicated if more realistic calculus of doing what you're good at so long as it gives you some amount of satisfaction.

IMO, the best commencement speech of the season is the one delivered by Adm. William McRaven, the head of U.S. special operations, at the University of Texas, who said, "You can't follow anything until you've made your bed."

Bill Murray crashes Bachelor Party and gives Marriage Advice

yellowc says...

Not really a dick move at all. He didn't say this is the only way you can validate a marriage. He basically just said, if you get through a hyper stressful situation with your partner, don't worry about the trivial stuff you'll deal with day to day.

I think a lot of people getting married have already experienced something like this and it's likely one of many reasons they're getting married. So the advise is pretty lightweight, really saying something like that I actually think is pandering to the couple.

Sure there's always a chance you're going to offend some one but you know, in this case, if this scenario seems dreadful to you, it might be worth thinking about your choices a little longer.

I said he's drunk and rambling and it's a dick move to say something like that out loud at a party for someone who's about to get married. Do you disagree with what I actually said?

The REAL Reason You're Circumcised

Asmo says...

A medical procedure to address a medical problem is fine. I wouldn't advise healthy women to have mastectomies on a whim...

However, the majority aren't for medical problems. The following video is an ad about people who do an unnecessary procedure to infants and children out of ignorance. I tried to sift it but the embed is broken or something, so be warned, while only stills, it's NSFW and somewhat graphic.

Let me know how you feel about genital mutilation for no good reason after you watch it...

nanrod said:

That's a very firm categorical statement but in fact there are valid medical reasons why a parent might consider circumcizing their newborn. The following is from MedicineNet.co:

"Boys who are not circumcised as newborns may later have circumcision for the treatment of phimosis, paraphimosis, or balanoposthitis. When done after the newborn period, circumcision is considerably more complicated."

My grandfather, father, and my son were all circumcised in their teens because of balanoposthitis. Why it seems to run in the family I don't know, maybe it's just random, but my father swore that no son of his would go through what he went through. Accordingly myself and three brothers were all cut and for myself I can say that my sex life has not suffered as a result. However, when my son was born we decided there was no good reason for circumcision. As it turned out we were wrong.

As for circumcision for any reason other than valid medical considerations, Ya, you're probably right.

Open Letter to Ellen Degeneres: Don't Promote A Psychic

Sotto_Voce says...

This is supposed to be addressed to someone who isn't already a skeptic. I doubt your 30 second dismissal would be at all effective in that kind of context. Probably Rebecca's pitch wouldn't be effective either, but at least she's presenting evidence and reasons that have a chance of getting through.

Also, if you think Watson's reaction to the whole elevator incident counts as "freaking out", you haven't seen a good freak-out. She mentioned the incident and advised guys not to behave that way (which is pretty good advice, I think). How does that qualify as freaking out? You want to see a good freak-out, check out the ridiculously over-the-top response her one-minute mention of this incident got.

ChaosEngine said:

Jesus, that took 5 minutes to make a point that could have been made in 30 seconds.

"Psychics are con-artists, charlatans and evil scumbags who prey on the grieving using simple illusionist tricks that any 12 year old kid could be taught in a few minutes. Stop giving them air time"

There, done. Now Rebecca can get back to being freaked out when people invite her for a cup of coffee.

Japanese trains are scheduled to within 0.19 seconds

andyboy23 says...

An interesting bit from that Wiki link:
"It is believed that a contributing factor in the accident was the JR West policy of schedule punctuality. As a result of this, Masataka Ide, JR West adviser who played a major role in enforcing the punctuality of the company's trains, announced that he would resign in June 2005 at the company's annual shareholder meeting, with the company's chairman and president resigning in August."

Obamacre Navigators Exposed Coaching Applicants to Lie

aaronfr says...

So, someone went into an 'navigators' office looking for help getting health insurance. Then he confessed that he had been cheating on his taxes. The navigator advised him that the forms he was filling out would be sent to the IRS. They also advised him that unless he was ready to deal with consequences of his initial lie, he should maintain it.

Also, there is a controversy because some old lady thinks a group is part of the DNC. Oh, and a 501(c)3 is working with a PAC. Which is only allowable under certain conditions. Which O'Keefe fails to tell us and fails to show how those rules are being broken here. Instead he chooses to insinuate that a PAC which has a political strategy is somehow nefarious because they are implementing that strategy.

Tracy Morgan on Star Wars

You let hilarious quotes about homosexuals and dead black children bother you?

Who let this man onto the internet?!

I advise you to repeat the fifty rules fifty times out loud. Only then will ceiling cat forgive you, my son.

^all I think about when I see Tracy Morgan anymore. It doesn't help that I didn't think he was funny in the first place.

What happened was that large parts of the tail broke away from the aeroplane, leaving him with greatly reduced control... but he somehow managed to land it with what he had left, despite advising that he was going to bail out at least 5 times.

The tail damage is shown (very) briefly near the end.
