6 phrases with racist origins you may have been unaware

Babymech says...

It's worth noting though that in Europe the word Gypsy, or variants of Zigane / Zigeuner, is a racial slur and used in modern times in actual, horrifying violence against minorities. I mean to the point where it's used by the same people who paint swastikas on walls before they raze tent villages.

http://www.newstatesman.com/human-rights/2014/04/why-europe-failing-protect-its-roma-population-hate-crimes

In the US this is obviously not a thing, and it still doesn't make sense to me to start writing G*p*y (I just see 'guppy' when I read that) but there is a history of racism against the Romani going back centuries, as well as a modern culture of extreme marginalization and exclusion.

I don't want Europeans to go around casually using the N-word and thinking that that's only a disgusting term when it's used in the US, so I guess I wouldn't want Americans going around casually saying Gypsy either, if it can be avoided?

You mean like accidentally calling a person from Central America a Mexican? Yeah, that's because they're racist and assume they're SO much better than a Mexican (or Romani in your friends cases)....edut:at least that's how it looks to me.

I never thought "gypsy" was a slur, any more than Romani is. How would your 'friends' react to being called Romani I wonder?

Slavoj Zizek: PC is a more dangerous form of totalitarianism

vil says...

Slavoj has more experience with oppressive regimes. Effective oppressive regimes let "ordinary people" do most of the oppressing. Much more zealous than any government agency can be. For any "good citizen" it is enough to know what the party line is and that one must not deviate.

Perhaps vaping sections on aeroplanes (I hate people vaping in my vicinity) or semi-secret performances of smoking operas (for people who like those) would make the world less oppressive for some people without sacrificing too much selfrighteous ego. Perhaps the selfrighteous ego is just too strong.

A ban on smoking in pubs has just been passed over here. Again, I am fine with that in the pubs I go to, however there are pubs in small villages out in the country where only smokers ever go and all they do is drink and smoke. Will they have to meet elsewhere, rename the pub to a "smoking club" or just become underground smokers against the establishment?

My favourite Yugoslav joke is BTW Q: What is the national record for the 100 meter sprint in Montenegro?

A: 80 metres.

Did the government step in and force them to do this? Nope, they made the decision themselves.

1-Rename this video plz...it has nothing to do with the content. 2-Birth control, yes. Just implement social birth control and boom, we stop having kids. This means improving lives, etc.
.
BUT. C-It is also about consumption. For example, you wouldn't argue that we need to reduce the tiger population because hundreds of humans are dying to them every year when just one tiger is kept in a village that causes 95% of human to tiger deaths.

What I mean by that is the "advanced" nations certainly need population control, far greater than the zero population growth numbers we have, and we need to go in to the negatives significantly before our resources run out. As far as the populated backwoods nations, they can afford to be populated.

Weatherman nails pronouncing longest place name in UK

modulous says...

Well, I don't know what this is worth but I live within a 100 miles of Llanfair and this pronunciation is about as right as it gets. Saying the full place name is something of a challenge and I was taught it by a teacher of mine who was very Welsh. I got bonus points as a kid cos I could remember the English translation as well. I'm going to bet that the only reason they bothered to put this village on a national weather map was because they knew the weatherman is one of those that have taken the few hours of time it takes to commit it to memory and wanted a Youtube moment.

Once there, it is so weird it rarely leaves.

It sounds like he learned this the way I did: break it into sections. For help I memorised English ish words to guide me through the journey:
Llanfair (lllllLand fire!)
pwllgwyngyll (pullll Gwen Gilllll)
gogerychwyrn (Gagarin twin)
drobwll (doubllllll)
llantysilio (llland silly Oh or silo if you prefer)
gogogoch (Go! Go! Goch!)

Bull vs Idiot

Engels says...

FYI, this bull probably was not going to a bull fight (yet). Its a spanish tradition in many villages to cordon off the town square and let a young-ish bull in there and have the folks 'play' with him. He does not get poked or killed at the end of it.

That said, that jackass was asking for it.

Swat Team Completely Destroys Home Chasing Shoplifter

lantern53 says...

I had a couple opportunities to shoot animals...well...two deer, but thank God there was always someone else willing to do it. I would rather shoot a person who was deserving than an animal.

But why is it that we only get one side of the story here. Was the guy shooting at people? You leave a gunman in a house and every house in that vicinity has to be abandoned until the bad guy gives up, which could take all week.

Gee, even Charlie Manson got to tell his side of the story, but here at videosift, you only get one side.

It's a kangaroo court with newtboy as the Lord High Executioner! lol

Here's the story:

So they got the guy out alive, which did take 20 hours. If the cops had shot the guy, I imagine you folks wouldn't be happy about that either.

The Fallen of World War 2 (WWII)

SDGundamX says...

Uh... WTF? Have you seriously never heard of the Dresden and Hamburg firebombings? In the Hamburg case the U.S. actually set up a fake German village as a test run just to see how many houses they could burn down. The fact that entire mock village was destroyed was seen as a massive success, not a reason to go back and figure out a more humane way to do it.

As far as Japan goes, even today a large part of Japan's economy depends upon small to mid-sized businesses that often double as people's homes. The government didn't "place" them there, these were people's day-jobs. Just like in the U.S., factories that once produced consumer goods were forced to make military materials to support the war effort.

The U.S. used firebombs for two reasons: first, firebombing meant precision bombing wasn't needed so the planes could fly at a high altitude out of shot of anti-aircraft fire and second, they knew damn well they'd be roasting Japanese people alive. Nobody cared. The war had gone on for so long that the U.S. was willing to do anything to end it quickly, particularly when they saw Russian swooping in to consolidate Eastern Europe. After Pearl Harbor, the Philippines, the bitter island fighting in the Pacific, the kamikaze attacks, and the stories of escaped or freed POWs, it's pretty safe to say the American military wasn't looking at the Japanese people as humans anymore, just enemies to be defeated by any means necessary--including nuclear weapons.

Chaucer said:

Yep, putting it on Japanese leadership. If you dont want your civilians targeted, dont put military targets among the houses. You can look at the European side of the war to see that we didnt target civilians, only the military targets. Not saying there wasnt civilian casualties, but we didnt specifically target them.

Yeah, well, when you quote Groucho (after not quoting Groucho) from a not so well read book passage where he's not being funny, and it sounds much more like someone complaining about not understanding my classic Groucho MOVIE quote rather than quipping, it's easier to miss. I'm not ashamed. ;-)

I looked it up, and from the moment I picked up his book until I put it down, I was convulsed with laughter. Some day I intend reading it.

WTF Cops?! - Two Racist Texts and a Lie

heropsycho says...

We do disagree. I would suggest you're confusing racist humor with racial humor.

Racist humor means you are attempting to convey an idea about one race's superiority over another. Racial humor is topical humor that concerns race, which includes mocking racism. There's a difference.

Another example of racial humor that's not racist:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dF1NUposXVQ

He's expressing his opinion that it's BS to tip toe around the "N-word" by using that phrase instead or others that are similar, just say it and be done with it, and that words don't mean what they traditionally mean depending on the context. He never expresses any idea that one race is better than another despite basing a bit around a racial slur.

Another favorite of mine:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWdVwt2deY4

The whole bit centered around Randal, the village idiot, not realizing a term was a racial slur, and suddenly realizes his grandmother was actually pretty racist. There's a litany of racial slurs in that bit, but never once was the bit expressing the idea that one race is superior to another. It even has Randal accusing Dante of being racist because Dante told him not to attempt to reclaim the racial slur against black people because he's white.

It's hilarious, racial, but NOT racist.

One last tip, if I'm frustrated, and I hyperbolically saying I'm going to kill someone, and you correct me, don't be surprised if it changes to literal*.

* That's a joke.

Don't kiss me

def says...

It is quite funny because the guy on the video, the so called 'priest' is one of the most twisted and unchristian leaders of the polish roman-catholic church. He is a businessman who begs old ladies like these, to send him their last money. He is a cynical hunter of 'jews' and 'anti-poles', whose sole purpose seems to be getting more money. He should be removed from the church, because he pushing it even beyond what catholic church normaly does, but he has such a fanatical following, that it is possible that he would start his own church. Number of followers possibly in tens of thousands, mostly poor people from the smaller cities and villages, older people, generaly people who feel forgoten and cheated by the system. He has a radio station, a tv station, a school - all catholic, tons of money etc. etc. The tv logo is his tv.

10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman

Yogi says...

I can't imagine it ever happening in New York to me but it's happened in Seattle. Various people and I think it's because I look grumpy most of the time. Even if it's someone saying hi that I know I usually don't like to be interrupted from my thoughts or my walk.

Let's take this in a small village vs big city aspect. Live in a small town where tons of people know eachother, I'll bet the Hi's and the Return Hi's are more frequent and it's a generally nicer atmosphere. Same with say if this person saw someone that she's seen everyday on her own street in New York. Big giant city, you're more on guard you're looking out for yourself or you have a task you need to complete. The person who is genuinely just being nice, might be from the area and very familiar with that street and everyone on it. This new person walks in and they want to be friendly. Doesn't always seem that way because it's a big city and that person could be from anywhere.

I don't know what people should do differently except that understand when a pretty girl smiles at you or says hi it's usually politeness. There's nothing wrong with starting with being polite, just be polite back and not too forward.

FlowersInHisHair said:

Come on, guys who don't think this is harrassment, how many times do you get asked "Hey, how are you", or "how you doing" or wished "have a good day" as you're just walking along in the city? I'm willing to bet it's none. It certainly never happens to me.
