OK GO - I Won´t Let You Down

Retroboy says...

And it looked like it was taken just at sunset, probably at the end of a VERY long day.

The precision astounds.

By my count there are 2328 "pixels" in use here. The clapper at the beginning stated take 127. That's one hell of a huge production.

Time lapse: Difference between summer and winter in Finland

SquidCap says...

And they wonder why we drink so much coffee.. Try to stay awake without any sunlight.. Yeah, you pretty much have to if you want to stay sane...

It's filmed in southern Finland, you go 500km north and it's way more drastic. But since most of the people live in the south, this shows how it is for majority of people. I live smack dab in the middle, it's not far from this. We get sunsets around 15:00 in the winter and no street lights in the summer. Around mid summer, there's enough light so you can read a book 24/7 outside. At this time of year, sunset is around 21:30 and only getting later day by day. Two months from now, it doesn't set at all..

I was just thinking that, it doesn't get that dark here in the summer and sunset at 16:00 in the winter is way too late, it should be like 14:00.
Then again northern Finland could exist in a alternate dimension in where the poles are flipped.

This must be somewhere in the south.. Where I used to live, it was even more drastic! I do miss the summers in Oulu, when it never got dark during mid-summer time..

Oppressed Majority

artician says...

Every male I was around in gradeschool, junior-high, and highschool acted like this. It shaped a very embarrassing portion of my self that was only erased when I reached college and realized it wasn't how people should be if we want everyone to live the life of freedom that we hope to.

I was going to say how no one I know ever went so far as to rape a person, but even that's not true considering the unchaperoned "party" my friend and I had at his house with two girls, where which I left at sunset for dinner because "my parents would get mad at me", and I later learned that the two girls and he got drunk on his parents liquor after I left, and one of them later pressed charges that he'd raped her that night.

I don't say this lightly, it's something I remembered just now, and is clearly a memory I have fought to push out of my mind. It's not a fear of guilt, I bear that very much, as much as it's the first of many encounters a really naive young man had with how terrible sexuality can be between the established genders in our society. I believe this happened when we were in the 6th grade.

I'm very thankful today that I am as pro-equality as I am, and that I never committed any mistakes nearly so heinous as that. That said, I understand the film is a compilation of all the worst-case-scenarios in a woman's day to day life, and you should view it understanding that, but where I come from, and understanding how there are such extremely concentrated pockets of ignorant society along these lines, know that there are very many people out there who act this way.

I got out; passed the "small-town-test", but knowing the adults I knew when I was growing up, and that nearly none of my schoolmates from that era ever moved from home or had any higher education, I know that those who stayed there continue to act that way 20+ years on, so in the end this video is not inaccurate.

I don't meet dudes who act like any of this. I must hang out in educated circles of civil people. WHo is this made for?

The Problem With Time and Time Zones- Computerphile

xxovercastxx says...

Can't you (or shouldn't you) rely on the OS to handle this stuff? Seems a bad idea to put this functionality in your own program where it then has to be continuously maintained by you.

Ultimately, as the planet continues to get functionally smaller, we all need to shift to UTC and no DST. Everyone who doesn't live in GMT will just have to get used to sunrise at 11:00, lunch at 17:00, and sunset at 00:00 or whatever the local equivalents are.

My team at work has people in EST5EDT, GMT, AEST, and CST. My company also has people in IST, CET, MSK, CST6CDT, MST7MDT, PST8PDT, etc. And, of course, we have customers in every populated time zone on the planet. It's a constant pain in the ass to be doing these conversions.

Why The Full Moon is Better in Winter - MinutePhysics

For those of you who haven't seen the Aurora (borealis, in my case) light, just go fix that immediately, its a sight to behold. Sure you can find videos of it on youtube, but so can you of a beautiful sunrise or sunset. Seeing it in real life... it really is something else entirely. I was once stuck in a tent on top of a mountain in northern Norway (in Troms) and went out for a wee, and then.. then i looked up.. the ENTIRE night sky (like edge to edge vision and horizon(s) ) was moving and dancing in spectacular green, purple and every other color I could imagine, it was a sight to remember, I tell you.

Perceptive Cop Saves Suicidal Man's Life

Just like the movie "The Sunset Limited" Tommy Jones character is pulled from in front of a train by Sam Jackson's character "white" Tommy plays "black" the entire movie is 2 guys white/black, christian/atheist locked in an argument. The atheist wants to suicide is done with life, the christian tries to save him, but the atheist is determined to hop back in front of the train. Even if it takes him 1000 attempts one day Sam Jackson's char won't be there.

great movie

Beautiful Mars Sunset!

Fletch says...

Was gonna say... yeah, sunset not so awesome (other than the fact it's on MARS), but that night sky must be incredible.

Man, look at those stars though. Not a single source of illumination to ruin the star field...

Either way, we live in a wonderous time.
