CGP Grey: How Ad Revenue Works on YouTube

MilkmanDan says...

Really hard not to get a sense of smug superiority since uBlock Origin has kept me from seeing any of this Youtube ad crap for years. And somehow, I don't even feel guilty about it.

While the uninformed masses wallow pitifully in a mire of advertising, I gloriously dance on the surface of their pit of writhing flesh. I, God among insects, transcend their hellish torture of video ads and clickthroughs, reveling in the ability to watch whatever I want as soon as I click the play button! Muahahahaha!

...OK, maybe that strayed slightly beyond "smug superiority" and into "disturbing sociopath" territory. But it still feels good!

Ralph Nader on Trump’s Speech to Congress

poolcleaner says...

Nobody wants to hear these inconvenient truths. Corporations that do business with Walmart give their lowest quality grains and products. It's practically returning to feudalism. Here is your lower class food, peon. Let my massive wealth create another low paying job for you. Oh, college education? Here's a low paying shitty job for you, as well. Unless you like climbing corporate ladders by using other people as stepping stones. This world: brought to by the ruling sociopathic elite. Here's an anonymous reporting system for you to minimize and abuse people who violate your social order. You work faster than everyone else but you talked too much according to anonymous reports, tsk tsk, human resources reeducation after investigating that although you are a superior worker, you talk too much.

Donald and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad ...

Mordhaus says...

It's horrible that the conditions are that way. We are at fault also due to our drug policy being what it is. However, until the law changes, I can't support them coming. Now, once they are here, if they can prove that it is almost certain death for them to return, I think they could qualify for refugee status. It is a hard question to answer. I'm not a sociopath, I do have emotions. I believe the law should be blind, though, and should not be influenced by emotion.

newtboy said:

What about those illegals escaping certain death or indoctrination into drug gangs before they're 10 years old? Because they entered illegally, you would send them back to near certain death (because leaving was snubbing the drug gangs, and they don't like that)? While most migrate for economic reasons, many also do so for survival.

I do think the issue will continue until employers pay the price instead of just the disposable immigrants.

Obamacare in Trump Country

JiggaJonson says...

Don't even try to imagine a world where Trump is coming up with a plan where "everyone is [actually] insured" aka a public-option for health insurance.

You're forgetting that Trump is a sociopathic liar in the purest sense of that psychological diagnosis. He will say n̶e̶a̶r̶l̶y̶ anything to get his way.

newtboy said:

Red states almost always vote against their own interests. They take more tax money than they give and rail against the programs that they themselves take the most advantage of. How they convince themselves that 'the other' is the welfare queen is beyond me.
What's crazy is, if Trump is to be believed (he's not) he's suggesting something like single payer, what else could 'everyone will be insured' mean? It can't possibly mean the subsidies and discounts go away, but the requirement for insurance remains, can it?
No sympathy for these people. They voted against having health care for the needy, then realized they ARE the needy. Karma's a bitch.

Adam Ruins Everything - The McDonald's Coffee Lawsuit

Adam Ruins Everything - The McDonald's Coffee Lawsuit

nanrod says...

Maybe the rest of you were unaware of the facts of this case until you watched some video but I researched this story in the 90's so this video by Adam didn't tell me anything new and Adasm didn't ruin anything for me. I simply disagree with the emotional bias people seem to bring to the case. In my opinion there is one issue. Was McDonald's negligent in serving coffee at 180F. The answer regardless of botched testimony is no. The proof is in the fact that virtually all major vendors of coffee from Starbucks to Dunkin Donuts serve their coffee at that temperature to this day. The difference now is that they are more careful about warnings and labels to let their customers know that, you know, their coffee is hot.

They could have made a case that the cup was too fragile but that wasn't the problem. The woman even made a point of saying that she opened the cup away from herself to avoid spilling but spilled it anyways which to me indicates that she was aware of the risk.

Were the woman's injuries horrible. Yes. Was McDonald's response and testimony incredibly douchy? Yes. Does that in and of itself make them liable. No

And @enoch thanks for the link to the video I watched 3 years ago. You'll notice I didn't upvote that one either. You could have linked me to the documentary "Hot Coffee" that I watched 5 years ago. Here's a new one for you but maybe you've seen it.

Also, I may not be as much of a bleeding heart as you but no, not a sociopath.

Adam Ruins Everything - The McDonald's Coffee Lawsuit

enoch says...

yeah..i held the misconception for years until i actually was shown the full story...

and it was a fucking horror show.just the pics alone of that poor womans groin and the burn damage../cringes
if you did not have a compassionate reaction or an empathetic response.

you are a sociopath.

not to mention mcdonalds response.which was so drenched in inhuman corporate speak, that it just left me cold, and dead inside...or maybe that was just the mcdonalds representative which basically admitted that the company was playing the ratios.they KNEW how hot the coffee was, because they set the standard.

they just viewed the small percentage of customers that DID burn themselves as acceptable losses, and they used a tried and true tactic of ignoring the complaints, which usually led to people giving up.

so the jurors damage was less about the actual burns, but more about mcdonalds knowing how hot the coffee was, because they set the temperature, and the negligence on how they responded.

so while mcdonalds did settle without actual admission of guilt, they lowered the temperature by 20 degrees.

@nanrod you should check out the video here on the sift regarding this lawsuit.i am sure you will change your attitude.

hold on..lemme go find it for ya.

The Video That Never Stops Giving

kceaton1 says...

I was also quite perplexed by this seemingly, "non-addressed", issue the director (and if he's also the writer) decided to bring up. Is he saying, then, that men are just dicks?

I will not touch the woman segment, otherwise, I will also be put into the same segment of people the director now sits within... Being a hack and all (and a single tear, which looked forced and put on just for : the video; did he need a machine for that? Is he a sociopath?)...

Anyway...

On a funny aside, a Muslim tried to murder me in real life. Oh he hit hard as a bull, I can say that much. But fucker had no idea who I was. I was born with murder around me. I grew up waiting to die by a sociopath. Beaten, broken, the cycle never ending. Motherfucker didn't hit near hard enough even though everyone thought I might die.

And about ten "moderate" Muslims stood by while he tried to break my skull open. But after he broke his fists on my face I just stood up like a badass and dropped him on his face. I showed restrain to this would-be murderer, lol. I let him live and didn't even retaliate.

I actually applaud that psychopath, but the others that should have felt empathy that someone was being "killed" in front of their eyes, them I blame. And one had the audacity, the fucking audacity, to partially blame me for not calling the police...haha, silly Muslims, tricks are for kids. Guess my children don't need a father, eh? Guess my wife doesn't need a husband, eh. Because the moderates know what is in the Book.

You're right. I don't remember every conversation I have ever had.

Besides, people can change their mind.

So I go by what they say.

All the various Christian sects go back to the same book. Well, the Mormons have their extra bit, but they read the bible too.

There are plenty of Muslims who interpret their holy book in different ways.

I stand by my downvote as perpetuating harmful stereotypes.

PS Plenty of smiting and capital punishment in the Bible. No different than the Quran.

Ken Burns slams Trump in Stanford Commencement

Golden quote:
"In this week of trial and tragedy, Trump showed us how he would govern — by fear, by intimidation, by lies, by turning American against American, by exhibiting all the empathy of a sociopath. Seal this week. Put it in a time capsule. Teach it. History will remember. But come November, will we?"

By the way, I've stayed out of this extremely boring back and forth. There was nothing to be gained by weighing in. It finally has come to a blessed end, just as this op-ed was published in the New York Times.

So I'll say it again, since this video is my contribution to the Sift and I am claiming final word. I may not be accorded it, but I am claiming it.

It is a stone hard fact that eligible does not equal fit. A brain-damaged accident victim with the right birth certificate, with the right age, is eligible to be president. That person is not fit to be president. This is logic. It just is. You can ignore the crystalline beauty of the fact of this analogy and have a fine time talking around it. Doesn't change the fact that Ken Burns is right, Timothy Egan is right, Mitt Romney, both Bushes, Meg Whitman, and the Republican strategist who is quoted in this op-ed are all right.

Trump is unfit for the Presidency.

George Lucas Interview Gone Wrong...so very sad. Poor George

Pig vs Cookie

newtboy says...

Please allow me to disagree on all points.....

1) Humans are absolutely animals. Some may have the mentality of vegetables or minerals, but they are still animals.

2)Instinct can be difficult to ignore, and dangerous to ignore as well. Instincts developed because they helped our ancestors survive better than those who did not possess them. Those that had less developed instincts, didn't have them at all, or ignored them died off.

3)Not all people have a conscience (or lack an ability to experience empathy...essentially the same thing), sociopaths and psychopaths for instance usually lack one at all, and many of those that DO have one consistently and intentionally ignore it.

4)I don't believe there have been psychological experiments on lions to see if they really experience empathy or have a 'conscience' or not...and I'm not at all sure what one would look like. Simply stating that other animals don't have empathy does not make it so.
For example, people have said for eons that dogs don't have emotions, but that's simply wrong, and nothing more than a self serving excuse to abuse them and ignore their needs. Actual study and brain scans have proven they DO have the same type of reactions in their brains that humans do to emotional stimuli, conclusively proving the claims that they don't have emotions false...lions could be the same, simply unstudied rather than emotionless/lacking empathy.

NOX said:

But humans are not animals. You can act out of your own free will and not merely on instict. That is why you have a conscience (even if you ignore or avoid acknowledging it) and the lions don't.

(In the back of my head the Dude says "Well, that's, like, your opinion, man!")
