"Number 13" Sci-Fi Short Film - DUST Exclusive Premiere

jmd says...

Just..so..bad. Why is it so hard to write a good script? A story board? A director who has seen a movie or two? Lets CinimaSins this bitch;

1. opening shot is two shots at very wrong focal lengths, or that hole is actually very small.

2. One would think pre rendered special effects would not have issues with limited fill rates, but this comet clearly looks like its using a smoke trail from a video game on minimum graphic settings. You can count the number of particles on one hand.

3. For a desert nomad in a sand storm, she has an amazingly clean face, also, hoods that pull forward?

4. nomad is pointing at the clear as day impact landing of meteor as if it NEEDED to be pointed out.

5. a fairly large amount of simulated camera shake despite flames being so thin they don't smoke.

6. A horribly done transition shot where the boy is surrounded by smoke, fire, and lava, all except in the direction the camera is pointing.

7. Large tank army that no one notices until it passes them.

8. Physics, or lack of. the entire scene. Those 2 bypeds look like they were motioned captured by a two year old playing with his toys.

9. The expression on the boys face of surprise makes no sense for a robot of some sort who has crashed to the surface of a planet of which he had full intention of kicking ass in. The scowl afterwards makes it even more awkward.

10. what then proceeds is what can best be described as live gameplay from a random indie game from the steam store that utilizes a mostly black color pallet to hide the fact that nothing is texture mapped, low polygon models, and something that only slightly passes as a physics engine.

Brian Cox explains Entropy

Naah its just really unlikely (and difficult to define), of course you would need an infinitely variable wind source, stochastic sand generator and random humidifier/dryer to get a good result.

Wind on a beach is not nearly random enough.

Brian Cox explains Entropy

Sagemind says...

Well, the wind could NOT EVER blow the wind into the shape of a sand Castle, because both the Humidity and Gravity are working against it. Even if there was rain or moisture that perfectly conditioned the sand to stick to itelf in the perfect consistency, then the wind couldn't quite blow it around in the way it would need to. And of course Gravity would always cause the sand to fall to it's lowest points.

I know I'm being picky here, but this just stood out to me.
Everything else in the video was engaging.

For Pacific Mole Crabs It's Dig or Die | Deep Look

Many of my childhood summers were spent in Santa Cruz, and digging up sand crabs (mole crabs) was a daily routine for me. Just look for the bubbles in the wet sand.

I can't figure out what that jig he uses for the first 30 seconds or so is for. It looks like it is smoothing/sanding, but it is producing some big chunks.

Also not sure why he didn't cover the crack with plexiglass or something on the top, as I'd think it a pain to have that big chunk unavailable. That or epoxy the crack, which leaves it clear and open. It is a nice design feature, but just losing that space would drive me nuts personally. Plus the fear of what did happen happening.

New Rule: Distinction Deniers

ChaosEngine says...

Sure, but why does he then spend the rest of the argument talking about how one isn't as bad as the other?

It just feels like making excuses.

Yeah, we get it. Rape > groping > other dumb shit.

Mike Pence is not as bad as ISIS. There, I said it. Congratulations on passing the lowest bar possible. I still don't want him as president.

Even if Minnie Driver makes a stupid comment, she's not a spokesperson for everyone who supports #metoo.

The fundamental point to me is that senator's quote.
"I think when we start having to talk about the differences between sexual assault and sexual harassment and unwanted groping you are having the wrong conversation.... You need to draw a line in the sand and say none of it is O.K. None of it is acceptable"

So Bill wants to have "an additional conversation". Ok, WHY? What is driving this additional conversation? Why do we need to have it and is it distracting from the more important conversation we should be having?

I'm not worried about the distinction between the varying levels of assault, except as a means for deciding how to deal with the perpetrator.

But that's not the conversation that's happening at the moment. If Aziz Ansari ends up sharing a cell with Harvey Weinstein, I will 100% stand up and say "hang the fuck on, those two are NOT equivalent". But in terms of saying "stop being a dick", yeah, I'm happy to say that to both of them.

I know that you and @newtboy and @Payback understand that groping and harassment (even if they are not as heinous as rape) are things you shouldn't do. That's 'cos you're decent human beings.

But you guys are not the people we need to talk to.

Don't have time for a lengthy comment, but Chaos, he makes a point of overstating that BOTH --- ARE UN-acceptable.

Putting salt water in holes

Payback says...

Ya, I was going to say it's probably the washed down sand they're trying to "spit out". Ya know, since the damn things breath water.

They look like Gooey Ducks.

You get the same thing if you stamp down on the hole as well. The clams try their best to clear out any debris. =)

You OK?

Liquid Sand Hot Tub

My_design says...

But that stuff isn't aerated to the point that you can dunk someone under the sand. This stuff would be easily inhaled. I've seen aerated concrete powder kill a guy before. Coroner said his lungs were so hard you could stand on them.

Silicosis.

If you are a truly neurotic parent, they specifically sell sand for playboxes (guilty) that is silica-free.
