Hura Tahiti 2015 Overall Round - Melanie

Response to Trump's Video Game Montage - #GameOn

ChaosEngine says...

I'm glad they went this route.

There's a certain attitude that says that only cute, indie games about children with big heads lost in a scary world can be art (shamelessly stole that from Zero Punctuation), but big-budget action games are disposable nonsense.

And there certainly ARE plenty of good, clever, indie games and insanely dumb, tone-deaf, "press f to pay respects" AAA games.

But you can have violence be a part of your story and still be a good story. Hell, your story can be about violence and what it does to you. Spec Ops: The Line is a great example of this.

It's disingenuous to say that video games are nothing but sadistic murder simulators, but it would be equally disingenuous to pretend they're all sweetness and light.

The first God of War is as brutal and sadistic as they come and it's a great game. "Hatred" sets out to be the most brutal and sadistic game ever but it's terrible.

newtboy said:

Ok, it just seemed odd in a video responding to Trump's m rated game video. It made sense to me to counter that with a g rated game video with no violence at all. Granted, this is more honest in it's depiction of games in general, but doesn't juxtapose as strongly.

South African Parliament Votes Take White Stolen Farm Land

newtboy says...

Sometimes justice isn't the most profitable or beneficial route to take, but recovering your stolen land is still better than leaving it with the thieves that stole it, even if they use it better.

Mordhaus said:

True, but retaliation won't fix the issues they have. It definitely is something Mandela would have said is extremely counter-productive.

PACIFIC RIM UPRISING - Exclusive IMAX Trailer

Mordhaus says...

Really don't know why they chose to go this route with the IP. Except for the the fact that it was bought out and they shunted Del Toro to being only the Producer, while putting into place an entirely new script and director.

I will probably wait for this one to hit the discount theatre or Redbox.

Curb your misunderstanding

CrushBug says...

OMG, this reminds me of the time I accidentally picked up a prostitute.

3 jobs ago, one of my co-workers took the bus along the route I drove each morning. After talking about it, we agreed that I would stop in this parking lot near where she would transfer bus routes and I could give her a ride to work. I would wait a few minutes and if she was there I would give her a ride, otherwise I would just head to work. I ended up giving her a ride about 2 or 3 mornings each week, so that worked out.

One morning, I was stopped in the parking lot and the door opened and this strange woman sat down. I looked at her and she asked me some weird question (don't remember) and I just said that I didn't think I was her ride and that I was waiting for someone else. She apologized and got out. I remember thinking that she was wearing some odd clothing for the fall and how cold it was this morning, but whatever. I dress like an idiot most times, so I am not going to judge someone's high-heels, shorts, ridiculously short jacket, and overly large earrings. My co-worker didn't show that morning, so I drove to work.

It was about 10 minutes later, during the drive, that I realized that I had almost picked up a prostitute that morning.

"Alternative Math" - The confusing times we live in

newtboy says...

I didn't like doing proofs either. That doesn't make them less math.
That's proofs....not idiocy. Training your brain to see different routes to the correct answer makes more difficult math far easier.
People learn (or don't) at different rates. I took AP B/C Calculus while some friends were in remedial math. My cousin graduated (waldorf) and can't add double digit numbers. Now, if you can't place out of remedial math, that's a problem, but the fact that they don't just give up on 11th graders that still don't know the basics is a good thing.

Har har har.

I went through every calculus class my uni offered, so not so much.

Mayhaps I didn't explain the example given in enough length. The simple operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division all have a single correct answer. Insisting that students find multiple methods of performing those operations and demonstrate multiple different learning methods for them is mental masturbation. You could spend that same time actually moving on to the more advanced stuff that is supposed to 'in theory' prepare them for.

Another example was solving a double digit multiplication problem like 37*86. The marking example showed a student using the old school vertical method and showing their work to arrive at the correct answer. The provincial grading system declared that as WRONG. The student was 'falling back' on the algorithm and should have demonstrated the use of multiple methods of solving the problem. That is idiocy.

Basic add/subtract/multiply/division isn't MATH it's arithmetic and it's a basic operation with a single answer and so long as you use a correct method to arrive at the correct answer you are good to go. Teach students that foundation and then move on to teaching them actual MATH. Read through our provincial curriculum, they are STILL teaching add/subtract/multiply/division at the Grade 11 level in the curriculum on the premise that students are still 'mastering' something that should've been a given by junior high.

Spinout Close Call At Kaitoke Intersection

robbersdog49 says...

I would take that route out every time.

Turning to the right would require not only a larger change in direction from me, but also the risk of hitting oncoming traffic rather than a very slow moving/stationary vehicle or running off onto grass.

As for the over correction, that's someone driving in a very stressful situation and doing their best. Just about every car you can buy in the UK now has stability control that would have prevented that spin, and the amount of training it would take for someone to be able to reliably control a car without that stability control through a stressful and unexpected situation like that would be overly prohibitive.

The larger swerve required to go to the right of the car cutting in across the lane would have made the car a lot more unstable and a lot more likely to turn over.

Bad call to go to the right. She made the right choice, and less dangerous one and everyone walked away.

Buddy turns INTO the path of the oncoming car, then over-corrects into a spin-out. Terrific work.

Boat Crossing Stops Ladies Tour of Norway With 5km To Go

newtboy says...

The route planners should be bared for life from planning race routes.
Epic fail...and what gives with not giving the lead group a lead? Even if t h e organizers can't get their shit together, the racers should have just waited...what if they had been that far ahead....and now there's precedent to just say "screw it, it's now a 5k race....go!"
I would be ever so pissed.

Liberal Redneck - Virginia is for Lovers, not Nazis

newtboy says...

I've seen enough footage, and come to my own conclusion based on the totality. I really don't need any prompting to come to the conclusion that Nazi/fascist=shitshow/violent mental defective.
Unorganized and unaffiliated doesn't mean impromptu or peaceful....or unarmed. Edit: The counter protesters were not all peaceful, but it seemed none of the Nazis were peaceful, and the Nazis weren't locals, they were an armed gang roaming the streets attacking people repeatedly.

After all the violent marches they had before their permitted rally, the permit was again rescinded (according to the police). There was a route cleared to the event by police before hand, but the Nazis ignored instructions and insisted on taking multiple unsecured paths to the event through the counter protesters, and the event was canceled by police 30 min before it started because they were again starting riots and fights and ignoring legal commands.
Could/should police have done more? Maybe, but city hall should have the right to deny permits to designated hate groups...like any that advocate genocide of another race/culture.
Nope...these assholes don't represent "whites", this was absolutely not a "white=shitshow" narrative, most of the counter protesters were white, far more white counter protesters than white Nazis. It's about how 99% of the planet thinks "Nazi=shitshow". Clearly you are in the 1%. Congrabulations!

Easy to see them as Trump loving Nazis, but make no mistake, they labeled themselves Trump loving Nazis, not me or media. When they wear swastikas, shout hiel Hitler, hiel Trump "Jew will not replace me" and a dozen other Nazi slogans, illegally march through campuses with torches and clubs threatening passersby, etc. it's pretty hard for a rational person to think differently. Are you denying all of those things happened, because I've seen plenty of footage of it, hours, without the slightest effort.

Asmo said:

You obviously haven't been watching too much of the footage then, and you've bought the narrative hook, line and sinker.

The "anti protestors" showed up with bottles of quick dry cement, balloons filled with urine and feces, fireworks, glass bottles, mace, hairspray cans used as impromptu flamethrowers etc. Plenty of signs advocating the scalping/punching of nazi's of course. But yeah, totally impromptu and they were totally peaceful... 8 |

After the ACLU stepped in to get the permit reinstated for the right wing rally, the police the next day were ordered to stand down, leaving the rally attendees with zero protection and access to the event required passing through the anti-protester crows, which precipitated rapidly in to violence. Funny that, right? Almost like the powers that be set the whole thing up to guarantee it turned in to a riot... And then there's the grandstanding afterwards by the (D) mayor about those horrible racists... /grin

This has been documented by many left, right and center sources for anyone who bothers to look for it. It's less to do with Trump and more to do with the constant narrative that white = shit and how people are getting pissed off about it.

Far, far too easy just to label them all Trump loving nazi's than invest even the slightest bit of effort in to trying to work out what's truly going on, eh? \= |

China Skyladder Competition

2 thoughts.

The human knee, he won't have one worth shit in about 15 years.

And, is this an official race or just some guy doing it for shits and giggles? The number of random fucking mouth breathers who see him coming and just kinda stay put... What's the point of having a course if no one can run it due to the random sheep on the route??

The Story of Western Philosophy

Real talk:
For God knows what reason, some of you occasionally drop me a line asking about what to study at uni: whether to follow your passions or take the safe route.

While I’m far from an authority on anything whatsoever, I would say the following: You will never be this young again. It seems silly not to follow what you truly love. (There are limits to this advice. Celebrity Studies and Twitterology are not recommended.)

The arts and the humanities aren’t the most practical of routes. Law and medicine are probably safer, that’s true. Yeah, well so is never leaving your fucking house. If it’s in your blood, it’s in your blood. We don’t get to play the life game for too long. Don’t be a silly panda and waste it. Go after what you generally love, and I wish you the very best of luck.

Gerrymandering: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

First 5 minutes of Ghost in the Shell Movie.

RedSky says...

The trailer featured Kuze, who was the main antagonist in the 2nd GiG.

This scene is a call back to the original movie but it doesn't mean the story is related.

I'm glad they didn't go the CGI route, just seems kind of off to me.

jmd said:

The suit looks awesome, nothing fat and bulky about it what soever. At first I thought it was a digital body in the trailers but then adam savage did a whole video on it.

It does not look like it is going to take on either sac or 2nd gig. The storyline that the major was forced to have this done to her is definitely origin story and forked timeline stuff, in fact it appears that she is near one of a kind with her full synthetic body in this version of the world. At the same time section 9 is formed already.

Every vehicle in the President's motorcade, explained

ulysses1904 says...

Interesting video. Reminds me of something I saw when I lived in Nashville in 2014. I left work at 5 and found that my usual route to I-40 was gridlocked. I figured I would flank whatever was causing it by turning around and taking the perimeter road around Nashville airport. A million other people had that same idea so we are inching along that road and then I noticed that Interstate 40 next to me was completely deserted, not a single car in either direction. I'm thinking some chemical or nuclear spill closed the interstate, that's all I could think of.

Then out of nowhere this massive motorcade like you see in the video comes flying down the interstate, sirens and blue lights flashing off of every vehicle. It was so surreal to see that appear on this dark empty interstate. Then the light bulb went off, I had no idea President Obama was in town, much less giving a speech at a high school 3 miles from my office.

Why I Left the Left

newtboy says...

SJWs are not progressive or the left, no matter how loudly they claim to be.

Odd that he tells us what is not progressive, then forgets that definition to say that progressives now work towards the opposite of his definition and that "progressive" now means oppressive.

Allowing and supporting a small vocal and zealous group co-opting a political party and changing it's platform 180 degrees by giving credence to their false narratives and claims to be 'progressive' is disgusting and disingenuous, and he knows it.
Just stop calling the SJW idiots progressives or the left, since they are neither, and the problem for progressives and the left are solved. SJWs WANT to represent the left, and the right WANTS them to represent the left (because they're easy to argue against), but they simply don't. Pieces like this only serve to support the SJW snowflakes and the false right wing narrative that the left is fascist.

He does also bring up many straw men, like Catholics being forced to pay for abortion causing birth control, they aren't and they never were, they only had to allow their employees the freedom to buy it with federal money if they so chose, but they don't want people to have the choice and apparently think that if they pay you, they have the right to control how you spend that money, what you may believe, and how you choose to live your life.

Sad that he's gone the route of supplying straw men, conflation, misdirection, misidentification, and misinformation in order to rail against something he's helping cause with those actions. It's like calling the tea baggers conservative right wingers, they weren't/aren't either, but they successfully co-opted the right by claiming they were both and the right going along because they needed the idiot vote....lets not let that happen on the left, please.

SJWs aren't on the left, and aren't progressive, they are fascists and cry babies trying to grab control of the left and progressive movements for their own means, not to further the left's agenda. Fight them, don't capitulate and slink off, handing them a political party like the right did with tea baggers.
STAND UP TO THEM.
