#CreateCourage - Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

I understand being cynical when two giant corporations (Disney/Globe Telecom) use this feel good (real world issue for some) to sell you a product. I find the idea that they give two shits laughable. I do however like the *commercial.

That's how you make an action film. *quality real world effects.

Bernie Sanders: Trump's Tweets Are "Delusional & Insane"

TheFreak says...

That would have been much more convincing if you expressed a single, unique thought.

lol "UnPC", "Bernie sold out", "lying media"? Every sentence you wrote is an overused talking point that you're parroting back as your own thoughts. You are literally, the very definition of a tool. Add to that a willful ignorance of how the real world works...you're the biggest problem in our political system.

Of course no one can educate you or make you understand anything beyond your version of "reality", so we'll have to work to strengthen the resolve of people who aren't so weak minded that they fall for obvious demagoguery.

Mhm, would have been awesome with a person like Clinton as president who bullied Bernie out of the race and then Bernie kissed her ass, as if nothing happened, pretty much selling his soul to the devil. Much better than Trump. Mhm. For sure.

Not to mention Trump isnt even president yet.

What really makes me angry, is seeing such MASSIVE and unbelievably disgusting hypocrisy from the "good guys". In the last few months you guys completely changed my opinion about humanity and the world that we are living in. Congratulations.

Yeah, I know how allergic you guys react to un-PC stuff and people who try to make reality clear to you. So, you can save your replies.

But I agree. Grow the fuck up and fix your system, dont allow corrupt... individuals and whole god damn parties to speak for you, dont vote for them, dont support them in any way, speak up against lying media campaigns, even if they are against someone you dont like or for someone you support, and then maybe we can talk about real freedom of speech, democracy and human rights. Until then NOBODY, N O B O D Y with at least half a brain will take you seriously and will only see you as what you really are.

I found a longer version of the video which elaborates further. It's not really about engineering something useful with actual materials as it is a mathematical wizard theory. Who knows what applications it could have, plenty of things that seemed next to useless suddenly find real world applications years later: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKqt6e7EcCs

Grappler Police Bumper - No more PIT maneuver

hazmat22 says...

Officers can and have been hit or killed while deploying spike belts and I'm not sure if they still try to shoot out tires these days.

The PIT maneuver can work quite well but different factors like speed, traffic and apparently trailers even can affect it.

I remember seeing this video years ago, this guy almost managed to defeat it on driving skills alone!

But who knows if this will perform well in real world situations, we might never see this on a real vehicle but I thought the idea was nifty!

All this James Bond gadgetry works perfectly in controlled test environments. Just like that mobile device that the chase vehicle dispatches to drive under the suspect's car with an antenna to short out the car's electronics and bring it to a stop. I'll believe it when I see any of this used effectively in the chaos of a real world pursuit.

Bill Maher - New Rule: Bible Trumpers

shinyblurry says...

Hey JustSaying,

Appreciate you saying that, I like you too and I haven't taken offense to anything you've said. I understand where people are coming from who don't believe, because I used to be a nonbeliever. The only reason I say anything on here about God is because it's my hope that someone could make that connection to Him and have the abundant life that Jesus promised, and that He would get the glory for it. What do you mean about being a disappointed idealist, by the way?

I'm not voting for Trump, I see through the Christian act..I don't have much faith in the promises he has made. I live in the real world, but there is more going on than what we can see. I base my decisions on my convictions about that, not really the political or social or economic situations. I care about these things but there is a deeper reality going on that is beyond my individual desires.

JustSaying said:

Look man, I always liked you. I usually disagree with you and I think you're kinda crazy. However, I admire your faith, your conviction. I'm a cynic because I'm a disappointed idealist, so you are a bit of my mirror image. But...
Dude, you still live on Planet Earth. You still partake in what I call 'the real world'. We both know The Donald doesn't even give a shit about god and we both should know he's not gonna improve this mortal coil.

I think many Christians are holding their nose and voting for Trump because he is against abortion and will appoint conservative supreme court justices. There has been a strange kind of quasi-reality at the intersection of politics and faith, where the biblical worldview is kind of thrown out of the window. There are scriptures which warn us about these kinds of situations, and why America is in this position in the first place.

I hate politics, it is nasty and ugly and I don't think Christians should have much to do with it. God is our government and our faith is in Jesus Christ to bring redemption to the nation. As people turn to God we will start to see real and lasting change, and not before then.

Liberal Redneck - An Appeal to Sanity

My_design says...

OK. I intensely dislike Trump. I think he is a horrible choice for President and completely unfit for the position. But I also don't think his college football example holds up for shit. Football Coach is a profession, "Politician" should not be one. I don't want a professional politician. I want a person that has real world experience so they can understand the real world affects their legislation actually has. But having watched the CGP video, it seems unlikely it will ever happen.

First: Do No Harm. Second: Do No Pussy Stuff. | Full Frontal

ChaosEngine says...

FFS, I'm not trying to make an argument. As for watching the video, that wasn't a waste of my time, it was entertaining and informative unlike the article which was desperately trying to excuse an awful situation.

But fine, you want an argument? Let's do this.

"If one doesn't want the very small set of restrictions that go with some (not all) religiously affiliated hospitals, don't go there. One does have a choice."

You have that backwards. If you don't provide all the services required of a hospital, you don't get to call yourself a fucking hospital.

How would you feel if there was a Jehovahs Witness hospital that didn't do blood transfusions? Or a Christian Science hospital that refused to do medical treatment?
Both of those are real world examples where people died.

There's a big bloody difference between "not equipped" and "unwilling". In a local area, there might be several smaller medical facilities, but finding two major care centres across the road from each other is pretty rare.

And it's a bit fucking rich to bring up false equivalencies when you just compared unavailability of potential life-saving medical treatment to someone whinging over not getting a big mac at kfc.

As for the article:

"First, Bee ignores the fact that Catholic teaching on human life and reproduction is a fundamental, longstanding tradition of the Church, passed down from one generation to the next for centuries. "

Irrelevant. Next...

"But Catholic priests, bishops, and cardinals don’t give “reproductive advice”; they articulate the truth about human life and reproductive ethics in accord with Catholic teaching."

Really? They "articulate the truth"... as I said before, this is self-evidently complete and utter fucking bullshit.

"the claim that women will be without care if they are refused service at a Catholic hospital."
Er, even the article acknowledges that Bee understands this point and makes the point that in an emergency situation, you go to the nearest available centre that can treat you.

"This is another straw man. In most cases, when women want a particular reproductive service, they have ample time to locate and attend a non-Catholic hospital. "

Yes, and in most cases, people do. BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT WE'RE FUCKING TALKING ABOUT.

"Even in the few emergency situations — which Bee presents as if they are the vast majority of cases"

No, she really doesn't.

"Though it sometimes might be inconvenient for a woman to travel to a non-Catholic hospital, the inconvenience surely does not outweigh the importance of conscience rights, which demand that Catholic hospitals not be forced to provide procedures that Catholicism deems morally wrong."

Yes, "inconvenient" is exactly the right word for a woman who is probably in the middle of the worst day of her life.
I mean, she might end up "inconveniently" dead, but hey, we wouldn't want to stop catholics telling other people how to live, would we?

"In reality, a direct abortion (in which a doctor intentionally kills a child) is never medically necessary to save a mother’s life. If a woman is having a miscarriage, having her child killed in an abortion will do nothing to improve her health or save her life."

And here we come to strawman of all strawmen. The problem is NOT that a woman needs a "direct abortion", it's that she may a surgical procedure that kills the child inadvertently. And this isn't theoretical, women have died from this.

The fundamental point is that religion has no place in medicine. If a patient wishes to refuse certain treatments because of their beliefs, well, they're an idiot, but it's their choice to be an idiot.

But a hospital doesn't get to refuse treatment based on some bronze-age belief. If the treatment is legal in its jurisdiction and they have the capability to provide it, they must provide it. Businesses should not be allowed to refuse service on religious grounds ("I am religiously opposed to treating gay people or blacks!!")

As you said yourself "If you don't like it, go work somewhere else".

harlequinn said:

Once again, not an argument. At least you admit you don't have one to give.

I don't buy the "it's a waste of my time" bullshit. You "wasted" your time watching the video, reading the article, replying to the link, replying to my comment, etc. Suddenly when you're called out on your lack of argument you don't have the time. Bwahahahaaha.

Somehow I get the feeling you don't work in the field (medicine) like me, and if you are able to form a coherent argument about it, it will be from a layperson's perspective.

Creationism and homeopathy are false equivalences. Not even a good try.

Go read my reply to JustSaying above. This is how hospitals work.

"The Political News Media Lost Its Mind"

RFlagg says...

Just remember... while there is a Congress that *might* temper some of his proposals... there's no Congress between him and the button (and the fact that he has said he would not rule out a first strike nuclear attack against somebody in the Middle East and Europe... and he also might not protect our European allies if attacked if they haven't paid). There's no Congress between him and him launching an initial retaliatory strike for making jestures... No matter how bad Hillary is, she isn't ready to destroy the world and start a nuclear holicast the way Trump is more than willing to do. Also, the lone wolf attacks we've seen the last year or so will only greatly increase under Trump as he and his ideals, implemented or not, incite futher self radicalization, by people who won't need contacts, they'll just be upset that the US is targeting Islam as a whole specifically, not just the jehadist... and remember, it looks like he'll win as he is winning in states like Florida and Ohio... When those nuclear missles rain into the United States, remember, those voiting for him, you specifically knew that would happen and you chose to destroy the world by voting for an egomaniac that has no clue how to be diplomatic, who has no clue how the real world works... who thinks the world opperates just like a boardroom... or one of his appartments where he kept black people out...

The Perfectionist Trap

oblio70 says...

Here's an example of a project we'd have 2-weeks to finish:

A Space for 2 people to live out their life-cycle together.
Site: Desert (Southwest US)
Requirements:
- mass-based passive heating/cooling w/ profound southern views
- brise-soleil with morning privacy
- compost privy as hearth of house

about 3 years of projects like this, fast-fast-fast, with our Senior Thesis being a year-long self-initiated/directed exercise. Fluidity and broad gestures were rewarded...but not as we were discover in the "real world".
