Shannon Sharpe on Trump, NFL and Protest

Stormsinger says...

I truly don't believe this has anything to do with patriotism. That's just the cover for raw racism. Saying they're disrespecting the flag and vets is more acceptable (even to racists) than coming right out and calling them "uppity". Not even Trump has managed normalize racism quite that far...yet.

My hat is well and truly off to Shannon Sharpe.

Never heard of the guy before watching this, but who knew sports pundits could be so eloquent and thoughtful?

OTOH, I find America's hyper-patriotism deeply weird.

Don't get me wrong, I love both my country of birth and my adopted home, but that's because of the people that live there and the places I've been to. The idea that someone who has a problem with some serious issues in a country is not a patriot is just alien to me.

Bernie Sanders shows support for aims of Jeremy Corbyn

Jinx says...

Pretty shocked by the result. When the exit polls suggested the Tories were going to fall short of a majority I switched off the TV, put it down to shy Conversatives and went to bed.

Must suck to be a Tory tbh. Most of them didn't want Brexit, they promised a referendum to court the euroskeptic vote... and then they were handed the mandate to kindly fuck themselves raw. Teresa, the last time that happened the Prime Minister stepped aside. Just a thought.

Also can't decide if disappointed or sort of pleasantly surprised that it seems none of the papers went with "Mayday".

How To Cook A Cheap Steak Vs. An Expensive Steak

newtboy says...

Don't forget limes. They make a good marinade too, and they tenderize well. They're acidic enough to slightly preserve raw meat...and yummy.

Mordhaus said:

Another thing you can do to cheap steak is to use coarse sea/kosher salt and coat it really well, then let it sit an hour per inch of thickness. After that, rinse it off and pat it dry. You can also use kiwi, pineapple, or papaya to tenderize it instead, it is quicker but some people don't want the flavor marinading the steak.

What We Know about Pot in 2017

Sniper007 says...

"How you read this report is going to be clouded by how you feel about pot in general." Bingo.

No no new science here, though. No new studies. Just re-re-reviewing existing literature.

"We know almost nothing about the medicinal effects of smoked marijuana."

If that's true... then how much do "we" know about the effects of raw cannabis, complete with it's non-psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinolic acid? The large scale, peer reviewed method works far, far to slowly to be of any real use. It is too dependent upon those with enough financial funding to be considered an authority. If "we" finally perform the "right" study on cannabis, will that magically undo nearly 100 years of unjustified criminalization, untold millions of needless deaths, and pain and suffering?

You can, but you need to use O.G. hyper text markup language (HTML) -- a href="" /a -- with proper greater than and less than symbols. For some reason I can't use the pre /pre html tags to show you the proper raw code. I'm sure a simple googley derp search will help you.

Anyway, welcome to the internet, n00b.

Why Do Marvel's Movies Look Kind of Ugly?

kir_mokum says...

colour grading as in DI is "new" and related to digital film but colour timing, which is the analogue method, goes back to the start of film making.

i've done work for several marvel films, their DI is generally pretty subtle. the raw footage def. has blacks (and negative values in the blacks). the new cameras used wont change this unless they want to change it. the colour gamut has been wide the whole time. OCIO colour may have a certain effect but i can't see it having the colour effect wanted here.

@AeroMechanical is exactly right. the new cameras aren't going to change shit. they're still going to grade the movies to be consistent with past movies. and they've fully had the latitude to grade them in a more vibrant manner the whole time.

and as far as rereleasing them as "UHD Blu-Ray box set" (i'm assuming 4K UHD), they can't. they were all done in HD or 2K (at least the ones i've worked on). uprezing is possible (4K outside of a theatre is actually pretty bullshit, you can uprez HD uncompressed to 4K without that much effect) but resolution doesn't change colour grading/DI.

So, he takes great pains to point out the problem isn't the camera they used, but then says the new ones are probably going to be better because they'll be using a different camera?

What Pixar Animators Do In Their Spare Time

artician says...

I appreciate that this was voiced. So many of their shorts are silent, but just the small amount of voicework takes it so much further.

I had a problem with the hands in this one (I know; I'm critical of everything). But this was beautiful. Nice, raw emotion. Kind of heavy.

Even though I understand it was their focus, kinda sick of maternal-exclusion.

Mad Max: Fury Road - Raw

Khufu says...

the color grading is not cgi's fault, you're talking about creative decisions that George Miller made. If the goal was to keep the footage looking raw and documentary-style, they could have done the cgi that way.

transmorpher said:

Most of this footage looks a lot better than the air-brushed, color-corrected and CGI'd end product.

It looks more like Road Warrior when it's this raw. Road Warrior felt like a movie, Fury Road, while great, felt to me like a theater play.

This is like saying a fork is better than a knife. Well sure... but at what?

I bet you couldn't pick out 90% of the cgi shots in films you watch, it's everywhere, not just the explosions (which are usually a mix of practical pyro and cgi, including mad max.)
