'Terminator' arm is world's most advanced prosthetic limb

EMPIRE says...

whenever I see new advances in prosthetic technology I can only say this:

How many documented miracles are there in which a person's limb was instantly and magically regrown by mythological beings?

Gods can't make your lost limbs grow again. Science and technology are certainly doing their part though.

How Could Assange Escape the Ecuadorian Embassy?

EMPIRE says...

They should release dozens of "diplomatic pouches" (actually crates, big enough for a human to fit inside), only 30 seconds or so apart, while at the same time, hundreds of impersonators just walk about in front of the embassy, and surrounding streets, creating a huge confusion for the police. Meanwhile, other impersonators leave the embassy at the same time. Some through the door, others through the windows to pretend they are actually Assange trying to escape.

Previous to all that, Assange would have called a press meeting, to announce his surrender to the british authorities.

In the middle of the confusion, Assange, with black hair, slightly tanned, prosthetic nose and what not, comes out of the embassy pretending to be a reporter, with another person holding a camera pretending to be his camera-man. OR... he was in the first crate all along, and with the confusion he actually manages to escape because the police loses focus. The crate could actually contain a false bottom where he could hide if they actually got around to open it.

Or plan B: Assange, simply strolls out the door at any given minute, as if nothing was wrong, not even trying to be sneaky. He would be like Capt. Speirs in Band of Brothers.

It looks like he's got prosthetics to hold the sticks, so it's hard to tell just how much limb he has. Either way....ridiculous.>> ^vaire2ube:

I never understood how they could get away with adding some tiny prosthetic make-up = new alien race that is conveniently humanoid and speaks english

There's plenty of non-humanoid creatures in Star Trek. The Old Series right up to Quantum Leap Enterprise. It's human nature to care more about those with human features rather than ones that look like crystal spiders (Tholians) or a rock-eating quiche (Horta).

Language is explained by the Universal Translator. Almost no-one is speaking English, it's just all intantly translated by their comm badges.

Double amputee qualified for world track championships

chilaxe says...

On 16 May 2008, the CAS reversed the IAAF's ban, clearing the way for Pistorius to try and qualify for the Olympics. In its decision, it held that there was insufficient evidence that Pistorius's prosthetics provided any metabolic advantage over other runners.

A major component of the Court's decision was that the prosthetics do not provide an overall advantage to Pistorius in comparison to other runners, when their disadvantages are taken into account. It concluded the IAAF decision did not adequately consider all the various advantages and disadvantages over the course of the entire race, such as Pistorius's slower starts. However, the CAS panel stressed their verdict only applied to the specific case at hand, and that the IAAF might in the future be able to prove the existence of such an advantage, with advances in scientific knowledge and tests designed and carried out to the satisfaction of Pistorius and the IAAF.[43]

In response to the announcement, Pistorius said: "My focus throughout this appeal has been to ensure that disabled athletes be given the chance to compete and compete fairly with able-bodied athletes."

Double amputee qualified for world track championships

messenger says...

It's been calculated that using his prosthetic legs he's measurably less efficient than the able-bodied athletes (doesn't feel right suggesting his body isn't able, but you know what I mean), since he doesn't have any of the calf, shin, or foot muscles contributing any force. Conclusively demonstrating this is how his team he won the court battle. I'm glad he had to go through a legal process, in a way, because all this suspicion has come up in court already, and people can point this out and say that it's clearly not cheating. He's just that good, and happens to have prosthetic legs. Rock on.

Double amputee qualified for world track championships

EMPIRE says...

although I can't help but feel like it's slightly cheating since those prosthetic legs are quite good for running, I also can't help but be happy that a person with such a severe disability, can run on a track with athletes without any limitations, and still be able to win.

Oh science... how I love thee...
