Hawaii's Civil Missile Alert System Activated

newtboy says...

So, the comedy of errors grows.
The story had been that this was a mistake by a single technician that required the governor to sign into Facebook to correct, and he didn't know his password. What ridiculous emergency system is ported through Facebook? WTF?!?
Today, the new story is a night supervisor decided to test the day crew, and sent a prepared missile warning test recording to them that included the words "this is not a test", which, naturally, the tech took as a real warning. Once the mistake was realized, they also realized no one had ever considered what to do if a false alert went out, and they had no plan at all, so they asked the governor to make a public announcement on Facebook.
What a terrible system. The designers and supervisors should all be fired for allowing such a system to exist.

Vox: How faster computers gave us Meltdown and Spectre

ChaosEngine says...

Fair enough, but the more passwords my squishy meat bag brain has to remember, the more likely I am to make them easier to guess.

On the other hand, if I only need one password, I can make it ridiculously long (favourite line from a song or poem or movie, for example).

An 8 character password with a mix of lower and upper case, numbers and let’s say 10 symbols (@&$!, etf) has (26+26+10+10)^8 possible combinations: ~ 722 trillion.

A ten character password of just letters has 52^10 possibile combinations: ~144555 trillion

longer is better than complicated

Just for a little context... so far spectre and meltdown are proof of concept only. No-one has actually found any evidence of a real breach. Still pretty scary though.

That said, most people are probably still more at risk of standard human vector attacks than either of these.

So standard security advice applies. Make your passwords long.
"ThisIsMyReallyLongPasswordThatNooneWillGuess" is far better than "p4$$W0rd". Use a password manager so that each site you visit has a different, unique (and long) password.

And patch your devices.

Review Shut Down an Entire Company - KANOA Review

Guy acts like a jerk so customer blocks his internet

MilkmanDan says...

He probably blacklisted the MAC address, which basically means that dude's device will never again be able to connect to that router. (Two assumptions there: 1. The business will never change settings or factory reset the router, very likely considering they didn't even change the default login. 2. The guy doesn't know enough to spoof his MAC address, also likely by sheer probability.)

I don't disagree that it is deserved, but on the other hand, he's inflicting a fairly permanent punishment on the dude on the behalf of the business, without consulting them about it. If he's a regular that was just having a bad day, he might pester them about why his wireless isn't working any more and they won't know the answer. Or he might decide to stop going there.

If that's how the cafe wanted to deal with him, I'd be all in favor. But it should be their decision. So I hope the guy informs them about what he did and offers to A) train an employee to do the same (plus changing the router password) and/or B) undo what he did IF they want him to.

Of course this assumes that the cafe has never changed from the default password. It wouldn't work on my combo modem/router supplied by my cable internet provider. Each unit has its own unique default password based on its serial number.

There Are So Many Bible Verses Quoted In The Constitution

RFlagg says...

The whole conservative Christian Republican movement is directly opposed to the teachings of the Bible, though they claim to be the most Christian of all those here... If I were still a Christian (I used to be a far right, evangelical, speaking in tongues, going to 3 services a week, Republican is God's chosen party, Christian once upon a time, even my earliest posts, under a different name as I couldn't recover the password for that account, praised Fox news, creationism, though not young Earth creationism, and more) I'd be worried that the modern Republican party may indeed be the Anti-Christ system, since deceiving Christians would be priority one for Satan. No need to deceive the world, as they are already going to Hell, who you need to deceive are those already going to Heaven to practice a faith that claims to be Christ like, but isn't, while turning people off real Christianity, which is exactly what Right Wing Christianity does. Everything they stand for goes against he beatitudes, the commandment of love, the commandment to treat others as you'd have them treat you, how the rich (and not just that one specific rich guy) are very unlikely to get into heaven, to help the poor, to heal the sick , not to judge, and all that without exception... They ignore the fact the actual Sin of Sodom wasn't sexual perversion (though it didn't help to be fair), but being a "land of plenty while doing little to help the needy and poor" (and as a side note, while the Bible does indeed mention the sexual immorality, it also mentions how hostile Sodom was to foreigners)... and ignore Isiah 10 ("Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights")

As to the John Adams thing, they dismiss that as Adams being just political, because he made other statements about faith... of course his pro-faith and other Founding Father statements about pro-faith aren't just for political gain... no... statements against it though however.... Just like Mark Zuckerberg's recent pro-faith announcements have nothing to do with how he seemed to be making political moves so soon after... I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact an atheist or even agnostic can't get elected to high offices (not saying he didn't actually find faith, he very well may have, just the timing is odd).

How To Keep Your Privacy

noims says...

Nice, but the password advice is already slightly behind the times. There was a paper doing the rounds recently (http://www.netmux.com/blog/cracking-12-character-above-passwords) where they test the time to crack different password strengths. The 'four random word' one can take up to 4 days, but in their example took just 5 and a half hour.

The only easy way to have a secure password is to use a password generator like lastpass (if you don't want to put too much effort in), or my choice KeepassX.
