adam ruins everything-gerrymandering and rigged elections

1. I believe all gays should be forced to own guns. No gay marriage without the exchange of revolvers!
2. Gerry Mander deserved better than this.
3. Apparently that's the freedom those muslim terrorists hate. First WTC, now Paris. Go figure.

Paris - Doctor Who Anti War speech

I thought those episodes were about Syrian refugees even before Paris.

And no, I won't pray for Paris. Too much prayer and too little thinking is what got us in this mess in the first place.

There are plenty of assholes and pricks. Most you sifters would lump me in with that demographic. But Assholes and pricks are not plotting and killing innocent people around the world.

Also just to keep up up to date the day after the Paris bombing/killings Our President Obama released 5 more Gitmo detainees.

Lewis Black reads a new ex-Mormon's rant

ChaosEngine says...

You're still missing my point.

No one NEEDS (your word) a church to "complete them". I'm not saying there are no positives to belonging to a church (sense of community, charitable works, etc), but those can all be found elsewhere.

This is demonstrably true and has nothing to do with being an atheist.

I really don't care if someone else is religious or not, as long as (as you say) they're a good person. Frequently, that's in spite of or even in direct contradiction to their churches teachings. And quite frankly, as you don't suck at your religion, I really don't care what you believe. Problem is, lots of people really do suck at it, as we were sadly reminded once again this weekend.

One more thing:
>> You don't like religion being all judgey? I recommend you stop doing it yourself, and let people be.

What gave you the idea I don't like judging other people? I judge people ALL THE TIME.

It's how I decide who I want to be friends with, who I want to employ, hell, even which pub I want to go to. If you don't judge, you don't think. I just don't judge people for things I don't have a problem with (gender, sexual orientation, race, etc). On the other hand, I ABSOLUTELY judge people if they are spiteful, petty or have terrible taste in music

No, I have zero problems with the church judging people for immoral acts. I just vastly disagree with them on what constitutes an immoral act (they generally seem to be pretty down on two people loving each other if they don't have the right set of genitals, I'm more opposed to child sexual abuse, for example).

So yeah, I judge.

I'm sitting here judging the hell out of those assholes in Paris for example. And there's "nothing wrong with that. Judging is human."

bareboards2 said:

I think if someone is in a particular church -- or not -- or whatever they are personally drawn to -- IT IS NONE OF MY BUSINESS TO JUDGE THEM.

If they need it, they need it. Whatever happened to them in their childhood, or whenever -- the church -- whatever church -- or non-church -- fits them.

You are an atheist, right? I don't know if you grew up in a church or not. I don't know why it is so terribly important to you to be an atheist.

But it FITS you.

It is the height of judgmental righteous behavior to look at anyone else's choice and say it is wrong.

Am I a Mormon? No. I agree with you. How this church started is the height -- or the depth -- of religious absurdity. How anyone can choose this church as an adult? How can that be.

And yet. My brother -- who has a Master's Degree in Aerospace Engineering from USC, military pilot, history buff, wide stripe of artistic urges and talents -- this guy chose the church in his early 20's. For his own reasons. Because he needed it, coming from our family of origin.

To quote Jerry Maguire -- it completed him. And like love, it is illogical and not for anyone else to judge.

You don't like religion being all judgey? I recommend you stop doing it yourself, and let people be.

Now, the Mormon church getting involved in the laws of the land? I got a big beef with that.

But as for individuals, making individual choices, for individual reasons.... I gotta say I don't see much difference between your judginess and any Catholic priest laying down "God's law" about how people are "supposed to" believe and behave.

You see that, don't you? There is no difference between your judgement and any religious person's judgment?

President Obama addresses terrorist attacks in Paris 11/15

artician says...

I posted this video before most news had spread because I heard about it from a friend in Paris. No details had been confirmed at the time, and I said so in the video description. It's not about being PC, it's about not jumping to conclusions like an idiot.

I had dissuaded the religion channel because I could see this being a lashback from Paris' already ongoing immigrant crises. That itself was wrong of me because even if it were the case that it were related to the Syrian War/islamic extremism, this still probably doesn't belong in the religion channel. It's certainly arguable though.

I think the comment on "points" means you think I posted this as some sort of pro-Obama thing, but that wasn't the intention. Just because it was breaking and it was the only related/topical video I could find that wasn't a jumbled mess.

vil said:

Yes lets be all PC about this and give them the benefit of the doubt and some respect on top of that. Of course this "travesty" (what? wasnt it more like mass murder?) may not have anything to do with the fact that the perpetrators were muslims (the self identifying "allahu akbar" shouting type).

Oh and simply killing people one by one without actually having any demands is not what "taking hostages" means. Thats typically how crazy religious sects operate.

This makes me angry and I sure hope we start protecting our European borders better. Lets keep saving only those refugees that ultimately dont turn to wanting to kill us for religious reasons.

Also, back on topic, I dont see any points to be won in this for Obama. None at all.

To be fair, I'm not yet certain it belongs in the religion channel. I'm sure this will *probably* boil down to that, (because it always does now a days), but it hasn't been mentioned yet and I feel like there's still a chance this could be related to Paris' horrible racism issues which started before this recent round of travesty.

But otherwise I'm in total agreement. Someone should make a religion about love!

Haven't seen this one in circulation yet:

Dear Chancellor Merkel,

The never-ending austerity that Europe is force-feeding the Greek people is simply not working. Now Greece has loudly said no more.

As most of the world knew it would, austerity has crushed the Greek economy, led to mass unemployment, a collapse of the banking system, made the external debt crisis far worse, with the debt problem escalating to an unpayable 175% of GDP. The economy now lies broken with tax receipts nose-diving, output and employment depressed, and businesses starved of capital.

The humanitarian impact has been colossal – 40% of children now live in poverty, infant mortality is sky-rocketing and youth unemployment is close to 50%. Corruption, tax evasion and bad accounting by previous Greek governments helped create the debt problem. But the series of so-called adjustment programs has served only to make a Great Depression the likes of which have been unseen in Europe since 1929-1933. The medicine prescribed by the German Finance Ministry and Brussels has bled the patient, not cured the disease.

Together we urge you to lead Europe to a course correction before it is too late for Greece and for the Eurozone. Right now, the Greek government is being asked to put a gun to its head and pull the trigger. Sadly, the bullet will not only kill off Greece’s future in Europe. The collateral damage will kill the Eurozone as a beacon of hope, prosperity, and democracy, and could lead to far-reaching economic consequences across the world.

In the 1950s Europe was founded on the forgiveness of past debts, notably Germany’s, which generated a massive contribution to post-war economic growth, peace, and democracy. Today we need to restructure and reduce Greek debt, give the economy breathing room to recover, and allow Greece to pay off a reduced burden of debt over a long period of time. Now is the time for a humane rethink of the punitive and failed programme of austerity of recent years and to agree to a major reduction of Greece’s debts in conjunction with much needed reforms in Greece.

We urge you to take this vital action of leadership for Greece and Germany, and also for the world. History will remember you for your actions this week. We expect and count on you to provide the bold and generous steps towards Greece that will serve Europe for generations to come.

Yours sincerely,

Heiner Flassbeck, former State Secretary in the German Federal Ministry of Finance;

Idiot's Guide to Smart People: Money

Drachen_Jager says...

Rich people aren't (for the most part) rich because they're smart.

Most of them are rich because their parents were rich, or they have no conscience (or likely, both). You think Paris and Conrad Hilton are smart? You think Donald Trump is smart?

It's not hard work, it's not intelligence. People mostly get rich by sheer callousness and luck.

There was a study a few years ago, where they tested prison inmates for psycho pathologies associated with criminal behavior. They then tested six and seven-figure earning executives.

The executives had over twice the rate of criminal-associated pathologies.
