one of the many faces of racism in america

Lawdeedaw says...

You again assume...that the company was really disgusted and not preemptively handling the PR nightmare. I mean they probably get government handouts/tax breaks, so they really want this to just go away. And since almost all millionaire/billionaires are lying sacks of shit, gonna have to say they have no/little integrity here.

Gonna have to agree with Voody and Enoch.

It seems you are under the mistaken assumption that they bowed to public pressure by PC warriors and fired him. Read the description, the company itself was disgusted, and has a policy of being intolerant of hate speech by their employees. Do you feel the company has no right to fire him for public statements and actions outside work that run 100% contrary to the company policy?
Where do you draw the line? What if he was advocating for the legalization of sex with prepubescent children? Should they still ignore it if he only does it outside work? If that line is up to the company to decide, what's the issue here?

one of the many faces of racism in america

VoodooV says...

If it were a public figure or an elected official, I wouldn't have a problem at all with them being fired.

I'm not sure if that TED talk example fits exactly. She was a PR manager right? For someone in the PR biz, that was just monumentally stupid thing to say and someone in PR should know better so I find it hard to have sympathy for someone in that case.

But yeah, it's a blurry line to be sure. For me it's a very potent example of why direct democracy isn't always great and why it's a good thing that we elect individuals to make decisions for us to counter the mob with pitchforks mentality that large groups of people tend to have.

Could you imagine if we put EVERYTHING to a popular vote? Sure some things might become more progressive, but then crap like this would happen. Imagine if the decision to use the nuclear bomb was up to direct popular vote. Our planet would be an irradiated wasteland many times over.

SpaceX Lands Stage 1 on Land!

rich_magnet says...

In case nobody caught it, this is not the first time a booster stage returns from space to land on its own power, not the first commercial launch booster landing nor even the first time it happened this year. Blue Origin's New Shepherd recently did just that. This lead to a bit of a war of words on twitter which quickly devolved to a "my rocket is bigger than yours" bragging competition. It's rather humorous therefore to hear this band of professional aerospace PR agents say that this is "history by being the first to fly back and land the first stage of our rocket to land" (@1:20).

Nonetheless an impressive mission and I congratulate their whole team for the accomplishment.

Everything is Terrible -- Just Ask God with Rap

JustSaying says...

Dude, that's clearly a 90's video. However, the best production value won't help you if your content stinks, just ask M. Night Shyamalan. Having white children rap about religion is terrible. If you can't see this cheap and lazy attempt at making Jesus PR for children for what it is, you'll probably need the Lord's help more than the kids do.

visionep said:

Didn't seem that terrible. Pretty good production value and they weren't doing anything horribly cliche or out of sorts for the 80's.

Was there something that I missed in there? I'm always interested in understanding places that my perspective differs with others.

Putin Tells Everyone Exactly Who Created ISIS

vil says...

The foreign policy of both Russia and the US is far more motivated by domestic policy than "imperialism" or "cold war tactics".

Putin just needs to appear to be winning. Winning wars, media arguments, just winning anything. Crossword competitions, ice hockey games, fishing, push-ups, literally anything. With not much to be gained in Ukraine quickly, he can switch to helping Assad to quash rebels and appear to fight the IS. Russian air support and logistics will have small losses and big PR gains. Putin is clever so he will avoid direct confrontation with the IS leading to a long stalemate and much destruction, in Iraq mainly.

Obama needs to do stupid unworkable things like "spread democracy", "help Israel no matter what", "broker peace in the middle east" and "support 'friends' of the US, some of them as bad as Assad" - its nearly impossible for him to have a sane middle east policy. There is nothing Obama can do in the short term in Syria. He probably cant reconsider his position on Assad and there is no reasonable path to topple Assad gracefully. Also no direct path to fight IS - Turkey will fight Kurds before fighting IS, Israel has to be careful.

Is Iran the key then? Iran is definitely not to be trusted http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/iran/11903290/Eight-of-Irans-womens-football-team-are-men.html

The Lexus Hoverboard - It's Real!

MonkeySpank says...

Many superconductor elevation stunts like it have been around Youtube for a while. However; this is being portrayed as a novel idea, which it is not, and a similar hoverboard has 0% chance of being practical considering superconduction is a major ingredient in the recipe. Nevertheless, great PR video!

Texas cop busts a pool party picking on the black teens

dannym3141 jokingly says...

This is the most vague, passive aggressive shite that i've ever had the misfortune to read.

"Too many people" are now being "taught" to disobey cops. How many people is just the right amount of people to be taught to disobey cops? How the hell is someone "taught" to disobey cops? Are there schools opening? Can you specify anything, or shall we just wave our hands and say "well if people are getting killed by cops, obviously people are educated in how to disobey a cop and therefore deserves to die"? Shall we do the hand waving? Yeah? Yeah, it's much easier to vaguely insinuate around something without having to pin yourself down to anything in particular - cos something specific could be disputed.

But golly gee willickers criminy sir, i sure don't mean to paint you as an excuse maker for the murderous uniformed psychopaths just because you make excuses on just about every single sift about it. Unlike you guys who like to paint us as cop-haters just because SOME of our posts on SOME sifts are disparaging towards the police.

And @bobknight33 - are you serious bro? Do you work for the police PR department or something? You should! Do what i say or keep getting slammed to the ground. You can rely on that tactic to create a functioning and safe society... right after the mass uprising and civil war ends. It scares me that people exist in this world who are so short sighted and arrogant..... and callous.. all at the same time.. I feel like you really do believe that "forever slamming into the ground" the dissenters, the people whose crime is DISAGREEING with your law, is an ingenious plan. Surely you can't think that, and you must be trolling at least a little. People might have gone soft these days, but if you make them scared for their safety then they'll react like the wild animals we inherited our survival instincts from. That's just making yourself the enemy of a much, much larger group of people - the people you're meant to be keeping safe from harm. You can't think this.. unless you actually want a fascist occupying force controlling people.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Australia Dogs Countdown

MilkmanDan says...

I disagree, because PR rule #1 for politicians / elected officials is:
Suck up to your constituents and tell them exactly what they want to hear.

I'd wager that most Aussies are quite pleased that he didn't fold like a cheap suit and grant a PR-friendly exception to Depp just because he's "some famous cunt". The Aussies I know don't beat around the bush or mince words, which is something that I personally find very refreshing.

heropsycho said:

I think the only way to disagree with Oliver is that you think Barnaby acted like a professional politician in this case. He completely didn't.

This is pretty much a no-brainer to handle politically. PR rule #1 is don't say in a public interview, "We're gonna kill/euthanize/terminate/murder/wax/put down/exterminate/execute/massacre/slay his dogs."

I'm not a politician, and even I know that. Even when he got his way, go on twitter like a vindictive prick? Really, what is he, a 5 year old?!
