Why People Should Be Outraged at Zimmerman's 'Not Guilty'

Lawdeedaw says...

So you weren't prepared for the world, so what? Don't assume everyone was young and ill prepared as you. That is what's wrong with America, we are still punks at that age. By that age I was preparing for the military so I could afford an education and make something of my life.

I get what you are saying as it pertains to a culture that has molded our youths, and therefore our youths are not fully responsible for their actions.

I've heard people say that he wasn't a kid. He's not old enough to drink in the UK, he's not old enough to have sex in america. Does anyone remember being 17? I hadn't a fucking clue about the world. Sadly he'll never get the chance. And it doesn't matter if Zimmerman was found guilty or innocent. What matters is that there's a) there's a law in Florida allowing you to goad/intimidate/force someone into a fight with you and then shoot them with a concealed deadly weapon when they eventually do what you so badly want them to do, and b) there are people racist enough to try and pretend he wasn't a kid because it suits their agenda.

I hope Treyvon Martin's death is not in vain, i hope that it can be used for good in the same way Stephen Lawrence's was - we're still uncovering the scandal from that to this very day.

Seth MacFarlane's Worst Oscar Jokes

aimpoint says...

CNN.com posts anything on their site to get attention. They've become on par with the annoying facebook friend that posts anything and everything to get attention. Recently their front page article was focused on yahoo's new work policy and why its supposedly good/bad. Pulling up some of their "featured" stories include the following:

16 year old model wearing "blackface"
Dog trained to do house chores
A video about a reporter saying "it sucks here"
3 videos about the latest YT fad "harlem shake" with its own subsection
"Why we love Jennifer Lawrence"
New twist for teen who flipped off judge
Teen beauty queen resigns over porn flap

Some of this stuff is great if your bored or on the sift, but newsworthy it is not.

And for a more direct answer to what you were saying, yeah thats all entertainment news right there, "OMG, Seth Mc.... said so and so, how does the other party react? YOU DONT KNOW!?!?! Well shit, make something up that sounds profound and post it". Its like a social gathering, except the viewers don't actually socialize with the involved parties.

I find it very amusing how much people are getting worked up over this. CNN had a front page article about it this morning

Really? A writer delivering some edgy jokes is what qualifies as news now? In the words of Mr. Shatner. Get a life!

Of course. That's what makes something nationally relevant. It doesn't even have to affect me. It just needs to impact more than some kid in New Mexico or something (I already don't remember). I'm just saying this isn't national news. There isn't some national epidemic of cops brutalizing 10 year olds.

Some stupid kid going missing in Florida isn't national news either but every time it happens it's all over the news. Public servants employed by the government (that is, employed by you and me) abusing their positions in any capacity is relevant news. And excessive force is clearly endemic to American police as the countless examples constantly surfacing in various newspapers and the internet have shown. If it isn't some kid or grandmother being tazed somewhere it's some unarmed citizen being shot and killed for no legitimate reason.

There could be an epidemic of police brutality, and certainly of racial profiling. A human interest piece covering systemic coverups, dirty departments, anything that involved actual digging could be considered actual national news. In fact, many have been run by the "corporate media" on things like stop-and-frisk, terrorist profiling, and even things like corporate prison labor. I, like most lefties, am interested in well researched stories of that sort. This isn't that. It's some regurgitated local sob story. Typically their fact checking is bullshit to boot.

In other words they amplify noise and partisan rhetoric rather than inform. The Economist or the Times they are not. It's usually fine that they do what they do, it's just that you shouldn't confuse it for something that it isn't, like news.

>> ^scheherazade:

That really speaks to the general state of selfish humanity.
If it isn't affecting me, then I don't care.
People not affected by the economic downturn, don't care about the recession.
People not affected by psycho police, don't care about police brutality.
Enough people are affected by the economy for there to be a lot that want to hear about it in the news.
Only some people are sacrificed to the police gods, so only some care to hear about that in the news.
(Although with 1% of our population in jail, and 1 in 30 in jail or on parole, 1 in 9 black males ages 20 to 34 in jail, it's not that small of an amount... and it's particularly sinister when these people are shoved into private jails that charge the public to hold the prisoners, and then charge the prisoners for their stay [as if it's a hotel], and use the prisoners for cheap labor that they sell to companies that don't want to hire people for livable wages, with solitary if you don't work for them. - on top of most people in jail being guilty of "crimes" that involved no one but themselves and have no harm.)
Ultimately, when it's you that's out of a job, the economy matters a lot.
And when it's you getting tazed, beat up, and charged with assault (oh the irony), then police brutality matters a lot.
The sentiment of "don't waste my time with your sob stories, we've got real problems (that affect me)", really goes all ways.
You could just as well read : "Who cares about your economy, when the government is taking my health and putting me away for no more than the entertainment/venting of a public employee".

How drunk do you have to be to try this...

EMPIRE says...

that is a REALLY old video by internet standards, and it's completely fake.

Not only are hay stacks packed very tightly, making something like this at the very least quite painful, but there are other ways to tell.

Look at the time it takes from the moment he "jumps" into the machine to actually emerge at the end. It's too short, considering how slow the stacks are actually dropped.
secondly, at 0:40 seconds in, he's a good 50 meters away, and suddenly just 4 seconds later, he's right next to the person filming.
and lastly, just as the video is about to end, you can hear a voice over about to come in, and introduce the product this was used to advertise.

MS Surface - Dancing Clicking Magnets

shang says...

actually that loud click is part of the selling point.

if you watch the CES demonstration one of the new marketing terms is "listen for the click"

the optional touchpad was manufactured to have a very loud click, which according to research they said supposedly gave this satisfying feel when clicked and the loud click was to let you know it's connected and to "show off" to others when they hear your "click"

the click thing is a bit silly though imo.

here is more talk about the patented "click" sound
http://gizmodo.com/5952078/inside-surface-microsofts-insane-quest-for-gadget-perfection

The extent to which this click was obsessed over during the design process seems like marketing hot air, then insanity, and then after you keep hearing them talk about it, you realize it's just a company truly giving a damn about making something beautiful and nearly perfect.

Surface has an extra, custom-designed hinge devoted solely to create this particular click sound.

Superman?
A boring character with almost no vulnerabilities and no interesting character traits.
Zack Synder?
Technically competent but artistically bankrupt. Don't believe me? See what he comes up with when he doesn't have two of the biggest names in comics writing for him. Derivative, immature and vaguely creepy (and not in a good way).
Will have to do a lot better after the Avengers (solid action, genuinely funny script) and the Dark Knight Rises (visually stunning with real emotive weight).

I loved The Avengers. Bright, colourful, uncomplicated superheroes having fun. The story was very simple but that was needed to allow room for all the characters to breath and interact. As you say a nice script and some good lines.
It's much more my cup of tea than the foreboding, depressing Dark Knight films.

I loved every minute of both The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises.

Also, have to disagree with wtih @ChaosEngine about Zack Synder. He simply can't write, but he can sure as shit direct and has such a fantastic eye for visuals. Not every director should be able to write, as long as they can take good material and make something excellent from it, which he has done, multiple times.
