People who Appreciate a Good User Experience Will Like the iPad (Blog Entry by dag)

Deano says...

Good point. I suppose if Dell had designed this there would have been an actual handle I'd get a Windows tablet (if it was cheap) to use as a media extender. The storage on these things including the ipad is very small. I'd keep some working documents on it but most data would be on my main PC.

Yeah, I was pretty disappointed in the bezel too- have to think there is a method to their madness- and a valid UI reason why it's there. Even if you had a "temporary bezel" and let it go full-screen, it would be too hard not to touch the screen, triggering the controls.
The bezel on this thing is the handle. You need a safe place to grip it- where it's not going to inadvertently display your porn collection while you are carrying down the street. >> ^Deano:
Question.
This thing about the huge bezel or bevel or whatever.
Could you not have the screen extend to the edges but draw a border when you need it? If your fingers are on this virtual border nothing happens. Then the display could change to use the whole screen when playing a movie.
But I'm guessing the screen compromise is er a compromise.
Overall this is too locked down and lacks excitement. It's also expensive for what you get. It's an internet appliance not a multi-tasking personal computer without a keyboard.
Like others have said this would actually be a nice "My First Computer" for the PC illiterate.

Steve Jobs announces the iPad

Razor says...

meh is right. This product is completely underwhelming. Netbook manufacturers have little to worry about. As much as Apple might think that A4 processor is powerful, it is significantly handicapped by the OS and APIs Apple has implemented.

I honestly thought Apple was going to do some interesting take on the Tablet PC concept, and instead they are producing another locked-down gadget that ultimately resembles trash more than a computing experience. The lack of USB connectivity without dongles, a proprietary SIM card design, still no hope of Flash, no camera, a flawed keyboard design... the list is long.

Granted, I would not be surprised if it sold well, knowing how dedicated some Apple users can be.

I'm with spoco2. I'd usually much rather play a single player game or a cooperative multiplayer game with people that I already know than deal with the idiots that make up 10% (if you're exceptionally lucky) to 90% of the people that you end up with in a random online game.
I find it very odd that cooperative modes for storyline campaigns aren't more popular. When I was going to High School, I played competitive Quake over a LAN and Goldeneye on the N64 with friends. Both were pretty fun. Then a bit before I started college, the original Halo came out on the XBox. I shared a trailer house with a friend of mine from high school, and we played cooperative Halo a lot. I think we both found it far more enjoyable to build our teamwork and cooperative skills by gradually playing through the game on harder and harder difficulty levels than it had been to play competitively in Quake or Goldeneye.
I would probably tolerate TF2 or Left4Dead online play better than other experiences I have had, but I still think that I'd by far prefer to get a group of 3-8 actual real-life friends together and play LAN games, or even play with only those people on internet games.

Co op is really popular its just when its going on its not broadcast in the same way as a multilayer game is so its not advertised as openly.

for example most wii games are co-op / party , Left for dead 1,2 are pretty much only playable in coop . army of 2 was designed around coop.

The reason u might not find coop in games where u really would have thought it should have it is probably due to testing and that you have to design aspects of the single player to support the coop play if u want it to work really well. Allso the Cheep bolt on story telling used in most games dose not work very well with coop.

I dont know what multiplayer games u have plaid but i generally don't have problems u dont have to listen to people and nearly all modern multilayer games are pritty locked down to stop greefing.

Its actually the sterile nature of games like TFC2 and LFD2 that put me off them, they lave no real room for player innovation. Battelfaild 1943 on x box 360 is really good its easy to just play and gives you tuns of freedom , u can also easily join in with mates. the depth of strategy and planning you can use in bf 1943 you also are largely in control of the difficulty depending on how aggressive you play the game.

obviously single player and multilayer are like 2 different ganres. Its just emencly frustrating if you go from a multilayer game that requires you to use strategy and planning against "intelligent people" . to fighting against idiot AI. Its allso anoying when u watch a film and then exspect a half decent story from games only to be given a heaving pile of regurgitated shit. (saying that most Hollywood films r shit as well)

Firemen and Police in Sweden attacked by Immigrant Youth

quantumushroom says...

If the Swedes are smart, they'll lock down their borders. Any sane Western country would, as they're being attacked and weakened from within by parasites promoting egalitarianism and political correctness. Until the internal threat is neutralized no Western country is strong enough to assimilate newcomers, which means the dominant culture will die along with its borders and language.

Islamic societies are defective by any Western metric, and they've already made it clear they're not going to change.

Accommodating Muslims in Western countries is not worth the effort.

G20 Pittsburgh Protests - Students Trapped and Attacked

Fjnbk says...

Alright, people. One of my best friends goes to the University of Pittsburgh and he was in the middle of the whole thing. Most of the "protesters" were just students curious about what was going on. He wrote this about it all:

"This note is for my friends who are not in Pittsburgh and have not yet been given a fairly comprehensive version of what has been going on here. If you have been seeing my wall posts, you'll know that something bad happened in Pittsburgh, but if you want my story, here it is...

On Thursday and Friday September 24-25, the G-20 World Leader's Summit occurred in Pittsburgh. The summit involved the leaders of the United States, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Russia, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. The purpose of the summit is to have a forum for the major world leaders about the global economic crisis. Pittsburgh was chosen to be the location for the summit in order to highlight its economic recovery after the city's manufacturing industry collapsed about 40 years ago.

The G-20 is always met with protesters for various causes, including global warming awareness, socialism, peoples' rights in other countries, anti-free-trade, and anti-war, and anarchy. The city of Pittsburgh was required to bring in police forces from all regions of the state of Pennsylvania and other nearby states.

On the evening of the 24th, the summit began with a dinner in the Phipps Conservatory, a plant exhibition hall (really quite a nice place) just under a mile from my dorm in the borough of Oakland. The University cancelled classes after 4:00 PM that day in order to ensure that students did not have to be outside if they did not wish to. During the day of the 24th, several protests had been broken up by riot police. At about 7:00 PM a small protest began at the Schenley Plaza. (from this point on, I will be referring to locations on campus, please refer to the map I posted at:< http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs209.snc1/7620_178174626232_559501232_4081545_8066324_n.jpg>)

I went there to investigate myself at about 8:00 PM. The protest itself was fairly small, only about a hundred or so people total, with only a handful of protesters. There was some live music and dancing, courtesy of the Hare Krishna. Despite the fact that the protest was fairly small and peaceful, there were several hundred police forming a perimeter around the plaza, which is under a quarter-mile from the Conservatory. All of the Police were in riot gear, which covered any form of identification they may have had; they were also all armed with lethal and non-lethal weapons.

Around 9:00, I decided to return to my dorm. At 10:15, I overheard someone saying that they saw fire on Forbes Avenue. I decided to go out and investigate. At this point, the street had been flooded by curious students, and would remain that way until the police removed them. Several dumpsters had been pushed into the intersection of Forbes and Atwood by anarchist protesters. The next intersection had a overturned dumpster with flaming garbage spilled on the street. Several shop windows had been broken by a protester from California, however the media initially implicated that it had been students who were responsible.

I reached the lawn of the Pitt Union, and at about 10:45 the police began to multiply rapidly. They also brought in several scary-looking trucks with large dish-shaped things on them. This turned out to be a Long-Range Acoustic Device (LRAD), which emits a loud, scary noise which is physically disabling within a certain radius. At 11:00 PM, the trucks began playing a pre-recorded message declaring that the people in the streets had become an "illegal gathering" and that the crowd was to disperse, or they could be subject to arrest or attack with "less lethal" weaponry (does that mean you're less dead when you get hit?)

At this, I decided to retreat to Forbes Hall. Other people were not fortunate enough to get out of there as quickly as I did, and became exposed to a hail of "OC" gas, rubber bullets, mace, LRAD blasts, and nightsticks. The University unfortunately decided to lock down the residence halls as the police approached, giving the retreating students nowhere to go to escape from the police. One of my friends was arrested while holding open the doors to the Litchfield Towers residence hall lobby so that escaping students had somewhere to go. She was dragged outside of the doorway, beaten to the ground, not given any rights, held for five hours, and released without any charge as of yet.

At the time, I was unaware of this, but I watched the police advance through the lower campus (residential area, mainly between Forbes and Fifth avenues) via the live feed on the local news. When I noticed that they were three blocks away from Forbes Hall, I went to the patio on the second floor of the hall (out of reach of anyone who didn't live there or have a friend there). At about midnight, the cops were in front of the hall, still chasing a small group of protesters despite being nearly a mile from the original protest ground and being practically at the end of the campus. Without any real warning, they threw several canisters of "OC" gas onto the patio. Unknown to me at the time, several also entered the lobby and threatened to mace several students who were unable to enter the hall due to the lockdown.

OC gas is for all intents and purposes the same as tear gas. When you inhale it, your lungs and throat itch and you can't do anything but cough. If it gets in your eyes, you become partially blind and it feels like your eyes are melting. I was several feet away from a grenade and was directly exposed to it for several seconds as my fellow students and I tried to escape. I ran to my bathroom on the sixth floor and flushed my eyes and choked for five minutes. The third floor had window open out of which the students had been looking, it was filled with gas, and the students living on the third floor became refugees for several hours while it cleared.

Shortly after passing Forbes hall, the police attack ended. They left Oakland with 42 arrests (most were let go that morning), and a large number of unfairly treated, assaulted, and pissed students. The university itself has yet to make any statement regarding Thursday night, but the Mayor of Pittsburgh and Chief of Police have stated that they are "proud of how well the police handled the situation". They are apparently not fans of students either.

I will save my personal commentary and descriptions of the aftermath for another note. However, here are a few links that you will find interesting.
<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNeD4rHUF4A> a compilation of student-made videos from 9/24.
The videos are of varying quality and contain some harsh language and violence. These will give you an idea of what the students here experienced (I know the person being dragged away at 2:35)

Sadat X - Hang'em High

MrFisk says...

A lot of niggaz stepped up to the bad man
Chest bucked out with your head wide open
Hopin, to spot, a chip in this frame
I lived and died by the burnin flame
of the OK Corral, Cowboy style
From the Quarters on down to Colorado's
Big niggaz from uptown, ridin into Tahoe's
Saloon settin, kids is walkin round
drinkin whiskey and scotch, strictly out of shotglasses
Lookin screwfaced at the next nigga who passes
There's women in garter belts and ciggarettes
And on the side there's the price game
Niggaz is playin the price game
Indian Red, was bangin niggaz in the head
With his man Apache Joe, they take your money off the floor
They side-bettin for a better, they makin cheddar
That tribal shit is work ya sound the wompom drums
Cause my Indian man'sll break your great dick, UHH
Walk in the New York terrority
On the back of a tree, there's a picture of me
It says I'm lawless, flawless, a hustler plus gun rustler
Wanted in Carolina, for sellin some of New York's finer
Marshal Cooper say he want me, Marshal Cooper gotta get me
Marshal Cooper say beat me, Marshal Cooper better wet me
I gather alla y'all, all of my trusted men
All of my baddest niggaz, niggaz that's quickest with the triggers
There's distrubin news on the wire
That my dome piece is done sent to piece out for hire
I ain't goin down over no money exchange
You late for say I, who reigns as King of the Range?
In this land of wildness
Yo you better pack your vest
In the streets there's nothin but crime
So you best to watch your behind...
Meanwhile saloon settin is back to full swing
Bar's gettin money people doin they thing
There's strictly Boss Players with this kid named Minnesota
As women start to fill up, turn the notch on the grill up
And add mo' stakes to the house banks for gamblers
Half-pipes to scramblers, and free for Wild Cowboys
You never bring decoys if you wanna make real nouse
The bigger the stick, the bigger the fire
I never hit a man in the back, a coward acts like that
Lay out my black hat cause I feel like the bad man
Who on the rise, the D's to Manhattan
Let's walk the thirty paces on the Now Rule races
Oh it's the Marshal Cooper, and I love how he doin this
Women sayin don't get hurt, and I ain't plannin on it
Ten steps taken as I hit the blam factor
His dick to act up, was death the benefactor
Leave him twitchin in the dirt like Cousin Harold from the Menace
I'm in this to win this on the great wide trail
I'm ten times as bad as John Wayne, could ever be
Plus I'm down with the Indian, and need high to get the shit again
I'm responsible for that body in the alley
I'll Louisiana Purchase that ass with with Remi's spurs
and hard shots of Tequila, where the dancin girls
Let's get right as the story unfurls
Piano man keep playin, keep them keys bangin
Single man get three graves there's gonna be a hangin
Now this right here ain't for the youth to see
A grown man assed out swingin from a tree
In this land of wildness
Yo you better pack your vest
In the streets there's nothin but crime
So you best to watch your behind
Joe Tex was the biggest hombre from the projects
Had all the work locked down, so he thought
But he drank and got loose lipped, let a lot of news slip
Stripped of his game and got his self murdered
Thoughts of him are passin like the buffalo
Got his self rocked in the ninety-six brand new Acura
Niggaz said it was lightning BLAOW blew out the back mirror
Hah, youknowhatI'msayin? Dig, check it out
They say that Cowboys never die they just ride off into the sun
A little tale from Sadat X of how the WORLD was won
Check it out, remember this
Gun-slingers, dead-ringers with presidents
Is found tied with no explanation of how they died
Yo the great Sadat X, the High Plains Drifter
No question
In this land of wildness
Yo you better pack a vest
In the streets there's nothin but crime
So you best to watch your behind

AN IDEA TO MAKE THE SIFT LOADED ! (Commercial Talk Post)

westy says...

yah it would be made clear that its outside of the democratic process. i dont see a problem if its isolated from the rest of the sift siting at the top of the website. the point is is that if u don't like it it would only cos you a small amount to replace it . if you wanted to you could buy credit in balk say its USD5 to get 5 points allowing you to change the video 5 times.

the problem with power points and these other systems is thay are inbeded within the website and really the majority of users just don't care ore don't get it, in some ways my idea is still needlessly complicated, u need something that monatises users that really don't care what the sift is because that's the majority of people that come on the site. evan though there is a good core community i don't know if there would be an affective way to monatise them all , as you would probably need $30 of everyone to make a significant amount of money from them.

how about a video sift tv typ web page where it automatically streams the highest voted content clip buy clip maby there would be some way to paint this with adverts so that it can generate a significant CPM ?

you could lock down the whole site and force everyone to pay 3USD to access it lol.

who cares u cnt live without food and u cnt get food without mony

Ron Paul re: "FEMA Concentration-Camp" Lie with G. Beck

volumptuous says...

Here's Ron Paul's words:

"I don't think all the answers are in"

"I think there's justified concern"

So, he supports the idea that maybe something is there, and he appears on Beck's TV show to talk about this, and this is not him promoting this idea?

And let me know if I'm wrong, but during Katrina, wasn't FEMA the group who was the least effective as opposed to the most Orwellian? And how does appointing the head of the Arabian horse association somehow dictate the principles of FEMA?

If you remember, it was the Air Nat'l Guard who were allegedly confiscating weapons, and locking down city sectors, not FEMA. Then Bush's FEMA led by the exact-opposite person who should have been in charge, horribly failed, and you want to not blame Bush's retarded appointment and completely absent response plan, but some secret dark forces that FEMA operates under? That's why Katrina sucked?

Sorry, but this FEMA concentration-camp conspiracy has been debunked for almost twenty years, and don't you think that an elected official --one who many regard as incredibly intelligent-- should know this, as opposed to me, some ordinary internet loser?

Wait, what?
