Cops arrest journalists in Wisconsin

Bruti79 says...

>> ^mtadd:

This has nothing to do with them being journalists or not. The Governor has the police locking down the Wisconsin capitol building illegally, as a judge has given a court order that the public's access to the capitol to be restored as it was prior to the big protests against the recent anti-union legislation passed recently. These assembled people are exercising their lawful rights, and experiencing the oppression of "law enforcement officers" typical obedience to authority. And when their bosses are corrupt, what can you expect from police but this sort of behavior?

You're right, I went off on a tangent about something that is one of my pet peeves. You're right the Governor shouldn't be shutting down the capitol building illegally, people should have the right to protest, the right to gather, and the press should be there to report it. You can see her stop for a second when someone asks her for her credentials though, she doesn't have them, and she knows it.

I went off on something else. I saw a ton of it in Toronto during the G20. Bloggers or people just there to take pictures trying to claim the rights of freedom of press, when they have no idea how to get press passes or credentials, or claiming their blog is a viable news source. (That's another rant, on news off blogs, and the lack of research done into them. Eg. Pat Burns being reported dead before he actually had passed away.)

This isn't the place for those debates, this should be about the cops handling of the people there. Questions for this video are: What are the charges against her, and why was she arrested. What did the second girl do to get arrested as well? If they were shutting down the building, why is there still a crowd audible in the background?

Michael Jordan - How Quickly They Forget (MJ vs Lebron)

heropsycho says...

I am a Bulls fan, and I'll say James could end up being better than Jordan. Is he better now? No. The comments in this video about how he's a lock down defender because he shutdown Derrick Rose? Look, James is a pretty good defender, but the reason he shut down Rose is because Rose is far shorter than James, and Rose only has speed over James, and that's so miniscule, James could still block most any shot Rose would try to make driving to the rim. Rose simply has not developed offensive moves to be able to score against James because he can't shoot the jumper well enough to take more difficult shots like step backs and fades necessary to shoot over James. That's not Rose's game... yet. Rose simply tried to be more athletic than James when you think about it, and as good as Rose is in that department, James is the best pure athlete the NBA has ever seen.

That doesn't make James a lock down defender. It makes him a freakish athlete. He won't shutdown Dirk. He can't shutdown Kobe. He can't shutdown Durant. Hell, Luol Deng can get some points against James. James is a good defender, but he's not great.

James is an incredible athlete. The fact that he can keep up speed wise with Rose is ridiculous. With that said, James isn't the on ball defender Jordan was. James is also not the clutch scorer Jordan was. Yes, James can rebound better. But when it comes to which one when the game is on the line, who would you want making the offensive and defensive plays to win you the game? Jordan, hands down.

With that said, James has the potential to become a better defender because he's a better athlete than Jordan. James has the athletic ability to guard virtually anyone in the NBA, even a center, and give them fits. Jordan could never guard a center or even big forward. But James at this point cannot be considered a great defender. Jordan was without a doubt.

Jordan to this point is clearly better, but objectively, James has a long career ahead of him to catch up and perhaps pass Jordan.

Morning in cities around the world

Deano says...

That was lovely. Particularly great in full-screen 720p.
I watched all of that and it was nice to see some of the places I've been to. The locale, in Thailand I think it was, with the traders positioned inches away from the train was jaw-dropping. And India - still haven't been there - you can see the potential for culture-shock with guys washing themselves in the street.

So amazingly different from locked-down London. It makes me glad I'm self-employed and rarely have to travel in the mornings anymore.

These things were not the brainchild of Obama, and for you to imply they were is dishonest. If you want to talk about corruption, and Obama getting cozy with scanner CEO's, I'm down with that. My big problem with you is that you are either unwilling or unable to see these same corrupting market forces in your own ideology. Over the last few decades of deregulation and increased market influence over our politics, things have only gotten worse. Markets have proven that they are neither efficient or just, and they have zero to do with liberty.

I hate the smugness of Apple

Seric says...

Heh....David and Goliath effect?

With Apple now being richer than Microsoft, I'm not sure that's as relevant anymore.

I think the thing that bothers me about apple is that flaws aren't recognised amongst their fans.

A friend of mine owns a macbook and an iphone. If he goes on any webpage with flash on it his fans spin right up. He was using a shockwave flash application recently and said his CPU was at 160%. This laptop is maybe 2 or 3 years old. The only learnt recently that unless you void your warranty by jail-breaking it - the iphone doesn't let you change the background, which seems ridiculous when on my much less sophisticated sony ericsson, I have a custom made metal gear solid theme I made myself where I can customise everything from background to tab and font colour.

That moves me on nicely to my other quibble of how locked down apple products are. 'you can view videos in AMAZING quality on your ipad'. Perhaps....but you have to convert it into some proprietary format first. The shuffle needing licensed patented headphone parts for them to actually work with the device. What's that Seric? You'd like to use your new Sennheiser PX200-II's with this product? Too bad.

I mean...yes, Windows is with it's flaws too. But I can do what I want with it. (In before linux users, I have and use cygwin, that's good enough for me ) Well...I say I can do what I want, but last time I checked - I wasn't allowed to write programs for iphone/ipad on a Windows machine T____T.

Well, now that's just a ridiculous statement. How are Macs any more an "application console" than a Windows PC?

In reply to this comment by xxovercastxx:
The debacle that is the App Store is obviously far worse, but even on their desktop systems they still have unparalleled control over the platform. A Mac is more of an application console than a computer.

There are pluses and minuses to that, of course, but that's how I sees it.

Smart-arseery around Apple products? I'm shocked. Shocked I am Sir.

I don't know of any lock-down strategies for Macs. iPhone/ipad definitely. who knows, that could be Apple's downfall.

In reply to this comment by xxovercastxx:
Reddit does actually run on linux servers, I was just being a smartass. I didn't realize Mac had migrated to bash, but I was being a smartass about that, too. I'm well aware that OSX is a glorified BSD. On one hand that's great for stability and such; on the other hand I could just install BSD on any hardware and not be tied down by Apple's lock-in strategies.
>> ^dag:
Well, I don't know what Reddit runs on - but I'd guess standard Linux gear.
And if I want to get to a bash prompt on a Mac, I just open a terminal window and I'm there. Sometimes people forget that Macs have a BSD backend- and that's why it's often a hacker's laptop of choice- Perl, Apache, vi emacs, sed, awk and most of your other standard command line tools are baked right in.
