Romney's Hypocrisy: "The Dignity of Work"

Porksandwich says...

Whole lot of logic disconnects throughout society. It's a modern miracle things just don't shut down because the disconnect is so hard to deal with sometimes.

You need a college education to get a job.

You need experience to get an entry level job, college usually does not count as experience.

Virtually no businesses are willing to train.

We have virtually no training or licensing for most jobs they want experience for, college does not even broach this subject.

Then you take all of the above stuff and you see the vast majority of jobs that pay a liveable wage (which is not minimum wage) end up being hires due to who you know instead of what you know. And it's in direct contrast to what we are often taught, recited to, and whatever else throughout school and college. You need an education to get a job, and you need to make the most of it. But we see people who are dumb as a brick get a job because they know someone ALL THE TIME. In fact this "know someone" probably decides what job you end up doing more than your skillset or education.

Then we have working families with both parents working. It's in stark contrast to the history of our species.

The fact that we went from the ability to have one parent able to provide to it being difficult to make it on two salaries means we've fucked up something. Your grandparents could do it, your parents MIGHT have been able to do it...maybe. But the likelihood of someone today able to support a household on one income is low. And your kids being able to once they are adults is probably close to zero, you'll be lucky if they don't have to live with you so you can all survive financially.

Cenk Loses his Shit on former Republican Senator Bob McEwen

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

He (and you, and the entire working population) has given the man many many trillions of dollars. Now that man is turning around and saying "you will not get your money back.

We aren't going to get it anyway. Like all government programs it started small and grew until today it is the biggest single item in the entire national budget - including Defense. The naked truth is that the government has promised too much to too many - and there isn't enough money to pay for it all. When you calculate how much in social programs the government has 'promised' versus what they are going to take in (IE 'Unfunded Liabilities'), the US is currently over 140 TRILLION DOLLARS in the hole.

SS - like all Federal social programs - should die in a fire - and do it overnight. Frankly, it is offensive that we ever got stuck with such anti-constitutional programs in the first place. Let it be a warning to all of us to NEVER give the government so much as one plugged nickel if it can possibly be helped. Sadly, our Grandparents and Great Grandparents sold us all down the river because they liked FDR instead of running him out of town on a rail like he deserved.

And they're at it again with Obamacare. If Obamacare isn't thrown out (like it should be) by the SCOTUS, then 20 years from now your kids will be cursing every mindless fool who supported it. We Conservatives are warning you right now based on simple history. All government programs start 'small' and then balloon - becoming unsustainable monsters. It is better to never allow these programs to start in the first place. Learn to ignore the leftist/progressive bullcrap saying we "need" the program. It's a lie. We don't need the programs. Quite the opposite. If you want to see the "future" of Obamacare (if it passses) then just look at Social Security today. Don't allow yet another layer of this federal garbage to get vomited on top of the layers that are already burying us.

"Trolling" by the standards of the left is anyone from the non-left disagreeing.
It's easy for anyone to be lulled to sleep as the schools, Vancouverwood, 99% of the media and presently the White House all chant the same socialist claptrap, leaving out the verse about who has to pay for it.
You should be grateful to have your views challenged.

I welcome having my views challenged, but with you it's less of a "challenge" and more of a "confirmation that the American right are a bunch of troglodytes without an original thought among them"

Once again, qm comes in with an argument that somehow manages to be both wrong and completely irrelevant at the same time and derails the thread. One of these days, I will make a timelapse video of such a comment thread and see if Deano will let me post it in skilful, for it is truly epic trolling.
As for the video itself. Isn't it refreshing to see a video with Christians who actually deserve the name? They're one of the few examples I've seen of people actually following Christs teachings. Kudos to them.

@therealblankman - so right you are.
I used to be more strident but over the years I've realized people's opinions change so slowly, if at all. So I pick and choose my battles.

Well, QM's a long-term pet project of mine. I sincerely doubt that he'll be able to make a return to humanity, but perhaps we can prevent other from following down the dark path he's chosen.

That's not predicated by the polygamy. People make the same argument for gay marriage - all the horror and gay disease that follows with gay marriage.

I can agree that polygamy provides an excuse for crazy people to do crazy things, like Porn also does (if we remember that discussion). It attracts the wrong crowd. That said, principally there's nothing wrong with polygamy.

Muslims have a funny sense of honor..
>> ^therealblankman:

@gwiz665
Personally I don't give two shits about whatever consenting adults do- sexually, maritally, orally, anally or whateverly. The problem with polygamy isn't the multiple spouses per se, it's what accompanies it, such as child abuse, the severe repression of women, and domestic violence.
Polygamy is a sensitive subject here in Canada and especially in BC. A recent case involving a polygamous Muslim marriage in Ontario went a little sideways when a man and his second wife actually murdered the first wife and her 3 daughters in some sick nasty "honour" thing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shafia_family_murders
In BC there has been an ongoing case involving a small Mormon community called Bountiful. The Polygamous men there have been trafficking in young pre-pubescent girls, marrying them and consummating those "marriages". Pretty fucked up stuff. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bountiful,_British_Columbia
It's pretty hard to support Polygamy when such consequences seem to follow naturally. The above examples are admittedly extreme, but hardly isolated or unprecedented.

gwiz665 says...

Why is there a problem with 3 people being married? I don't see the problem, if all three want to be married - either all three to all three, or one with two others. In the end, it's about people. If they want to, then go nuts.

Marriage is a stupid convention anyways, a mincing of words, a contract by any other name is still a contract. And that's all it is.
>> ^quantumushroom:

You misunderstand my point, as well an intent. I don't 'hate' gays and will go so far as to say it appears there is biological evidence for homosexuality (aka born this way).
I'm not even against gay marriage per se.
What I am saying is here is the side effect 'you' will create by supporting legalized gay marriage, and that is that 'you' then have no grounds for keeping polygamy illegal. You are "hating" and discriminating against polygamists and others supporting 'plural marriage', including, ironically, gay polygamists.
I've brought this up before and some sifters had the temerity to say they support both gay marriage AND polygamy, or don't care either way.
I'm sorry you feel that way @taranimator and @therealblankman. I think by now, after years, you understand I'm not here to merely piss in the punchbowl. I don't see how bringing up a very valid point about a serious legal and societal issue is 'hate'. As lovely as this video may be, it's still political propaganda, because everything is political. Everything. It was like this before we all got here and will be like that long after we're gone.
@therealblankman A better analogy would be me warning you there are possible turds in the garden before you go a-strolling. You're now more informed about the consequences.
If you think I'm wrong, so be it. Defend your position. Why gay marriage but not plural marriage? Because in your heart you "know" gays are sincere but 3 people can't be in love?

beardy man explains why indie is shit

bookface says...

Been saying it for years: indie is shit. It is pastiche pop art, meaning it's inherently derivative. Ironically, musicians and fans of indie fancy themselves counter-cultural (hipsters) when all they've managed to do is raid their parent's record collection and grandparent's wardrobe. Furthermore, there needs to be a moratorium on the following instruments: glockenspiel, celesta, toy piano, or any other bell like instrument. These are staples of the indie diet and they make any track INSTANTLY sound like a Target commercial. I could go on but indie will be dead and gone before I'd finish the rant.

A surprise for grandad

*throws even more power points at you*

I've done that to my grandparents (who I was raised by). I moved across the country for school so I never got to see them. One year I got a cheap flight on new years eve, then went over to their house with a fake mustache. My grandma couldn't stop laughing.

Then what the hell is wrong with we're going to have a baby? I'm with Boise_Lib, pregnant has a specific meaning and there is a perfectly acceptable way of saying what they want to say. It just makes my brain bend in a way I don't like. It's not important, it just bugs me.

It's a fair point to discuss.

I think, though, it's not the figurative use of language that bothers a portion of the audience in this case, but probably the overly sweet quality. The figurative use of language is a bystander.

We don't normally object to this common use of language:

"We're driving to the store now."

"No you're not! Unless your car has 2 steering wheels, one of you is driving, and the other of you is riding! Learn 2 speak."

News from the Internet -- FTW

Agreed, mainstream TV news is so disconnected from the real issues. I think back to my childhood, I remember my grandparents thought of the evening 6 o'clock news being the most important half hour of the day. Being spoon fed a variety of fear mongering stories by a model with a serious face and smooth voice the following:

Catchy musical intro...
Rape...
Tsunami expected....
Another rape...
Rugby player caught urinating in public...
Serious issue of the day...
Some breaking news about new bank fees...

ads...

A murder conviction for a famous person's ex-lover..
Corruption in the animal petting zoo society..
Some more rape, and a stabbing in broad daylight...
Stocks are up in Asia, but the FTSE index is down...
Some sports team won something...
It's raining... (thank GOD I watched the news to find that out, instead of looking outside!)

Thank god for the internet.
