Climate Change; Latest science update
>> ^ChaosEngine:
While it was a good talk, there was really nothing there to help the average person when confronted by a climate change denier. The whole thing would simply be dismissed as "deluded left wing greenie paranoia" or some such.
Frankly at this point, I've kinda given up on climate change. It's a terrible thing to say, but it's the truth. We're screwed and given the lack of political will, anything we do will be too little too late. I feel bad for kids growing up today, but their parents and grandparents have screwed them. I might vote green or recycle but I can't even absolve myself either. As a first world citizen, I drive too much, use way more than my share of land and energy.
Honestly, I wish the conversation shifted more seriously towards, "okay so we fucked up, what now?" As in, what land will be tenable, how can we prepare it for the refugees, how can we conserve the resources we'll need under those conditions, etc...

Close, but not quite. My grandparents come from Sabadell, so I get to be picky

How to Make a Better Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich
I have to agree with @Shepppard, give me the processed stuff! I don't do peanut butter and jelly but that's because I also am not a fan of jelly/jam. I do love peanut butter though (when I was a kid, my grandparents would send a jar with me to school because I was a picky eater)
I do eat peanut butter a certain way though. Now I only eat it on warm toast (wheat is best) with whole peanuts or pecans smashed into the gooey warm peanut butter.
75 Year Old Woman With A Body To Die For
The average age of becoming a grandparent is like 47, that's a GGILF right there.

Penn's Obama Rant
Never drank, never smoked, never did illegal substances....and I don't feel superior to people who drink and some illegal substances. I actually admire them if they can balance it into their life and it brings them some happiness.
I can't stand smoking, I grew up around it, had all but one grandparent die because of smoking giving them lung issues that either ultimately killed them or prevented them from getting procedures done to stop heart problems. Weak lungs would have guaranteed their death during surgery and no one would operate. So, I don't feel superior to them, but I'm an asthmatic it smells horrible, so I just can't be around them. Hell as I got older I had to quit hanging around with a friend of mine until he quit smoking because he just smoked more and more and I couldn't take being around him. Allergies, etc. Plus anytime he smoked I had to be away from him, so the more he smoked the less point there was to trying to hang out.
Illegal substances, mixed bag. Marijuana, not really a huge deal to me...I know too many functional people who use it. However I have a brother who is absolutely obsessed with marijuana, and it's obviously not beneficial to him due to that control it has over him. Cocaine, meth, heroin, etc....just seems like pissing money away for health issues you'll have to deal with later...plus a lot of substances age you prematurely or make your teeth fall out, etc. And teeth falling is something I've had nightmares about, so why the hell would I want to do that.
And I *KNOW* I have an addictive personality, this is why I don't try these things. Not because I feel superior, in fact I don't like not being able to try alcohol in particularly. I just know I would slowly slide into over-use on it. Plus most of it smells horrible, so as long as it smells horrible to me and I don't develop a taste for it...Im set.
I don't like Penn yelling/ranting like that to make his point, but I do think that they need to re-examine their drug policies. Because they seem less about drug control and more about people control, especially non-influential and poor people control. If it were about drug control, I think they'd be telling you that if they catch you on substances while driving you are out of a license immediately. Or if you commit a crime while on them, it's worse punishment. While if you're just on them and not doing anything of note.......then that's what you choose to do. I do get the argument on having to treat people who use substances.....but it's similar to people who overdose on scripts or over the counter stuff.
Rehabilitation does not happen anymore AFAIK, not like it used to. Now they work them for pennies on the dollar instead of paying minimum wage to regular workers. It's more for profit now than anything else, which I think is the real issue...they will find any law to enforce to get their populations and numbers up for profits.

Grandparents Send Awkward But ADORABLE Marriage Advice.
>> ^poolcleaner:
I can only hope that my wife to be will take pictures of me with other women that are naked.
I think that bit shows how they've been married for 72 years. A lack of insecurity about the relationship. If you're really happy and you know your partner is too, that kind of silly flirting won't bother you.
These two are great

Romney's Hypocrisy: "The Dignity of Work"
Agreed, with one small change.
It all depends on where you live, but even that's beside the next point I'll make. Families with one stay at home person are, in my opinion, at risk for a very high probability that they will have to continue working until death. No retirement.
The cost of college, owning a home, and miscellaneous bills sap any retirement savings that would be created if both parents work. In this day and age, both parents really need to work to secure a comfortable financial future for their kids and themselves.
>> ^Porksandwich:
Whole lot of logic disconnects throughout society. It's a modern miracle things just don't shut down because the disconnect is so hard to deal with sometimes.
You need a college education to get a job.
You need experience to get an entry level job, college usually does not count as experience.
Virtually no businesses are willing to train.
We have virtually no training or licensing for most jobs they want experience for, college does not even broach this subject.
Then you take all of the above stuff and you see the vast majority of jobs that pay a liveable wage (which is not minimum wage) end up being hires due to who you know instead of what you know. And it's in direct contrast to what we are often taught, recited to, and whatever else throughout school and college. You need an education to get a job, and you need to make the most of it. But we see people who are dumb as a brick get a job because they know someone ALL THE TIME. In fact this "know someone" probably decides what job you end up doing more than your skillset or education.
Then we have working families with both parents working. It's in stark contrast to the history of our species.
The fact that we went from the ability to have one parent able to provide to it being difficult to make it on two salaries means we've fucked up something. Your grandparents could do it, your parents MIGHT have been able to do it...maybe. But the likelihood of someone today able to support a household on one income is low. And your kids being able to once they are adults is probably close to zero, you'll be lucky if they don't have to live with you so you can all survive financially.
