GROUNDHOG DAY - WTF Happened to This Movie?

ant says...

*scifi *90s *history

"Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts, or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs.

Of course, this week's movie is one of the HUGE HITS we're talking about, with Groundhog Day being a top-tier classic in Bill Murray's filmography. Brilliantly directed by the late Harold Ramis, this is a movie that's spawned many imitators (including the recent Palm Springs) but, in the minds of many, will never truly be equaled..."

Videosift Sarzy's Top 10 Movies of 2017

Sarzy says...

I actually only saw Coco a few days ago, after the video was done. It wouldn't have made my top 10 even if I had, though -- I quite enjoyed it, but I'd rank it somewhere in the middle of Pixar's filmography (though if I had a list of the top 10 movies of 2017 that made me weep like a little girl, it'd be right up there).

Seth Meyers Opens 2018 Golden Globes

newtboy says...

Harpo productions is most likely why Oprah won....and her show, channel, filmography, and overall social impact. I don't know what their criteria are, do you?

ChaosEngine said:

Also, genuine question: why did Oprah win the Cecil B. de Mille Award? I mean, she's undoubtedly a successful person, but her filmography is pretty mediocre.

Seth Meyers Opens 2018 Golden Globes

I actually didn't think this was Seth's best work. I'm a big fan of his "Closer Look" segment, but I don't find him that funny with his one-liners.

Also, genuine question: why did Oprah win the Cecil B. de Mille Award? I mean, she's undoubtedly a successful person, but her filmography is pretty mediocre.

The last few winners were:
Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Jodie Foster, Woody Allen, George Clooney, Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep.

There's no way you could argue that Oprah belongs in that company. (not really sure why Clooney is there either, TBH, also get lost Woody Allen, you creepy old fuck).

But still, upvote for the sentiment if not the execution.

DeNiro, Dicaprio, Pitt, and Scorsese Sell Out for Casino Ad

ChaosEngine says...

Saddest of all is DeNiro.

Scorsese, DiCaprio, and Pitt are still doing pretty good work, but I'm looking at DeNiro's filmography right now and IMHO, the last decent movie he had anything other than a bit part in, was Ronin..... 17 years ago.

You think Scorsese would throw him a bone and give him a decent role.

The Raid Director Gareth Evans Lists His Top 5 Action Scenes

Not hipster doucheism at all -- it's pretty much impossible to deny. I mean, the first Rush Hour was fun, as was Shanghai Noon, but the rest of Chan's Hollywood filmography has been pretty weak (I mean, I don't think anyone is going to come out of the woodwork to defend the Tuxedo). And even those two pretty good films pale in comparison to pretty much anything Chan made in Hong Kong in the '80s and early '90s.

ChaosEngine said:

It sounds like the ultimate hipster doucheism, but really Jackie Chans Hong Kong movies are just so much better than his western stuff. Police Story is just so funny, it really showcases Chans comedic timing.

Reporter mistakes Samuel L Jackson for Laurence Fishburn!

newtboy says...

...and in case my answer to this was too cryptic, the reason why I think he shouldn't do this is it makes Samuel the racist to instantly assume an (perceived) identity/filmography mistake about a black man by a white man is automatically due to racism.
Racism hurts minorities the most, so they have even MORE reason to not be racist themselves, and to not see it where it doesn't exist.

It's entertainment or did you forget that? If he has an opportunity to milk a social situation in his favor, he will. And why shouldn't he? To make white people feel better? Fuck you dude.

"Stellar filmography"

Actually, it's called photography, or cinematography. (Most films have a "director of photography" or "cinematographer")

A "filmography" is a list of films.

Catwoman revealed - Dark Knight Rises (Cinema Talk Post)

EDD says...

It's worth mentioning that Warner Bros. are marketing the character as Selina Kyle rather than Catwoman, at least at this point, so I'll wager a guess that her part in DKR will be little more than a Catwoman-origins story. Also I see how her getting paws on Bruce's equipment is more in line with Nolan's realistic approach to Batman on the big screen, but assuming she only "becomes" Catwoman with the help of some gadgets, it's quite a departure from comic-book canon, isn't it?

Other than that.. Meh. Granted, I'm not THAT familiar with Anne Hathaway's filmography, but I haven't seen a single role in which her performance was anything more than barely decent. Also, she's "hot", apparently, which is something I just don't see at all, probably because she reminds me of Julie Roberts too much.

death to videodrome-long live the new flesh

shuac says...

Taking a gander at his filmography, Cronenberg has made a career out of making very cold-looking films. I'm not sure if it's the cinematography or if it's something else entirely like his storytelling style.

Far as DPs go, he had Mark Irwin for The Brood, Scanners, Videodrome, Dead Zone, and The Fly which are the main five "chilly" films I'm talking about. He then had Peter Suschitzky for all the rest, which weren't exactly warm looking either. Cronenberg doesn't have a big photography background like Kubrick so...I dunno. He must have a very clear vision from the git-go.

Martin Scorsese vs. Stanley Kubrick

Sarzy says...

Not a tough choice at all. Scorsese is an amazing director, but Kubrick is a god. No one can frame a shot like Kubrick, move the camera like Kubrick, or match visuals to music like Kubrick (no, not even Scorsese). Plus, Scorsese's filmography is filled with classics, but it also has quite a few merely good films, and even a couple of duds.
