BBC Brilliant Wrap Up Of Rio 2016 Olympics

ulysses1904 says...

Apparently I'm in the minority but I cant watch videos where no shot is retained longer than one second, it really becomes an effort to watch it. There were some potentially great shots, especially the cityscapes. But all the clips are dropped on the timeline and then diced up, what a waste.

I'm Not Scared of Donald Trump

TheFreak says...

Trump as president will be the same as Trump as presidential candidate. There won't be policies and solutions, he wants to be a demagogue, giving speeches and basking in the adulation. He will delegate the hard work of running the country to other people and stoke his ego presiding over ridiculous meetings where he gives directions and derides his cabinet for failing. "You're fired!"

President Trump will get nothing done and when he pushes the wrong buttons he'll be impeached. The Trump presidency will not be 4 years.

But this guy's video is full of shit. He blissfully ignores the fact that a president must compromise and sometimes even make the best choice from a list of undesireable options. No President can, or should be able to, get everything they want. You can never judge a politician based on every naive expectation you have, because you have the luxury of idealism while they're dealing with reality. The best you can do is support someone who's agenda best matches your own and applaud them when they succeed.

It's like pinball. You can use what control you have to push the ball where you want it but you cannot ultimately control where it goes.

This video starts out be denigrating the idea that game theory should influence our choices in politics. Well that's one of the stupidest things he could say. You cannot refuse to throw the dice in monopoly, claim all the properties and believe you're winning. You have to develop the best strategy you can for the best outcome you can manage with the rules that are in place. If you don't like the rules...change them before the next game begins. Of course, that would require you to make an effort in between games. You don't get YouTube views for that.

John Oliver: Primaries and Caucuses

newtboy says...

OK, that's fine, but I hope you will concede at least that, to the majority that see politicians with a biased and suspicious eye, she may not APPEAR 'clean'. THAT is the problem, not my personal opinion, not even reality.

It is nice to hear that you and others at least say you would support Sanders. I have honestly not heard it from Clinton supporters before.
This being reality, and if you believe the Sanders supporters that say they won't support Clinton, (and being independents and not Democrats it's likely that enough won't vote for her no matter what, and how can you blame them? She doesn't represent them.), is it not prudent, intelligent, responsible, and the only safe move to put Sanders up as the candidate as the only clearly electable choice in ALL polls instead of rolling the dice against the odds on a painful compromise?

OK. Some do say that they're the same...not me. I do see a huge differences between them, but also many similarities. The biggest disturbing similarity being that you never know what either may actually do until they've done it....if then. Said another way, neither is known for being honest. I really think that 'primary Trump' is a character, and 'candidate Trump' is going to be a new character....but 'president Trump' is a situation where another character has power....I don't know what happens then, but it's pretty scary.

bareboards2 said:

@newtboy "That's why when you are presented with a 'clean' candidate, it's astonishing to me that anyone would continue to support dirty ones."

And this is our real divide.

You want the world to be different than it is. You are astonished? I'm not. There is nothing astonishing about that.

I don't agree that Hillary is "dirty" -- no need to say more than that. Please don't inundate with proof that she makes deals and compromises and takes fees for talks.

And I disagree with your assessment that Dems, if Bernie got the nomination, would not fall behind him. I have seen it in print over and over and over again, that Hillary supporters say they will vote for the Dem nominee. I have said it repeatedly myself. No need to ask the question, because there IS no question.

It is the Sanders supporters who say they won't support Hillary and say there is no difference between her and Trump.

Do what you want. If Trump gets the presidency, we'll come back in two years and here and discuss the state of America and its relationship to the world. I predict, if that happens, that I will woefully be saying -- I told you so.

Trump as president. My god.

Progressive Dems To Clinton: This Race isn't Over

newtboy says...

I'm confused, in one paragraph you say the primary is over, but you go on to say it's not really over, it's just really over. If it's not over, it's not over, and FSM damit it's not over yet.
It was pretty improbable that he would win Alaska 82%-18%, but he did. IF he did that well in California, he could get no other vote on the 7th and still win. Improbable, maybe, highly improbable, no, certainly not this election, nothing is.
Even the exit polls have been wrong by well over 35% this year, and they are always more reliable than pre-voting polls. Bernie has HUGE support in California, I've not seen a SINGLE Hillary bumper sticker here in N Cali., despite what the (100% Clinton supporting) media has told you. Sanders winning 53% of California is not even improbable, it's within the margin of error for the polls you mention.

Hammer that message (that Sanders is a FAR better candidate for numerous reasons) into their skulls until the 7th and maybe he'll get enough of California to win...he's absolutely got my vote. Anyone who choses Hillary is rolling the dice on a Trump presidency, THEY are the ones putting us all in danger, not the Sanders supporters. What you absolutely should not be doing is claiming 'it's over so don't even bother trying'. That's simply a lie. Wait until after a nominee is named before saying anything of the sort. That the Clinton campaign has been saying it for months just shows their level of honesty....zero%.

Again, if a Trump presidency is something you fear, you should be shouting for Bernie with all your might right now....it's not over, not by far, and he is CLEARLY far and away the best choice, both for his platform and to defeat Trump.

ChaosEngine said:

We'll have agree to disagree on the merits of Clinton and Trump.

As for the rest....

I haven't been "duped" by the media. The dem primary is over in all but name. Yes, it's not mathematically impossible for Bernie to win, but it's also highly improbable.

I've done the math.

Ignoring the super delegates, Clinton has 1768 vs Bernie's 1494.
There are 714 delegates still up for grabs, so Bernie would need to win 495 of them to be the popular pledged delegate candidate. That means Bernie needs to win 69% of the remaining delegates.

The vast majority(66.6% \m/) of those delegates are in the California primary where Bernie is projected to lose. Even the most optimistic poll has him losing by 2 points. If that happens it is mathematically impossible for him to win. Even if he manages a miracle and wins California by a few points, it's STILL mathematically impossible for him to win. He would have to win at least 53% of the vote in California to even stand a chance.

Finally, you're preaching to the converted. AFAIC, Bernie is so blatantly the obvious choice, I really can't understand why anyone wouldn't vote for him. Well, I can, it's because "boo! SOCIALISM!!! Oh teh noes!", but I find it depressing to accept. I've said before that in a sane political system, you would have a choice between a centre right candidate (Hillary) and Bernie.

And yes, Bernie beats Trump more than Clinton, but the democrats don't seem to have gotten that message.

Pig vs Cookie

newtboy says...

That's certainly your choice. I'll roll the dice any day if it means bacon. I respect your right to take or avoid the risks you wish until you try to remove my right to make my own choice.

It would be nice, but no, wild boar are notoriously dangerous and aggressive, and also incredibly destructive and fertile, I don't think a sterilization program would work for many reasons. What they really need is a huge, repeating, mass hunt with big prizes (to get enough people to join for a clean sweep) so they actually eradicate them. Leaving them alive in the wild, even if neutered (which I don't think could work on pigs, since one missed female can repopulate so quickly) means years of horrendous destruction of the already endangered habitats in Hawaii.
BUSTED!!! I knew it. I've wanted to ask one of you...do pigs know what to say to someone who says to them "When pigs fly"?

I'll disagree that's it's perfectly fine food. Bacon is a type 1 carcinogen. Which means there is no doubt that it causes cancer. Non processed pork, is a type 2 carcinogen, which means it causes cancer, but they need more data to confirm it.
The risks aren't quite as high as with cigarettes but it's an extra set of dice I'm not going to roll. That's information from the W.H.O.

I'm not sure if this method would work in Hawaii, but they've had a lot of success in Europe with stray animals by using a catch a release program http://carocat.eu/the-catch-neuter-and-release-approach/. It's a little slower, but not that much since cats and dogs have a pretty short life-cycle when they are stray. I think you could make a few alterations and, the invasive boars instead of running away from hunters, would begin to approach them instead, and you could register, and neuter them.

Damn you blew my cover. I'm am indeed a pig, hence my bias in this thread. Here's a picture of me and my boat driver in the bahamas http://www.tecnologia-ambiente.it/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/maiale-isola.jpeg

Well, if you think wasting perfectly fine meat/food is OK because you don't want to get in the habit of killing your food, yes, our definitions vary. To me, once it's dead anyway, wasting it is definitely bad for no reason, and using it is good.
Also...bacon! If that's not good to you, you're not a real human being, and I accuse you of being a pig that has learned to type.

Teenager wins $400,000 for video explaining Relativity

spawnflagger says...

I liked the video too, but when he got to this part of the explanation, I wondered why I never heard it before.

Also remember that Einstein came up with special theory of relativity without the advent of quantum mechanics (btw, he didn't like Q.M. and couldn't believe that "God rolls the dice", and was later proven wrong (decades after he died though)).

My only criticism - and some youtubers have already pointed this out - is that the explanation of time dilation "..the same bodily change that happens on earth takes much longer to occur when you are moving so fast.." is wrong.

Hero Defends a Defenseless Blind Kid

SDGundamX says...

Yeah, but in the U.S. that would be a manslaughter charge. No, the kid wouldn't have meant to kill him. Yeah, the other guy started it. But he didn't have to punch the dude. He could have broken it up by pushing the guy away or physically putting himself between the attacker and the victim.

Even if the manslaughter charges didn't stick, it would almost certainly go to a civil case of the dead kid's parents suing the kid who intervened and I have no doubt they would win.

Not saying it's right, but that is the reality of the U.S. legal system. It IS dangerous to promote the message that sometimes violence is okay to teens. Things turned out okay this time because no one got permanently injured or killed. Doesn't mean the dice are always gonna roll that way though.

EDIT: To clarify my last point, what I mean is that even if someone who deserves to die gets killed, there's a high likelihood there will be serious consequences for the person who killed them. If not a prison sentence, then probably monetary damages in a lawsuit, and if not that then years spent paying lawyers to fight said charges/lawsuit.

lucky760 said:

Not. at. all. It doesn't concern me even a little.

The hero delivered a single punch to stop him, and if that blow was to result in brain damage, it's the bully's own fault. The direct, hard punches he was delivering into the blind kid's head could have caused brain damage, so if he suffered that fate instead as necessary to stop his brutal assault, too bad.

(I kind of even hope he suffered a head injury. It's more deserved than just a single punch for what he was doing. And if that was *my* kid he was brutalizing, his fate would be much worse.)

XCOM 2 - Gameplay Trailer (E3 2015)

Jinx says...

Yeah, I hope this was a pretty heavily scripted encounter to show things off rather than a representation of actual gameplay.

I'd really love to see a mechanic similar to the rewind from Invisible Inc. Purists would probably hate it, but I think turning what is basically save scumming into a limited resource does a lot to smooth out the dice rolls. I think it would be cool to have to agonize over whether you should burn a rewind to try and save that rookie or save it for a more valuable veteran.

Five minutes of Star Wars Battlefront gameplay

Payback says...

I remember when DICE bought out Trauma studios, who created the Battlefield 1942: Desert Combat mod. Possibly the best (read most fun) version of Battlefield ever, and the gameplay to which Modern Warfare and all the subsequent Battlefields owe their existence.

It's been all downhill from then...

Why can't white people stop the violence?

poolcleaner says...

This is a parody? Perhaps...

But... I grew up in Huntington Beach, in that narcissistic white drug culture. I am a product of this... parody? LMFAO. The white "elders" winking and nodding. So HILARIOUS. That video footage -- I know those locations, and I also know from experience and reputation that gun violence between not just whites and whites has occurred right around the location this footage was filmed. PCH, main, the pier -- fucking hell. Mostly a cool if not overcrowded touristy area -- but, it can erupt into random acts of violence. There's a freaking MMA gym on every other corner; TESTOSTERONE INSPIRED, X-GAME/MMA SPONSORED RICH ASSHOLE CENTRAL. There is a problem and it's overly meta with all of your weird perspectives outside my white ghetto.

All of the cool downtown areas of socal have this tendency though. Some of it racial between not just white people -- the Mexican girls who beat the Vietnamese girl to death in downtown Santa Ana not too many years ago, just because she photo bombed them. It's all a part of the same problem really, and not just white culture, but it still remains one side of the dice of random youth violence in the county.

The propaganda machine will say this is an all time low, but I can't ignore the fact that I grew up right there in that video and know it all first hand! And that's what news is about. Not an agenda. It's getting it right. It's funny because it's true. NOT parody -- unless treating white people like they treat the rest of people is considered "parody". That's the only parody I witnessed in this video, which is pretty incidental to me.

Understanding Alcoholism - The West Wing

poolcleaner says...

Yeah, it's a bitch. I didn't know I was an alcoholic until I was running away from hard times. Then even after I had gained a marginal amount of success, the alcohol remained. Fucking alcohol. It really does make you a different person. Sometimes a very very excellent, if not womanizing person. But sometimes a monster. Best I avoid the stuff beyond what I think I need or can handle, one drink at parties. Parties can be bad if I violate this. Or good -- it's a gamble lol.

You know what though, it's addiction period. I stopped drinking, my life improved; but, I replace it with something else. I am addicted to video games. I do 80+ hour, no sleep binges playing a game I'm seeking to master. Addiction.

Pretty soon I will have to go cold turkey even on things like marijuana, which make me mellow, happy, heightened senses, and artistic/creative focus/drive, and which my peers claim is not addicting. Nah, everything in my life is an addiction. Even creative endeavors or day to day work -- it commands my utter and impenetrable existence, allowing my world to fall to shambles, meanwhile I create art or engineer new false existence. A system of dice I throw forever for no real reason other than I am addicted forever to throwing dice. Boom. Boom. Cards. Mmm, yeah, gambling is fun and bad too, and consume entire weekends. Sex. Typing things. It's ALL addiction to me.

The only thing I get from typing my mind is the rush and addiction to the finality of saying the truth, regardless of the consequences. It just comes out and the fists raise my adrenaline and I'm fighting now. Haahhahahahahaha!!! Addiction! Adrenaline. Energy. I'll run for 4 hours straight to achieve a moment of elation and existence outside of the day to day shuffle. Addicted to life? I sit at my desk addicted to death? No, life. I am addicted to EVERYTHING.

Star Wars Battlefront Reveal Trailer

Xaielao says...

I'm very fearful that EA is going to push this game into a launch window it simply isn't ready for. This trailer is in-engine representation of a pre-alpha game. They have 9 months to finish it and I just don't see them getting a high quality, bug free AAA game out in that time when they aren't even into Alpha yet. I really hope I'm wrong but this is EA and their track record (as well as Dices) speaks otherwise.
