Mitch McConnell Freezes During Press Conference

newtboy says...

Perhaps, something about MAGA sure seems to cause more brain damage than a full blown meth addiction in once intelligent people, but even with functioning brains 80 year olds are not as in touch with current events, morals, or norms, nor do they have skin in the game.

It’s easy to vote for programs or projects that won’t have to be paid for, or whose deleterious effects won’t be felt until long after their death….like denying climate change. They can gamble recklessly with the future to see monetary benefits today because they won’t be here when their gamble fails disastrously in 20 years to pay the piper themselves.
I think people making the rules and laws should be expected to live under them for a minimum of 20 years, maybe more, making the age cutoff for election below 60. Nobody is getting smarter or more up to date and in tune with current events and new advanced methods of problem solving after 60.
Once upon a time experience was a valuable feature in a politician, but today the best you could say is they have lots of experience at failure and partisan gridlock no matter which party they’re in. 2 terms is enough for presidents, it should be plenty for senators, representatives, and Supreme Court justices. Professional politicians are an anathema to America, as is a political ruling class or politicians getting rich while in office, and we now have all 3 as the norm.

Rent: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

newtboy says...

1)Exactly what in your post was satire? This?….” Dad taught me well and will deal with them according.”? (Now THAT’S satire)
2)Directly on topic…you implied we think your dad must be racist because he’s Republican. I explained. Also, nice you don’t disagree with my explanation, you just incorrectly claim it’s off topic.
3) see #2
4) ? Only a moral and ethical obligation, or to Republicans, no obligation whatsoever. 🤦‍♂️
5) better get it in writing, yes. Even if your siblings agree, their children might not. You could be setting up a future lawsuit or the dissolution of your family. If everyone agrees, in writing, then good on you…..but as I mentioned, it’s not a real offer to sell because it sounds like the couple couldn’t afford any price. A real offer would be to let them rent to own at maybe a slight rent increase….they might be able to take advantage of that offer.

Edit: 6) If they have no new income, and barely bring in enough to pay the discounted rent, how do you expect them to come up with an extra $5k, +$3500 (and rising) per year, + $100+ per month more…especially with the Republican plan to make the poor pay more taxes, and end social security and Medicare/Medicaid …how will they ever convince a bank they can keep up payments? And they wouldn’t get 6%….wtf man? Do they have perfect credit? That’s prime, they don’t qualify for a fixed loan at prime rates if they need discounted rent….and no bank is going to give 80 year olds a 30 year loan. The highest prime rates were 21%, unlikely in the near future, but rates are skyrocketing. Now, if you carried the loan yourself, you COULD offer those rates, but a bank never would.
If their kids have cash and are willing to gift it to their parents regularly, and if your family carried the discount loan, it could work.

Sure, sounds simple, but reality isn’t that simple, especially if you don’t have a net worth more than the loan. Year one they would need a minimum of $10k extra to do this if your loan numbers were right, and they aren’t from a bank. Year 2-30 they would need $5k more than they spend now….+ all repairs, tax hikes, interest rate hikes, etc. a great deal to be sure, but not feasible for poor elderly people who will likely lose all their income if Republicans regain power. It more than doubles their housing costs year one.

4 Good deal and a kind landlord. That being said the landlord is under no obligation to rent to anyone under current market value.

5 Siblings all agree to let it go to the renters and the 50 to 60% discount . All I need is a email/ letter stating their agreement.

6 I think they might be able to do this at 5% down ( or zero). The bank will see a 50K equity in the new owners the moment they sign the papers.

For 30 years / fixed / 3500 property tax/year
At 120K @6% about 1200/month
At 60K @6% about 800/month
At 50K @6% about 730/month

Current rent 695/month
IF they / their kids can put down 10% ( 5K) payments drop about 100bucks

This is simple. Buy the house for 1/2 off and put 50K in you pocket at the closing.

"I would have run into Florida School ... Unarmed" trump

Drachen_Jager says...

“So what happens is, this guy falls off right on his face, hits his head, and I thought he died. And you know what I did? I said, ‘Oh my God, that’s disgusting,’ and I turned away,” said Trump. “I couldn’t, you know, he was right in front of me and I turned away. I didn’t want to touch him… he’s bleeding all over the place, I felt terrible. You know, beautiful marble floor, didn’t look like it. It changed color. Became very red. And you have this poor guy, 80 years old, laying on the floor unconscious, and all the rich people are turning away. ‘Oh my God! This is terrible! This is disgusting!’ and you know, they’re turning away. Nobody wants to help the guy. His wife is screaming—she’s sitting right next to him, and she’s screaming.”

Thank God for the Marines. “What happens is, these 10 Marines from the back of the room… they come running forward, they grab him, they put the blood all over the place—it’s all over their uniforms—they’re taking it, they’re swiping [it], they ran him out, they created a stretcher. They call it a human stretcher, where they put their arms out with, like, five guys on each side,” shared Trump.

“I was saying, ‘Get that blood cleaned up! It’s disgusting!’ The next day, I forgot to call [the man] to say he’s OK,” said Trump, adding of the blood, “It’s just not my thing.” - Donald Trump

Millennial Home Buyer

newtboy says...

Not in decent neighborhoods, they don't...actually not at all according to Zillow.
My brother's shithole teardown <1000 sq ft 2 bed 1 bath 75 year old house just sold for over $500000.
Looking at Zillow, the absolute cheapest I see for a house in Austin (not condo, not an empty lot) is $199k for a 780 sq ft "home" over 80 years old. I think prices have gone up since you looked last.

Mordhaus said:

Wow. homes in Austin start around 150k depending on the neighborhood. Of course, we are one of the more expensive places to live now with all the taxes.

Via NC: Ignored for Years, a Radical Economic Theory Is Gaining Converts

That's Bloomberg reporting on Post-Keynesianism/MMT. On the front page, no less. They paint it as something radical, as if the works of Keynes, Kalecki and Minsky (or Knapp in Germany 100 years ago) never made it out of the dark corners of economic theory. Post-Keynesianism, at its core, is 80 years old, it has merely been pushed aside by monetarists and the likes.

Still, kudos to Bloomberg for shining some light on MMT.

george carlin-how language is used to mask truth

Babymech says...

I know this is what he and a lot of others want to think, but for most of his examples, just like his example of stupidity vs learning disability, there are actual and reasonable grounds for the name changes. PTSD vs shell-shocked, for example, isn't a case of trying to be 'less offensive' - shell shock was an informal term coined by soldiers to describe a range of experiences and symptoms, and combat stress syndrome, PTSD, etc, were developed by professionals who wanted to make an actual diagnosis (to me, shell shock sounds a lot less harmful than PTSD, because I'm not 80 years old). It's a case of people with more expertise and knowledge than Carlin trying to create concepts that are actually useful. You could call it 'murder crazy' if you want to be 'raw' but that doesn't get us anywhere. This is the problem with Carlin's thesis - he brings in terms that he doesn't understand, describing situations that don't affect him directly, and tries to cram it into some 'old white man post-relevance get off my lawn syndrome' (OWMPGOMLS).

I know that a lot of people agree with what they see as his underlying point. I'm just saying that his examples here don't support that point.

asynchronice said:

I think you're taking a very narrow view on the point he eventually arrives to at the end. Shellshocked/PTSD/Battle Fatigue is the perfect example of the exact same thing being watered down into it's least offensive 'sounding' form. It's not two different things (say stupidity vs dyslexic).

Chinese Couples vs. Western Couples

GenjiKilpatrick says...

Ugh, really? Were you not hugged as a child?

Is that why you always nay-say and intentionally miss the point of every video?

- Firstly, cliche & stereotypes can still be humorous or provoking..

It's part of the reason they become overused, lots of people can relate.

- Secondly, THE VIDEO IS COMPARING THE CLICHES PRESENT IN CHINESE VS AMERICAN RELATIONSHIPS!!

Wtf, man. That's the point of the video.

To give both types of couple a little chuckle and go "yeah, that's definitely us".

For comedy purposes.. cause it's a comedy youtube channel..

If you don't find cliches funny, wtf would you watch more than half the video..?

Old man shows some major skills!

artician says...

I used to box for exercise. You won't connect every shot if you're throwing punches wildly, and he did not only that but throwing powerful hooks. Looking the movement of his body and his footwork, the guy was probably a boxer of some skill early in his life.
My boxing instructor was 80 years old when I started with him, and even at the age where he would awkwardly shuffle around the outside of the ring, once he was in, I literally could not see his hands, they moved so fucking fast.
I'm thinking once it gets drilled into you, it never really leaves.

ChaosEngine said:

@artician I'm not a boxer, but to me it looked like the old guy was just flailing wildly.

Shows what you know about the rapist mentality -- it isn't (always) about sex, my friend.

80 year old nuns have been raped. Downs syndrome and disabled men and women have been raped. Fat women have been raped. The whole rape culture in prison, nary a slender woman in a miniskirt in sight. It can be about control and power and anger.

Besides, even for those men motivated by lust, what are the odds that zero percent of them are attracted to women of size? Women are shamed about being large, men are shamed about finding large women attractive, so you may not even be aware that there are men out there who like large women.

I don't think you are a horrible person -- I think you are uninformed of the complexities of the subject.

I know you are just making an offhand, presumably mildly funny?, remark and here I am, getting all complicated. However, this comment is the seed from which the mighty oak "she was asking for it" grows. Just thought I'd take the opportunity to point that out.
