Vox explains bump stocks

Mordhaus says...

The thing about bump stocks that people are not realizing is that they are simply a mod that allows you to do the same thing you could already do with many semi-automatic weapons, emulate automatic fire.

There is a slightly more dangerous method which can be done simply by not bracing the stock and using the pistol grip. Many semi-auto weapons also can easily be 'broken' to cause slamfires, where the rounds are auto-fired as soon as they are loaded due to a stuck firing pin.

I highly believe in gun rights and the second amendment. But this latest tragedy has finally done it. There is simply no need to have that many semi-automatic rifles in one's possession. We need to re-enact the AWB from 1994, we need to set a cap limit on how many semi-automatic rifles a person can own, and we need to clearly state that ANY modification that can simulate automatic fire is illegal.

We have fostered a state where the mentally ill are no longer being treated or taken care of, except by drugs. Since it is clear that we have multitudes of people separated from becoming the next mass murderer simply based on whether to not they took their meds (or were diagnosed correctly to begin with), we need to make a stricter environment that prevents these people from getting the weapons to make it easier.

What happens when you're drunk AND stoned at the same time?

Mordhaus says...

I've only done this once. I will never do it again. In 1994, I turned 21. During my party, a friend brought both Weed and Jack Daniels. I partook of both heavily.

For the first time ever, I was almost unable to move. I've been drunk. I've been high. Never before was I rendered nigh motionless. I would not have placed this on the "Never do again so help me" list if that was the end of the experience.

Later that night, a powerful nausea unlike any I had experienced before or since came upon me. I had barely regained my equilibrium and in the process of vainly trying to make it to the bathroom, I took out a wall in my friend's mobile home. Let me be clear, I am not in any way exaggerating when I said I took out a wall. I was a defensive lineman in school and I was still mostly the same size 3 years later.

I landed in a heap of broken plywood and 2x4's, my friend and his girlfriend awoke to the noise and noticed their bedroom had a new entry. They then were treated to projectile vomit which spewed about the room as I tried to get up and out to the bathroom. They freaked out, got up and tried to run out, forgetting that they were naked. I was able to get up finally, and stumbled back out of their room, where I blearily noticed that everyone who was still hanging about the party were gawking at us. Me, covered in puke, a glow in the dark OP T-shirt, and bleached jeans. My friend and his girl covered in puke alone.

Puke glows oddly under blacklight, let me tell you. Anyhow, we all got cleaned up, I changed clothes, and then my future wife took me home. I went back a week later, after the shame had worn off a bit, to get my clothes. My friend had moved, his rented trailer was padlocked, and I never heard from him again.

If by some miracle you are reading this, Ricky, apologies bud.

Something's Rotten In Iowa-Sanders Won Coin Toss

shang says...

People forget, Hillary scammed tons of money with the Whitewater scandal for decades until it was leaked in 1992, but they protected Hillary by everyone else in the partnership taking the heat but her, then very quickly almost without media catching it Bill Clinton as lame duck end of term pardoned everyone involved in Whitewater, in 1994 Hillary was stealing money "again", her law firm partner "fell on his sword" accepting the blame keeping Hillary safe, 1996 democrat fundraising head "fell on his sword" receiving 17 count indictment for money again.

there's ton of stuff even back to her youth with money scams and always wiggling out of it.

“In 1997, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, along with several other groups, filed a lawsuit against Hillary Clinton and Donna Shalala over closed-door meetings related to the health care plan. The AAPS sued to gain access to the list of members of the task force. Judge Royce C. Lamberth found in favor of the plaintiffs and awarded $285,864 to the AAPS for legal costs; Lamberth also harshly criticized the unethical tactics especially as she was a partner in a lawfirm, at least before it was shut down due to her partner "falling on his sword for theft and scamming clients".

“In the weeks before the inauguration, he [Vince Foster] had worked intensively with another Arkansas lawyer to expunge Bill and Hillary’s financial records of a shady land deal – a scandal later known as the Whitewater affair… One of his [Vince Foster’s] first jobs in the White House was to try to make sense of the Clintons’ false tax returns concerning the Whitewater land investment. A note in his hand-writing, found much later, warned that Whitewater was “a can of worms you shouldn’t open.”

Vince Foster was assassinated 1993.

Socialism explained

oritteropo says...

The real Ronald Reagan was in favour of a social safety net for the truly needy, despite being known for the 1981 Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act which cut benefits for some of the better-off welfare recipients. Also, if you look at his position on immigration (granted amnesty in 1986) and gun control (banned open carry in California, banned sale of machine guns in 1986, lobbied for the ban on assault rifles in 1994) you'll find that he is politically far to the left of any of the current Republican presidential candidates.

The real Barack Obama proposed income tax rates lower than under Reagan, and if he's ever proposed socialist style wealth redistribution then I didn't hear about it. From over here he looks centre right poitically, so it's a little bit jarring to hear people talk about him as if he's a leftist!

I Made A Mistake I Bought A (Lemon) Jeep

oritteropo says...

There weren't Jeeps here until 1994 when Chrysler returned to Australia, before that I think there were only a few antique Willys Jeeps (actually Jimbo's big bag'o'trivia says they were still making them until the 1980s, but I don't ever remember seeing a new one and can't confirm it).

Our consumer protection laws are generally stronger than in the U.S., but I do see the point of a lemon law, particularly since cars are so much more expensive here.

newtboy said:

Odd. Do you know who made the motors in 1970 through 87 there? Still "Jeep"?
That wasn't the case in America, where Jeep was never it's own company.
Here in America, that (70-87) was the AMC years, coming after Kaiser (in 1953, first called Kaiser-Fraiser, then Willies, then Kaiser-Jeep), which all came after the Willies Overland company, who essentially copied the Bantom design for the military in early WW2, then made civilian Jeeps for years under the Willies name.
In my opinion, any Jeep made after they switched to rectangular headlights and plastic (early 80's) isn't worth having.
I have a 73 CJ-5 that came stock with a 304 AMC V-8 (and now has a 360 AMC V-8 from a donor Wagoneer). It's an unstoppable trail monster, but too hard on my back for me to drive any more.

I hope you guys get a decent lemon law out of this. He wrote a good campaign song for the bill right here.

TIE Fighter - Epic Anime short - Go Empire!!

MilkmanDan says...

Nope. I have been a big Star Wars fan since I was a young kid (not quite old enough to have seen ANH or ESB in theaters, but I did see RotJ on the big screen, plus of course watching them all on TV many many times growing up) but somehow I missed out on those games.

Quick google shows Wing Commander 1 as 1990, Wing Commander 3 at 1994, TIE Fighter also in 1994, and X-Wing Alliance in 1999. I played those Wing Commander games (and others), and played a lot of Star Wars games during that span, including stuff like Shadows of the Empire and Rogue Squadron for N64. But somehow the X-Wing and TIE Fighter stuff stayed off my radar at the time.

Should I check GOG?

Weird Al and a Group of Autistic Kids Sing "Yoda"...

Tingles says...

*quality

Yoda was my favorite childhood song, I had no idea it had been based on a song called Lola back then. It didn't matter, was 9yrs old. Vancouver, 1994'ish, went to a Weird Al Concert (hoping for this song) with my parents at the Queen Elizabeth Theater and he played almost everything except...(Yoda). . Then encore, says "this is a song about a little green man" The entire audience of kids lose their minds and he sings Yoda as his last song. He probably repeated the chorus 15 times.

Amazing how this random shit sticks with you. I am damn happy this ridiculous song is still bringing happiness and doing good things 20+ years after it did good for me.

First Microwave Upgrade in Forever: Infrared Heat Sensor

I have a microwave that detects heat and has a "warm this"-button, using a weight sensor, heat sensor and humidity sensor to heat the food perfectly. It works great, and it's from 1994.

"Convenience Store" sketch from Kids in the Hall

ulysses1904 says...

Yeah none of their monologues ever worked for me. They were all just filler and none of them were memorable like the sketches. I saw them in Boston in 2000 on their first reunion tour. We drove through a freakin blizzard to get there but that made it that much more special. We thought they were done for good after 1994 so it was cool to see them.

Anything they have done since is painful to watch so I bought the complete series on DVD and just skip the monologues.

SquidCap said:

I really should make my edited version of the series.. Cut out every single Scott Thompson gay monologue out. Not because i hate gays or Scott but having a 7 minute touching monologue in the middle of 20 minute comedy sketch show just does not work. Plus i hate the fake lisp, no matter if it's woman or man.
