Police Brutality: Cop Shoots, Kills Unarmed Man & His Dog

NordlichReiter says...

Cut funding for starters. Decrease the department sizes.

Lack of funding will not prevent bad decisions. Cheap equipment will not stop abuse of power. Anyone with a pistol can storm in and shoot you whether they're getting paid for it or not.
One solution is more widespread decentralized surveillance, run by private individuals. Doing this has gotten fairly inexpensive, and will only decrease in cost. A cop might think twice about acting inappropriately if he understands there is a reasonable chance of it ending up on YouTube.
If we're to have police then I would like them to have proper equipment and tech, but if you're concerned about accountability then citizens can provide that with their own tech... people mostly step out of line when they think they won't get caught. Starving the law enforcement system of money just reduces their ability to carry out legitimate duties.

Sure it won't keep them from storming in and shooting you with a pistol. But it will keep them from flash banging your house, bashing your door in, and then proceeded to kill everyone in the house with an M14 Rifle.

The last time I called the police it was because of a suspicious car parked near the entrance of my subsection where there are no houses. She came to my door wearing her QRT gear; tazer, chestplate, tac pants (tucked into her boots) zip tie cuffs, pepper spray, and leg holster.

Firstly when was the last time you saw a Patrol Officer wearing gear like that, and secondly who the fuck sends a QRT unit to a 10-48, 10-66, or 10-15; depending on department codes.

She was pretty hawt too, but that's beside the point.

The point is, I don't need to see officers driving around my neighborhood wearing military grade gear. That's not command presence that's intimidation, to the average citizen who doesn't know anything about escalation.

5 days to make one part seems slightly impractical for main stream application. Very cool none the less. Perhaps with some gene modifications on their mycelium they could get faster yieldings. Gl with that yall, sounds nifty.

that's just 5 days for the process to take place , it does not affect production time really as what you do is you would set up say 3,000 parts in 1 day and then you just have to wait 5 days for them to cure and they are ready.

pretty much the same way as sum-one would have to wait 5 days for delivery , or for example with stamping it can take a day or so for the stamp to be made before productoin can start.

if you are an industrial packager , a 5 day wate time on say a 10,000 10 million part order is totally negligible.

once production has started and you have filled the 5 day cure buffer then production speed of x product would be excaltly the same as other productoin processes as well

Obama Backs Mosque Near Ground Zero

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

FYI, the biggest deficit reducing bill passed in decades was health care reform

To start with - Obama increased the deficit from 0.5T to 1.5T in 18 months. Yeah - he's a REAL Deficit Hero that one (gag)...

1. The CBO has reported that HCR is going to cost hundreds of billions more than projected. This is what government programs do best. They come up with farcical, imaginary 'projections' to get votes and then ignore them and run overbudget by bazillions.

2. Using the CBOs kindest, most favorable, most unrealistic & biased analysis to date - the HCR will only reduce the deficit by only 100 billion dollars in a 10 years. 10 billion a year. The U.S. Federal Goverment loses 10 billion dollars farting in a bathroom. The 'deficit reduction' aspect of HCR is a bad joke even if it isn't all a completely lie (which it is).

3. This of course assumes the program doesn't GREATLY run over costs - which would be a first in the annals of government. Far more likely is the outcome that HCR will run vastly over-budget and will ADD to the U.S. deficit by becoming a massive social entitlement.

4. We didn't need HCR to strip human freedom from citizens to reduce the deficit. We could have done that by slashing governmenet budgets across the board.

Do you think LIndsay Lohan should be released from jail? (User Poll by Tymbrwulf)

That's some quality outrage there. You could be right- perhaps the Jon Stewart video should have been deleted as well- I'm not a perfect judge. Although I would resist any notion that I would let a poll stay up based on the person who posted it.

Anyway, we do want to keep the Sift Talk front page primarily to do with things related to VideoSift - although this poll may have had some VideoSift questions in it - it was put together in a confusing way - to be honest, I'm not sure what it was asking.

>> ^Throbbin:

I salute you @Tymberwulf, for having the intestinal fortitude to challenge the prevailing winds of VS. Jon Stewart? Sure - certainly sounds like it fits within "videosift related or related to "online video" in some fashion", don't it?
Could be that the original rational offered by @dag - that there are just so many Jon Stewart vids on VS so it's cool - is kinda weak? Maybe there's just something I'm missing. Maybe a double standard was exposed, and maybe it's just not cool to bring that kind of thing to light.
The worst part is that Tymberwulfs poll included an element related to videosift i.e. the inclusion of options pushing for channel-specific polls. In my humble opinion, that is considerably closer to the stated guidelines for a poll than a poll about a beard on a tv show. This indirect approach unfortunately results in suggestions of a stick in Tymberwulfs ass by @Sarzy. How very sad.
Some would say it is better to go along to get along. Others would say that's an awful way to view things.

How to quickly multiply numbers between 10 and 20

joedirt says...

This is dumb.. it doesn't work outside of 10 to 20??!!

18 x 12 = 10*10 + 8*10 + 2*10 + 8*2

see why this 18+2=200 part works??? (then add in 8*2)

(10 + * (10 + 2) = FOIL...
that is all he is doing, but he is combining three operations as add 18+2

This works with all numbers, but in his way only works for 10 to 20 because of the 10 and 10 leading factors.

Should We Bring back the Siftquisition? (redux) (User Poll by dag)

What is this? Some kind of procedural misdirection? You probably think we should start over from the beginning.

We have the votes. The Siftopian people are speaking- and what they want is Siftquisition reform.

>> ^peggedbea:
soooo assuming @Sarzy and @choggie really did vote 'yes' when they actually meant to vote 'no' (and gee, that could never happen on an actual siftquisition could it?), this makes it a tie vote. 19 to 19 right now.

Jimmy Kimmel Ambushes Jay Leno on Leno's Own Show

Grimm says...

Leno's hands aren't exactly clean. It was Leno's people that planted a story in the NY Times reporting that the NBC executives wanted Carson out and Leno in. Carson was humiliated by the story and took it very personal. As a result he announced his retirement earlier then expected instead of Oct 1992 which would have been Carson's 30th anniversary. Carson had made it publicly known before all this that he wanted to stick it out at least to his 30th anniversary. Leno not only denied knowing anything about it but denied that any of his people had anything to do with it. Even Carson and his people knew that the story came from Leno's people but Leno was still in denial.>> ^bareboards2:
One thing that is missing from this whole spat is HOW Conan got the show to start with. He pushed out Leno by demanding the Tonight Show within five years of his last contract. That is a pretty low move. Carson was allowed to retire when he wanted.
So maybe some of this is payback by Leno.
The whole thing is stupid. Craig Ferguson taking the high road sums it up for me. He's a class act in my book, even with all his fart jokes.

There's no way that Leno wasn't in on this, and there' no way Kimmel didn't get these question in advance. His jokes weren't ad-libbing, and Leno's questions were practially written to elicit these kinds of responses. I think NBC is trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. They know this fracas is ratings gold, and they're trying to milk it.
That said, it was a good bit.

It's the Seventh Sign. Winstonfield has nailed it. I can't believe all you people taken in by this. Leno's new show is tanking, so they are generating a fake three-way feud to push up ratings. Just like that last Conan "feud".

Jimmy Kimmel Ambushes Jay Leno on Leno's Own Show

Grimm says...

I don't know why you think Conan is whining about it. All he has said (joking aside) is that no one should feel sorry for him and that he has decided that he is just not interested in going along with the changes proposed because he feels that it's a big mistake for "The Tonight Show" franchise and if that means NBC goes on without him then so be it.>> ^MaxWilder:

If you can get some good jokes out of it, fine. But don't whine.

How Leno could go home and polish his 300 Ferraris after that without a debilitating sense of shame is beyond me.

He hasn't used any of his Tonight Show earnings on his cars. He hasn't spent it at all as I understand. It seems likely he'll use it for some charities or humanitarian causes in the future, when he's got free time to make sure it gets used correctly (ala Bill Gates). Kimmel is painting Leno as a self-indulgent maniacal millionaire and I don't think there's proof to back that up.

"Listen Jay, Conan and I have children; all you have to take care of is cars. I mean we have lives to lead here; you've got $800 million, for God's sakes — leave our shows alone."
Oh my fucking goodness, this might just be THE most memorable (non-political) smackdown I've seen on late night. How Leno could go home and polish his 300 Ferraris after that without a debilitating sense of shame is beyond me.

I'm sure he doesn't feel TOO bad, after all Kimmel and O'Brien are multi-millionaires too, it's not like their kids will ever go hungry.
