Cost of living 2001 vs today

newtboy says...

Totally *debunked *lies and bullshit. I saw this on YT and laughed at the stupidity.

1. That was not $81 worth of groceries in 2021. It was a minimum of $175 at full price. I buy groceries in California and I pay attention to prices.
Soda prices have actually gone down in California significantly since since the pandemic ended, so has milk and bacon.
More ridiculous MAGA lies.
He had to cherry pick non sale high price brands to make it that expensive…where’s the video of him buying the same brands not on sale two years ago at 1/2 the price?
Have prices gone up? yes….by 10-15% since 21, not 100%+. 🤦‍♂️

2. Who is the “they” who “printed $10 trillion” @bobknight33? It’s not the Biden administration. I know where at least $8 trillion went…and wouldn’t be a bit surprised to find another $2 trillion spent off the books by the former administration. In fact, if I recall the Trump billionaire tax cuts were expected to cost about $1 trillion per year indefinitely, while the tax vacation for wage earners ended with most paying far more today than pre-Trump….so you can blame almost $3 trillion of Biden’s debt on Trump policy. 😂

Edit- OK, I misheard, I thought he said $89, not $81, and 2021, not 2001…since 2001 prices have gone up almost 75%…still not well over 100%, no where near 140%.
I was thrown by the $10 trillion figure given at the end, because since 2001 the fed has “printed” $30 trillion, not $10 trillion. $10 trillion is what MAGA nuts claim Biden has added.

Paris Burns As Macron Remains Defiant

newtboy says...

Typical of you to not watch the video and completely misinterpret the issue.

Had you watched it, you would maybe understand the protests aren’t over the age changes, they’re over Macron unilaterally making the change without any parliamentary vote….

…so you can comprehend, imagine if Biden lowered the age for Social Security and Medicaid by presidential order without consulting congress. You would be out there burning government buildings right now calling him the Devil.

You think average people live to 94 or older…or can you simply not do the math? (I know which). 77 (average lifespan) - 67 (retirement age in America) = 10 years…10 years of retirement after 50 at work is too much. Seriously. You should be able to rest a few more years after 67.

Millionaires paid 75%+ tax when it started. Go back to that and exempt anyone making over $150k or with over $2 million in the bank from collecting, 3-1 is totally sustainable.

Clearly you don’t understand what a ponzi scheme is or how they work.

When Social security was enacted, retirement was relatively unknown and the elderly largely lived as paupers, destitute, relying on the kindness of strangers for their meager existence. The disabled were put in horrific institutions. How do you think that would work today?

The simple solution is enact and enforce reasonable income/net worth limits. If those that don’t need it stop taking it, it functions fine…but the rich want their slice too until they can destroy the safety net they don’t need.

62 to 64 retirement age..
some government cheese for 30+ years.
Seriously.
You should be able to work few more years.

Granted there are differences between a labor and an accountant on ones body after 30 years of work.

Social security is a ponzi scheme.
Once introduced the average life span was 67 and SS come started at 65.

+ there were about 5 putting in for every 1 taking out. Now its about 3 to 1. Unsustainable.

You simply deny any source that isn’t far right propaganda lies, so why should I bother. Even straight up .gov statistics have been discarded by you if you don’t like them.
I linked a source. You can type “google” too, right? Or is it banned in Russia, comrade? How about the DA? Police? Court records? All agree, all say the same thing, so must all be fake hit pieces.
You utter moron. I think your IQ is well below my dogs. They at least learn quickly that I’m always protecting them, always steering them in the right direction, even when it’s uncomfortable for them. You would be left to burn in the barn, insisting it’s fake fire and trying to bite.

Yes, you earn an “S” for stupid…as usual. The best grade you’ve earned in your life.

In the Blink of an Eye: Space in an Instant

StukaFox says...

It's fairly amazing how short the Stelliferous Era (the time period in which stars exist) is during the entire birth-to-death of the universe. It's roughly 10^6 - 10^14 years (one million to 100 trillion years from the Big Bang to stellar death, or a span of one million million x 8 years). This seems like a very long time, but on the universal time scale, it's not. "Matter" in the universe will exist for ~10^~125 years, or ten unquadragintillion (yes, that's a real word)

This is the equivalent (if I'm doing the math right) of the total life of the universe being a length of one mile, the entire age in which stars exist is the width of a playing card approximately one millimeter from the start.

For comparison, the atomic decay of Xenon-124 into Tellurium-124 is about 18 sextillion years (1.8 x 10^22 years), roughly 1 trillion times the current age of the universe.

Romans 10:9-10

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved

When you do that, believing that Jesus died for your sins, God will save you and make you a new person. You're good if you don't care where you are going after you die, if you leave it as you believe up to chance. Yet the evidence that God exists is undeniable, and the coming of His Son Jesus Christ was predicted by prophecies going back thousands of years. So you're not really leaving it up to chance because the scripture tells you that you have no excuse for ignorance.

Romans 1:18-20

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse

You would say, I am sure, that you haven't seen any evidence for God but the scripture says you have and you have suppressed the truth about it. I believe scripture and in our conversations I am sorry to say you are always poisoning the well of reasoned debate with mockery and ridicule. What is behind that is a heavy bias and angst which keeps you from seeing who God is. Being obstinate against the truth of Gods word is foolish. Why not give God the benefit of the doubt and at least ask Him to show you if what I have been telling you all of these years is true?

"Alternative Math" - The confusing times we live in

bcglorf says...

They play this like it's a hypothetical future when up here in my part of Canada it's actually more historical.

A teacher in Edmonton was fired for giving student's a zero on assignments they didn't hand in:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/edmonton-teacher-suspended-for-giving-0s-1.1131453

After a few years in court he's won on appeal but yet to be seen if that's going to be the end of it. In my province of Manitoba, there is a tacit no fail policy in place where keeping any kids back a grade is almost unheard of. Not only does it require parent's permission and approval before holding a student back, but sometimes even then kids have been pushed along forwards a grade, ready or not.

If you look through and provincial standard math curriculum, it includes gems like this.

http://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/k12/cur/math/mathcurr.html

For a problem like 7 + 5, providing the answer 12, is incorrect. You are instead supposed to show multiple methods of solving the problem, like saying 7 is the same as 2+5 and I know 5+5 is 10, so 10 +2 is 12, thus the answer is 12. It's absolute stupidity, institutionalised and made into a standard. The nutjobs like those in this video have already pretty much 'won' up here in Canada and the struggle is to get back to a sane world where Math and education aren't butchered.

Is Trump Under Investigation? He and His Lawyers Disagree

Drachen_Jager says...

Why doesn't Trump talk about how much he's winning?

It seemed like that was all he could say on the campaign trail, but since he's taken office, he hasn't claimed many "wins" (and most of those he HAS claimed were actually things Obama did and Trump's just trying to take credit for).

@bobknight33 Your thoughts? On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the Golden State Warriors and 1 being the L.A. Clippers, how's Trump doing?

Burger King Employee Pranked To Break Windows

eric3579 says...

First off i'm not sure where anyone is planning on raising the min wage to 15hr immediately(I don't know one way or another for sure). Even if the California bill passes for a min wage of 15hr its rolled out over six years. I think the first bump is fifty cents(10 to 10.50). Arriving at 15hr in 2022.

I also think the way you raise wages for everyone is exactly this way. The pressure to pay more for more skilled positions comes from the bottom.

(edit)
On another note. Ive never understood the attitude that if im not going to get more, then others shouldn't get more. Also a few of the people i hear saying there shouldn't be a 15 hr min wage are people who make quite a bit of money themselves($75,000 and up). They are so quick to judge others work value. It boggles my mind how workers will argue against other workers getting a bit more. The powers that be(owners) have duped you into doing there work for them it seems to me.

ForgedReality said:

So you can't possibly live on less than $15/hr? I feel like maybe that's more an issue of your money management skills then.

Sure, $6/hr is probably not enough. But it wasn't too long ago when 15 was a pretty decent wage. And kids living with mommy don't exactly require the same kind of "living wage" as they don't have any real expenses. So now, you raise the bottom to 15, and these kids now make more money. What about those who were making 15 before? Suddenly they're making minimum wage. I'm sure that makes them feel swell! Everyone should get a boost, not just those at the bottom. Probably a combination of that and a bit of a sliding scale to a certain maximum, along with tax reforms to close loop holes for those gaming the system.

Jon Stewart Trashes CNN on 'Larry King Live'

Monsanto man claims it's safe to drink, refuses a glass.

bcglorf says...

Obviously, we are devoid of some context, but the very opening words from 'doctor' is a reference to his not believing that glyphosate is contributing to cancer rates in Argentina, you can drink a quart of it and it won't hurt you.

In this context, it would sound like the claim had been made that round-up usage was causing cancer in Argentina? Unless Argentina is selling round-up as an energy drink, the discussion is in the frame of consumers of food containing products from plants grown in fields that were at some point sprayed with diluted round-up. The good doctor is declaring it far fetched to claim eating something grown in a field that was at some point sprayed with round up is causing cancer. He then exaggerates in his own right observing you can safely drink a quart of it...

As to the typical usage concentration, you are pretty wrong to say most guys will use the max concentration to get the most effect. Spraying a field at 10% costs 10 times as much money as spraying it at 1%, and 100 times as much money as spraying it at 0.1%, which is the span of recommended rates. Guys are going to use the lowest concentration they can while still being confident it will have the effect they want.

I stand by the notion that round-up and glyphosate and vinegar and acetic acid are equally pertinent comparisons in language for expected concentrations of a substance. Nobody uses 100% glyphosate on their field anymore than they use 100% acetic acid on their food.

Nonsense.

If you were a true Christian, you'd follow the laws of the old testament too.

I want to address this scripture quotation first:

Matthew 5:17

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

You have fundamentally misunderstood what Jesus is saying here. What do you think He is talking about? What do you think He means when He said He came to fulfill the law? Please elaborate.. This, however, is what He was talking about:

John 19:28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

He fulfilled what the law and prophets said about Him on the cross.

Luke 24:44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

What did they write concerning Him?

Luke 24:25 And he said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!

Luke 24:26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?"

You need to understand what was written about Jesus and how He fulfilled it before you can understand what He was talking about.

Your misunderstanding of the gospel and Old Testament law not withstanding, a true Christian is not under the old covenant, they are under the new covenant.

Romans 10:4-10 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them.

But the righteousness based on faith says, "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down) "or 'Who will descend into the abyss?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).

But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim);
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

The old covenant is for Israel, the new covenant is for the whole world. Christians are not under law, but grace.

Romans 6:14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

So you can drop the "no true scotsman" fallacy....

It's funny you would invoke this fallacy, yet state earlier "If you were a true Christian.." Yet, according to Jesus, there are true and false Christians:

Matthew 7:21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

A true Muslim follows Allah, and Allah has instructed his followers to exterminate all of the nonbelievers.

German engineers being told they've been targeted by GCHQ

radx says...

Last week, The Intercept published the Quadrennial Intelligence Community Review of 2009 which outlined industrial espionage.

Let's look at the list of German companies in question today: DTAG, NetCologne, Stellar, CETel and IABG. Two internet providers, two operators of satellite communications and a service provider with close ties to Airbus, ESA and EPCIP. All prime targets for industrial espionage, IABG and DTAG in particular.

A penetration of DTAG alone should be quite enough to convince our Attorney General to start an investigation, and the records about the penetration into Stellar's server centre are even more detailed.

So it's not just another violation of Article 10 of our Basic Law, it's industrial espionage. But I know very well that fuck all is going to come out of it, given how subservient our government is.

By the way, Firstlook Media and DER SPIEGEL does not equal Germany.

---------------
Edit:

Sorry for being cranky, anyway. I suppose for people outside Germany the interesting parts are that a) NSA/GCHQ own global communications and b) security for satellite net access is appaling.

The second, in particular, is rather frustrating, given that a great number of users of these are bound to be persons of interest otherwise unreachable through HUMINT. Quite the low hanging fruit, isn't it...
