Happy Twelfth Night! Carnival Begins!

This Carnival Season is very short since Mardi Gras falls on February 5th, 2008. That day is also Super Tuesday (presidential primary elections) for a large group of states. Louisiana's primary is not until February 9th, 2008.

Anyway, the Christmas decorations come down and the Mardi Gras ones go up.

Here's my Mardi Gras wreath:

And here's some trivia about the New Orleans Mardi Gras colors purple, green and gold.

Let the good times roll!

So what kind do you like. McKenzie's is no more. You like Haydel's Bakery, Randazzo's Camellia City, Frances' Bakery or Maurice French Pasteries?

You like the ones with fillings?

There's a chocolate King Cake, but I can't remember who makes that one.

I miss McKenzie's cake doughnuts so much. But for King Cakes, it's almost always been Haydel's. I haven't had Randazzo's since I was a kid and never tried the other two - which is weird since I grew up pretty close to Maurice French Pastries.

I was pretty resistant to fillings at first, but I gotta say, Haydel's cream cheese king cake is pretty damn good.

The holiday decorations come down? Simply wrap a purple, fur-trimmed robe 'round Santa and he makes a great Bacchus. =)~

I haven't had a bit of King Cake yet this season - just ain't right. Consider me another vote for Haydel's cream cheese. Pecans are a nice touch too.

Merry Bacchanalia!

Happy Mardi Gras!!

I stopped by Maurice French's yesterday and had my first piece this morning. Really good stuff. Had to get a cream cheese cake because they had run out of traditionals. I like that they don't overdue it with the cheese, which Haydel's seems to have been doing recently.

Happy Mardi Gras!

I went to a friends on Banks for Endymion. She had smoked pork and turkey, jambalya, red beans 'n' rice, Mexican corn bread, French bread, Caesar salad, potato salad, baked beans and an array of king cakes. There was so much food, she everyone take something home. There was also plenty beer and soft drinks.

Off I go . . .
