Why We Choose Suicide

The basis for the talk is good, but... geez. Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse: "I felt like an asthmatic. Who had lost his glasses. In a hurricane."

... what??

When you feel like you have no breath, and the whirlwind is choking your vision, your senses close down, and there is nothing you can do to breach your cocoon and reach out....

I can see the value in trying to relate to people's experiences in a video like this by taking a very first hand approach rather than talking about it in a very detached / clinical manner. If the description of his feelings seem irrational, it's probably because they were and it's important to convey the nature of that manic thinking.

I don't like his delivery but I like the message at the end. The perception people have of suicide in the US is crazy. It's a health issue and the US has shitty mental health services and a poor understanding of mental health issues... Just throw some powerful drugs on it and it will go away (and make me rich in the process)! On top of that, the US economy is depressing the hell out of a greater number of people, a lot of people after being out of work for a while or not having enough money will just choose to go. So, it's a political issue as well due to the class warfare that has been waged in the US especially since the 80's.

But to add some flame to it - sometimes I wonder if some of the people I know who chose to end it early - made a wise decision just to end it; maybe they thought it through to the nth degree and it was a solid choice - and the remaining mourning people are just selfish "no, you must live in this temporary fucked up little world with ME!!" or "don't remind me that I'm going to die too!" lol

I would have totally thumped on the ass beef who yelled "jump, you coward".

In a perfect world, I would have thrown him over, but we live in this imperfect one where ignorant gimps are protected by laws. Such a shame.

I don't wanna judge people too much who make that decision, cos, you know, who really knows where their mind was at... but wherever it was it wasn't a good place to be making life/death decisions. Terminal illness is perhaps a different story, but ye, if its a mental illness that they have a reasonable chance of recovering from or managing with help, then ye, I don't really know if I'd ever accept it as a "wise" decision.

I don't think it is selfish to want people to stick around because I don't think it comes from wanting them for yourself at all. Would you not stop somebody from self-harming even if they wanted to? Do we not have a responsibility to care for those who are mentally ill, to the point where they are unable or unwilling to care for themselves?
