CHELAN, Wash. -- KOMO photographer Eric Jensen and reporter Steve McCaron were covering an advancing wildfire in the town of Chelan when a tanker carrying fire retardant flew overhead, soaking them in the red liquid.

The retardant, known as slurry, is a mix of water and fertilizer.

I've always wanted to know the actual consistency of that stuff as it makes landfall because viewing it from news footage it always looks misty and too thin to make any actual difference.

(It doesn't look much more substantial here.)
