been there done that, driving thru minnesota during a blizzard, one macho dumbass after another going 70 mph flying off the road into the ditch. evolution in action. don't ever ever leave your car unless it's to dive over the guardrail on the Non-impact side of the road.

mlxsays...

There's no snow inside the tunnel, maybe it's long or the weather just turned bad very quickly. They get hit with a HUGE surprise when coming out. Ouch.

arvanasays...

Looks like the snow turned to freezing rain there -- I've had that happen on the highway myself, it's instant carnage. Of course, the inside of the tunnel wouldn't have been affected, so people would be driving at normal highway speeds. Then they hit the skating rink!

pmkierstsays...

Well arvana, they *entered* the tunnel and considering the weather, it couldn't have been too nice on that side either unless it is an awwwwfully long tunnel. Not to mention, they have eyes (which some were using, and others evidently were not).

Look how many people crash before some genius decides that putting his hazards on might be a good idea.... hazards.... USE EM.... if you drive by me and I have my hazards on while I'm moving, you should figure your about to hit a moose.

Where I live (upstate NY) we curse people who drive around with their hazard lights on because of bad weather. If there's something wrong with your car that limits your speed or if you're stopped on the side of the road, by all means turn them on. Hazard lights in a snow/rain storm or fog tend to strobe-blind nearby drivers who can see that it's snowing/raining/foggy out just as well as you can. Regular marker lights work just fine.

jmdsays...

Overcast, meh, lived in ny all my life, hazard light usage is fine. I use them and see them used as "here I am, and I am going slow as hell or maybe even stoped, slow down or get the hell away from me". If you get strobe blind by red/yellow lights, you got issues with your eyes.

Krupo, considering that the good last half of that clip featured idiot drivers exiting at top speed only to ping pong into other cars, the best action you can do is park your car on the very edge, get out, stay behind the barriers, and hope for the best until theres enough cars piled up behind you. Being in a car while someone smashes into you at 30+mph is just as dangerous as if you ran into a parked object at 30mph.

xxovercastxxsays...

jmd, as I said, using hazards to alert others that you aren't driving, or can't drive, at the same speed as everyone else is fine. The problem with using them in snow or fog is that they illuminate said snow or fog with a large corona effect which makes it rather hard to spot the lines, which is often your best reference when driving in low visibility. If you're driving in pea soup, then you don't need hazard lights to indicate your slow speed as everyone should be driving slow. If someone else is doing 70mph, then they deserve to crash and burn.

Hazard lights are meant to make other drivers aware that you are a potential hazard, not to become one.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag.(show it anyway)

That was hell. Turned out it was a really, really simple problem causing all the woes though- and nothing wrong with the VaroCMS at all. :-)

I actually enjoy remembering bad things that were overcome. It's kind of a temporal schadenfreude and akin to hitting yourself in the head with a hammer because it feels so good when you stop.

The cars start looking like pool balls after a while. Each new one causes the whole pile of pool balls at the bottom of the image to jostle each other around. That's a whole load of silly drivers, and some unfortunate ones too.

Pile Up on Italian Expressway

Sorry about the quality of this vid, appears to be condensation and rain on the camera lens.
--------------------
After slushy snow re-froze on this expressway in Porto San Georgio, Ascoli Piceno, Italy, it created an ultra-slick driving surface. The result was a multi-car pile-up that was captured by an unmanned traffic camera.
