Protesters were trying to stop the truck from leaving and reportedly were approaching with knives to take out the tires. The truck driver had other ideas.

I fully support peaceful protest. This was not peaceful in any way. In fact, the local news tried to blame it on the driver of the truck.

Looked like a failed ambush carjacking.
Driving away fast without stopping until he was well clear of the incident seems like a very smart thing for him to have done.

Anyone know what happened before this? There may have been a reason they were trying to stop the truck.

From all reports they had set up an illegal roadblock and he didn't stop for them to do whatever it was they wanted to do. Once he passed the first part of the roadblock, they attempted to block him and had knives out to slash his tires.

They were also putting out rebar caltrops to puncture tires and had other weapons.

If I were in that situation, surround by hundreds of people trying to block me in, I'd high-tail it outta there as well, motorcycle be damned.
