Yup, that's how it's done at the farm. I do believe that every child should see things like this at an early age- it would in my opinion instill in them more respect for the food we eat. Chicken does not come from the supermarket all nicely packaged in boneless/skinless portions, it comes from a farm.

all those prongs... is that rubber? it works like a charm.

Yup, rubber fingers. The machine I used was different than this... more of a rotating drum- you held the chicken against it as it turned, but same principle. The unit in this video is much slicker and quicker.

Better idea - just hand 'em a hatchet as soon as they're old enough to hold one, and pin one of those delicious beasties down to do the job themselves.

Have you ever seen the baby chicken de-beaking and meat shredding machine? Now THAT is quite the machine.

I've seen those videos. Pretty gruesome for sure, but most chickens do have it better than that. There is a solution however- buy organic and free-range. Myself I don't, but it is an option.

Not yet, at least, but they're working on it. I can't really decide if it'd a victory for science AND humane treatment of animals, or a travesty against nature. Maybe both?

20 years ago or more, as a child, I predicted that meat would be grown ready to eat on shop shelves, for reasons of convenience and freshness. Perhaps I was inspired by the Dish of the Day in the Restauarant at the End of the Universe in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

In 2002 they engineered chickens with no feathers, but now they are seriously talking about growing meat http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-15402552. The reason isn't for convenience or freshness, but due to the resources required to raise animals and the pollution caused.
