Michael Moore v. Fred Phelps (Krazy Anti-Gay Khristian Kult)(1999)

Wumpussays...

This is why Michael Moore is an absolute joke. He takes up homosexuality as his new cause of the day and he goes up against the Westboro Baptist Church? The entire country hates this church, they are the bastion of ultra far right religious intolerance. Not only are they ant-gay, they are anti-military and anti-american. So he rolls up an a pink RV full of homosexualls and baits them to agitate and provoke a purely emotional response rather then debate the full topic, and ultimately makes him look good.

I don't like MIchael Moore, I don't like his film making, and I certainly don't like these baptist nutjobs. But I'd rather watch this...http://www.videosift.com/story.php?id=3969...then watch this clip here because at least Fox News will give these people a fourm to speak their mind so everybody can see how abolutely crazy they are.

This film serves 2 purposes....
1. It makes Micheal Moore look like some great american hero for homosexuals (but he won't touch the fact that they are also anti-military and anti-USA).

2. It makes you feel good for not being anti-gay.

Wumpus implies that homosexuals are both anti-USA and anti-military which is probably news to the homosexuals serving our country in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The only relevant question is whether this bit from 1999 works as a piece of comedy. Fred Phelps should only be featured in comedy bits because he and his flock are not intellectually serious persons.

I realize, of course, that Michael Moore has become a boogeyman of the NeoCon Right much as Ann Coulter has become the Wicked Bitch of the West for the Progressive Left. Nevertheless, both Coulter and Moore have a particular brilliance at working the cable news media and both can be rather funny.

SplinterOfChaossays...

Yeah, Micheal Moore might have substituted serious debate for comedy (he is a dark humored, cynical comedian after all), but that doesn't mean we should dismiss his message. And as the phrase goes "if you talk sense to a fool, he calls you foolish." We all seem to agree that this church group is crazy, can we all agree that they could not be argued with as it would prove nothing for either side?

Although, I wonder if acting flamboyantly gay is a good way to remove stereotypes and minimize hate. But of course, Moore was trying to be a jester, not a messenger.

Wumpussays...

I implied no such thing. I said very explicitly that the Westboro Bastist Church in Anti-Gay. They are also anti-american because the government tolerates homosexuals, they are also anti-military because the military is representative of the government.

While Moore may be pro-gay, he is however anti-military, and anti-USA because he is also a rank socialist. He's not a boogyman, he's a circus act.

SplinterOfChaos is completely right. You fight fire with fire, if these people are going to go a funeral of a gay person and bash them him then they deserve what they having coming to them Micheal Moore makes a point and he does it in a funny dark way

Wumpussays...

I didn't say that either, but when he travels overseas to badmouth the country where he makes millions and it's citizens; which he has done on a number of occations, it counts as anti-American in my book. Secondly, Socialism is a model that encourages mediocrity, punishes success, rules by consensus, and doesn't believe in a strongrnnational defense. Promoting this agenda in a Capitalistic country (i.e. U.S.A.) puts them inherently at odds. If Moore had his way, we'd all be paying 90% of our paychecks to the governement, living off of benifets and entitlements, and raised by a governmental nanny state just like France. *cough*20% unemployment*cough*

I hate to be the one to tell you this, Wumpus, but you're an idiot.
First of all, Westboro Baptist wins by Fox News simply providing them a forum. If you'd be able to get past your seething hatred for Moore, you'd see that making fun of them is far more effective.
And your anti-socialism rant was hysterical. Yes, you've read Ayn Rand, congratulations. You still don't know a damn thing about this country, the world, or its economic systems. Each and every government in the world is a MIXED economy, and would collapse if they completely attempted either extreme. Your diatribe has its paranoid origins in the Red Scare and McCarthyism. If a thought had ever made its way through your empty head, you'd realize what a dolt you look like making such generalizations. Seriously, get help.

rickegeesays...

But we can all agree that Fred Phelps is nothing but trouble, correct?

I too hate rank Socialists, but fresh-smelling ones are among the kindest people on Earth. It is a pity that Stalinism and Soviet Communism wrecked the good name of socialism for the foreseeable future.
