Lars Von Trier stuns Cannes with "I understand Hitler"

Skip to 0:56 for the start of him talking himself into a big, big hole.

"At the press conference for his latest film 'Melancholia', director Lars Von Trier stirs up Cannes with Nazi quips whilst an uncomfortable looking Kirsten Dunst comments on why she wanted to work with the controversial director." - YouTube

he's right though, kudos to him, I definitely respect him a whole lot more. I have more respect for people that ignore sheep or herd like mentality that political correctness tries to force everyone into the same mold.

Guys like this that state an opinion, even if others don't like it are ones I have a lot of respect for and wish more did so.

Today it's become more and more true about freedom of speech though

"True freedom of speech, even offensive, is achieved in it's greatest form in anonymity. "

What's sad is more and more people aren't allowed to state their mine cause people like in comments or media will try and demonize them, so it's becoming more and more prevalent that the only true free speech is in anonymity which is wrong.

Screw Political Correctness and kudos to Lars

My guess is that he means he sympathises with him. That he understand where he was coming from. I don't think there is any more context for this, this clip pretty much encapsulates the entire "hitler" bit he said.>> ^ponceleon:

This seems out of context. I don't quite get what he means by "understand" him.

Bucking political correctness is great; not being part of the herd is likewise great; however neither exclude you from just being an idiot.

"Antichrist" was just terrible; based on what I've read, this man's purpose in life is to create what appears to be high-brow, visually striking art, but it is devoid of real meaningful content or message apart from being shocking or just flat out incoherent. It's the kind of art that you could feverishly try to intellectualize into something amazing, but really you're just circling the drain, and he's laughing at you all the way down.

In other words, he is definitely German.

I feel like this quote was just not coming out the way he wanted it to. He starts out by saying that he wanted to be jewish until he realized he was a nazi. I think he was trying to say that he wanted to identify with the disenfranchised when in fact he was part of the establishment that tramples the underdog.

I mean, I'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. Barring that, he's just an asshole.

I think people are reading too much into this. He was just trying to be provocative, as he is wont to be. He was trolling the audience, essentially. And successfully, I should add -- it was just announced that he's been banned from Cannes, which definitely seems like an overreaction.

Of course, what the man is saying is taboo -- and socially awkward -- which for all intents and purposes is what an encounter with von Triers (cinematic or in vivo) is going to be about.

In my limited exposure/understanding of the man and his films, if von Triers is "for" anything at all, it is the liminal ambiguity that lays beneath that which individuals and society deems to be "settled" matters -- if only to provoke the discomfort needed to elicit societal changes or individual learning. (See "Manderlay," "Dogville," "The 5 Obstructions," "Boss of it All" et. al., for example.)

And Hitler happens to be one such so-called "settled" matter, for better or worse.

Sarzy is right. Lars is a professional troll. Every film he makes, every word he says seems to be designed to provoke and challenge your expectations. He is also a first rate director, who even at his worst, makes thoughtful, well crafted films. Even the nauseating 'Anti-Christ' was beautifully executed.

Issy and I just recently saw Dogville and loved it. It's a brutal indictment of America, and in particular, the kind of glorified small town 'heartland' America that many Americans find sacred. It's a slow burn, so don't give up in the first act.
