Angry cat spots enemy cat through window

...and don't come back.

It's not like they're flippantly reacting to any stimulus when they're like this, and a lot of the time they are acting to protect you as well as their territory. Cat's are smart enough to know the difference between a threat and their owner trying to reassure them.
I used to have a cat who would body-slam the window at full speed and scream at any cat she saw outside, she was so insanely violent. We would reassure her all the time, pet her and tell her it was okay. She never turned on us, nor has any other cat who has been in fight or flight mode that we would try to reassure.
It's when the fight starts that you don't want to be near them, because then they can't make the distinction and you're liable to come away with a shredded limb.

Wow ... why would one try to pet the kitty when it's in that state? Idiot!

My ex-girlfriends cat would try to dive bomb me from the second floor. Never had an animal hate me as much as that cat. I had stop going to her apt. 5 mins inside was 40 mins of cleaning claw marks later and not the good kind of claw marks.
