A DIY Rail Gun! 1.25kJ Homemade Magnetic Coilgun

This is a video of some guy creating a friggen' rail gun in his house. He uses it to launch (explode) common household appliances.

This is the next in my series of extreme (bordering in lunacy) DIY projects and legal, purchasable items.

Apart from being one of the coolest thing I've ever seen a DIY'er make, I have to wonder what upside could possible counter the dangers of the thing. It is really cool, don't get me wrong, but seriously? Launching small items with 1.25kJ of force is beyond dangerous. It's not as powerful as a .45, for example, but it would definitely kill someone.

I was actually (perhaps in a naive way) hoping for the capacitors to become so full that the energy created from the magnetic field would be enough to rip apart a toaster. The projectile shattered not only the toaster's glass, but also my dreams...

I wish he would use it on some actual materials like wood/stone/steel etc to at least TRY and display penetrating power, instead of shooting it at model airplanes and plastic ramps.

The toaster oven KINDA showed that, but I'm just wondering why it looks like he spent 99% of his time dedicated to design(which is pretty awesome) but very little thought on what to actually shoot at.

Gunpowder, your future is safe for now.

Good railgun effort. Looks like it was done for a uni project but maybe the guy is very enthusiastic and did it for fun! I was misled by the video's description, I thought he'd be using the railgun to launch domestic appliances

With the energy demonstrated, except for shot to temple at close range perhaps, not lethal.
Still, with refinement....

I formally disagree.

You can poison tip the end, give it a barb or two, assemble some fashion of exploding tip.

Or make the projectile more sleek and pointed to go through or between a rib.

or bleed out... gangrene..

lots of ways to die from this thing, I wish not to count thee ways though.

LMFAO...cafe everywhere.

Of course, a GRF(Gibsonesque Rail Fletcher),...I want....

.027kJ of force applied to 1" diameter of surface area needed to break skull bone. This is 1.25kJ. Even considering the drop off due to distance and air resistance, it would definitely crack a skull and would likely lodge itself in someone's brain. The temple is one of the few places where a small puncture can kill someone. Ergo: Don't build this then shoot someone in the head with it.
