It looks to me like in order to get enough moment arm on the machine to control your lean to one side the weight of the bike and motor is raised a good 12" higher off the ground than would otherwise be necessary. It appears that if you hit any kind of solid object (like a rock) while in one of those slides it would be an instant flip.

I'd like to see an example of this with the center of gravity a good foot or more lower before I'd be convinced of stability.

The Skewed Views of Science

This should be required viewing in as part of all academic programs that include the 'weaknesses and objections' to major scientific theories like geological history and evolution. It does a good job of laying out what science is and is not about in a factual way.

Red Light Runners - Police Video

vermonter says...

What is the decrease in accidents? Red light cameras are working if they decrease accidents. The violations are only in place because they appear to put people at risk of accidents.

Still, pretty amazing video.

[Edit - also if you look at number two, the accident occurs at the far side of the intersection and just after the accident the lights switch up to red. I vote BOO and sensationalism, as it is only the car that is not involved in the accident (the one following) that is in violation.]

The Memristor Will Replace RAM and the Hard Drive

vermonter says...

jonny,

I think the part you are missing is the possibility of changes of order of magnitude. For example, what if I could just default to having a videocamera built into the edge of my eyeglasses and simply record everything I do 24/7 in beyond HD detail? Right now that would require far more memory than I can afford, but it would also eliminate much current note taking, minutes of meetings, even allow you to "go back in time" for snapshots.

What if I wanted to transmit that data over my cell phone to someone else to watch at the same time? What if 10 Billion people on Earth wanted to do the same thing?

I know squat about the memristor, but I do believe that the possibilities for computing technologies in particular are still ripe for orders of magnitude changes. It may be that vacuum tube computers were like the water wheel and transistors the steam engine. If so we still have a lot of room for improvement in efficiency and convenience.

3,100,000 cubic feet of material would cover 400 acres to a depth of 2 inches. So, I think what they mean is that 400 acres of land has been impacted, in some areas depths are 4 to 6 feet. Not to downplay this tragedy, but it isn't helped by confusing the facts. What is really important is how much material is left when the water evaporates, and what heavy metals or other toxic substances are in that material.

Upvoted for importance.
