Rally To Restore Sanity - Closing Speech

tsquire1 says...

Its good to see so many people out and taking a political stance. The problem of course is that 'moderates' don't accomplish anything, even with a majority in other branches of government.

Also, as a Marxist, I can tell you that I am not one hand with the other being homophobes. I'm not even on the same body. We are the ones, however, that actually go FIGHT the far right elements that are increasing in this country

Teacher totally flips out captured (of course) on cellphone

tsquire1 says...

To blame this scenario on teacher's unions is fucking ridiculous. To blame the quality of public education on the teacher's or their unions (which, like all unions these days are weak) is also fucking ridiculous. Don't blame the teachers who are trying to educate our society, blame the system that they are forced to operate under.

What is that system? Neoliberal policies that deny basic funding, the support of pedagogical practices that operate (as we have seen from this video) under power hierarchies. I would recommend reading Althusser's piece "Ideology and the Ideological State Apparatuses" http://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/althusser/1970/ideology.htm

In it, he describes how the most power ISA is the public education system. It is here that children are indoctrinated 5 days a week, 8 hours a day in an ideology that reinforces the relations of production (exploitation of the Proletariat). To assume however, that if we had private institutions that we could avoid this is missing the point. Private education represents a continual push to prevent the Proletariat from having any sort of commons. Private education is the latest attempt to exploit the people even further and deny people their human needs. It also shows, and this is frightening, that in order to make up for the current economic crisis, there is a push to permenantly restructure the way people are educated. Private education will deny access to marginalized communities...I'll stop this rant.

The Pathology of White Privilege

tsquire1 says...

If there was a thumbnail of Tim and the name of the video was 'white privilege', bet more white folk would watch it as opposed to a vid with a thumbnail of a person of color talking about white privilege, yah mean?

Regardless, Tim wise is mighty good and his incorporation of class analysis boosts his points with me.

This place is so nice because it's built on slavery (unpaid labor) and the stolen labor of the developing world. Systems are connected, and you can only live like a king if you are standing on the backs of better men and women.

Woman Enraged Over Chicken Nuggets

tsquire1 says...

I take this as a prime example of the degradation of human spirit and will. We could be so beautiful, but the systematic alienation and oppression of our species by our species leads to shit like this. Its not that she is just 'a wacko', but there should be no McDonalds, no broken home she is a part of, and no substitution for soul by McNuggets. We have to understand that actions and situations like this are INHERENT given the relationships we have to each other as well as the means of production for our society

Valedictorian Speaks Out Against Schooling

tsquire1 says...

Public education is facing permanent shuffling around the world. The public's wealth is becoming private business and profit potential. No longer students, words being used are 'customers'. The ability to think is no longer needed in the labor force. Hence a 60 day occupation by students in Puerto Rico and a growing student movement across the US. Education is a human right!

'Just Say Now': Campaign To Legalize Marijuana

tsquire1 says...

god that guy on the left is SUCH a tool! Is this really how discussions are had on TV? Let two people speak at the same time, letting the space break down into two babbling talking heads? Woman was dead on though.
Heres the thing y'all. Challenging the drug laws challenges the prison-industrial complex, one of the most powerful industries in our country. They enable the state to control the population in ways that are incredibly difficult to break out of. This is why Marijuana hasn't been legalized yet. These drug laws allow for the corporate fuckers to control populations, something that is essential to maintain the realization of profit from the working class.

What we need are SOCIAL MOVEMENTS, not elected officials. Challenge this shit in your daily lives! All power to the people!

Israeli Woman Finds Out BF Is Arabic, Sues Him For Rape

tsquire1 says...

Whoa. Although the racism here is apparent, the situation itself is still complex. Consent is absolutely consensual, and to compare the situation of a male withholding information to a women with its antipode is to ignore the reality of a patriarchal society where men benefit substantially for gender privilege. With that in mind, examining this situation requires one to look at what it means for a man to withhold information to a woman, explicitly for sexual purposes as alleged in this case. Under those conditions, the relationship becomes exploitative. And yes, this can occur the other way around, but that wouldn't be perpetuating an exploitative relationship that has been strong for hundreds of years now. We have to see this situation in the larger context, thats crucial in determining any moral critique. With that in mind, what was the information that was withheld? He was an Arab in an apartheid state. Is that grounds to declare rape?

We can't know what his intentions were. Was he moving for sex or was he in love? The context is vital to determining how exploitative their relationship was. If the alleged case is true, then he is at fault. However, the fact that he is an Arab and now is in prison shows two things. One, that the woman is playing an active part in maintaining the apartheid in Israel and two: their relationship didn't seem to have much substance.

AU 60 Minutes - BP Oil Disaster (Infuriating!)

tsquire1 says...

Might get removed again soon.

So, lets think about this y'all. What is the primary drive of our economic system, capitalism? Profit. Profit runs our world. Corporations need profit in order to invest, creating economic growth. It was profit that caused BP to disregard safety procedures, pick up production and further exploit their workers. It was profit that caused BP to worry about collecting oil as much as they could, instead of covering the leak. It was profit that prevented BP from stopping rig early when there were clear signs of danger.

Profit, because they have to. You cannot reform capitalism's primary drive. Regulations were in place already. Its that they weren't enforced. Why? Because the regulators have been bought out by corporations. Our government is owned by corporations, the logical conclusion under capitalism.

This greed is literally destroying our planet. How much longer are we going to sit by our computer screens? Its time to get organized and take to the streets. Its time to stop this shit, because our planet wont survive.
