B Dolan-which side are you on?

I voted up this video just before the ending with the mask. Whatever, the message is generally good, but I hate the whole mask thing. Fuck anonymous.

The United States of America is a constitution-based federal republic with a strong democratic tradition.

(under the "government" heading)

(in previous years that line read "democratic tendencies")

Thanks for the book review.

No Bob, just no. That is not correct on any point. (except that we were a republic...but a democratic representative republic)
I went to one of the best private schools in America, Kinkaid in Houston, and they DID teach civics (and history) quite well, thank you.
Last year I also read a great book about what really happened, taken directly from the notes of those who were there at the Philadelphia constitutional convention in 1787, called "Miracle At Philadelphia" which I suggest you read.
We have always been a democratic representative republic. It was what the founding fathers set up. It is not a 'trend' of the last few centuries. I can't fathom what you are referencing.
Perhaps you reference us having the electoral college, which are 'elected' representatives that actually elect our governing representatives, as opposed to a true direct democracy? That is not a new, or evolving thing either.
The constitution is not a history lesson, it's a civics lesson. Miracle at Philadelphia is history. Check it out.

I agree. It starts with "Shut up and calculate" and ends with nothing useful. I'm not sure we're moving forward with anything but mathematical masturbation at this point. It's very frustrating.

I thought it was presented pretty well as an overview of the concept. It's a BBC doc, not a course at a university.

Is this a field of study for you? I'm curious to hear what exactly you think was wrong. I'm not a fan of quantum mechanics in general either btw.

He talks in unjustifiably certain terms about a lot of theses things. Science is not religion, the experiments are very imperfect and the interpretations are still all debated. He does qualify his statements a bit but we still have infinitely more to learn than we know now, we cannot make conclusions yet.

It looks ok, but he's only getting low 40s for a framerate. That is gonna be jerky as hell, and really hard on your stomach. VR certainly has potential, but I'm not sure whether this current generation will deliver on the hype.

I disagree. He gave an answer. I think removing the corruption of money from politics and making corporations pay their fair share in taxes would go a long way towards making things better.
Well, maybe it's not enough of an answer, but how about we just start there and see how it goes?

Russell Brand is honestly not helping himself here. He flat out did not answer the question. Banking and investment may well not be taxed enough, but it's not single-handedly going to do anything about any supposed overcapacity in services. For anyone concerned about that, it is a non answer.

An intelligent answer that actually answered the question would have been either referencing the lump of labour fallacy or the long term benefits of a (generally younger) immigrant population on supporting tax for a country that is ageing and has a diminishing working age population.

Even something more waffly like multiculturalism bringing new innovative prespectives, creativity and productivity would have been a better answer.
