Big Budget Hollywood Movie About Noah's Ark with Russel Crow

rychan says...

Well... Before watching the trailer I found it hard to imagine how this could possibly be a good movie, but the conflict between people going on the boat and the people left behind is sort of interesting... although then again, it makes you think about how millions of people were murdered. I mean it's a holocaust, and the protagonists of this movie helped ensure its effectiveness.

Skydivers Escape Two Airplanes in Midair Collision

rychan says...

That's very interesting that NBC _licensed_ the footage. That's damn smart of the skydivers -- they deserve to get money for this. But it does seem like an ethical gray area for the news agencies. Was there a bidding war? Is that common?

Gambit: Another Useless X-Man Gets Fired

rychan says...

I think the actor who plays Gambit here does such a perfect job of making him likeable and pathetic. Every little gesture is great -- the point with "really hard", the mumbling about needing to throw the playing cards around a bit, the surprise when he's fired.

Really nice production.

Stephen Fry and Jonathan Ross Discuss Language Evolution

rychan says...

How ridiculously well spoken Stephen Fry is in the last minute of this. How can you come up with that kind of monologue off the cuff? That seems impossible.

Louis CK on Daily Show. My Two Favorite Things.

I'm just worried about the next kid that wants to get on the cover of Rolling Stone while expressing his grievances in a heinous way.

Attention doesn't motivate all terrorists, but it motivates many of them. Consider the unabomber, who explicitly demanded attention (forcing major newspapers to print his manifesto) in order to stop his attack spree.

People are just unhappy because his picture doesn't make him look like what they think a terrorist should look like. They called him a monster right next to it, but people are grumpy that his picture doesn't fit the narrative.

The Hero's Journey

rychan says...

Hilarious and well done.

But as for the Hero's Journey / monomyth... I don't know. It's like you took the 7 most popular tropes off of tvtropes.com. Yes, they're very common story elements. But you could keep coming up with 8th, or 9th, or 47th most common story tropes. Do these 7 really cluster together frequently? Are they common in literature and the classics?

Grand Theft Auto V - First Gameplay Trailer

rychan says...

I really like this trailer. Not just the content, which is fantastic, but the way it was produced. The narration actually talk to the audience as if they are adults, something that few game trailers do. I'm thinking of lots of idiotic E3 presentations which seem aimed at 13 year olds.

This trailer has a certain seriousness and forwardness which I love.

Hannibal Buress adds diversity to one of his college shows

rychan says...

I normally don't like "meta" pieces. It seems to easy to target the activity you're doing. "Hey, I'll do comedy about doing comedy!" or "Let's make a TV show about all the crazy stuff you run into when making a TV show!". But this was a seriously smart dissection of a bad article.
