Crow Trolls Polar Bear

When I visited Tokyo, those crows [look more like ravens] were one of the coolest unexpected attractions. They're all over the parks and they're very smart.

The Best Beaver Experience of My Life!

Yeah, but still, he's literally laying on top of their home.

I've been to a very popular park lake which had a beaver family and they were somewhat used to the teeming tourists (and their dogs), but not at all to this degree.

Lots of houses in the background, so they may be used to gawking humans, although this guy gets pretty close. Cool video. I like how he changed from triple rainbow guy into Marlin Perkins at about the two and a half minute mark.

The Honest Coca-Cola Obesity Commercial

rychan says...

What B.S. The health risks of diet colas are very tenuous. And the health risks of normal colas are pretty much the same as any other sugary treat. Even then, there's very little evidence that sugary treats are linked to insulin resistance. Obesity is linked to insulin resistance, though.

Bill Burr on Getting a Gun

Pools are well-regulated. There are guidelines on access control and insurance liability. It would be good if guns had more regulation than swimming pools. Guns aren't just a risk to your family (and statistically, they are a MASSIVE risk to you family), they are a risk to everyone. It's hard to take a concealed swimming pool into a movie theater and drown everyone.

Anyway, nobody is trying to take away your guns. Although I wouldn't really be opposed to it (e.g. I'd be happy living in one of the many peaceful nations with strict gun control laws). I've been hunting and skeet shooting a handful of times and I think it's fair to say that long rifles and shotguns are a part of American culture for a hundred plus years. But I wouldn't care if all semi-automatic handguns and rifles were banned.

If you listen to the director's commentary (I saw him talk at Siggraph 2012), he basically agrees with you up until the point where he quits his job. The director says that the main character is being a wimp and hasn't done anything to deserve the woman until he shows the courage to really go after her.

Of course, that's just the fairy tale logic. Yes it's a bit stalkerish and impulsive.

Yes, that's the kind of love we and our children should all aspire to, the kind where you see someone much better looking than you who is so uninterested they don't hesitate to board a train. But no worries- as long as you watch them through a window and stalk them long enough, you'll be able to compel them to reciprocate.

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm Opening Cinematic

rychan says...

Maybe it's in the "uncanny valley" of CGI trailers where it almost COULD be gameplay, thus it's more frustrating. The WoW trailers are so completely unrelated from the actual gameplay that it doesn't even make me think of the gameplay.

I'd like to think that some more dramatic scale variations are possible with mousewheel zoom. Heck, even if visual scale doesn't change so much, economic and gameplay scale COULD. What if a battlecruiser took 3000 minerals, 1500 gas, 30 pop, and had a corresponding level of ass kicking?

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm Opening Cinematic

rychan says...

This cinematic is amazing, technically, although it is sort of frustrating when you then have to go play the ACTUAL game and:
(1) Units are nearly the same size, there's not this epic scale difference between battlecruisers and marines.
(2) You have a pop limit of 200, so you probably don't have more than 60 or 70 office units charging in, not the thousands shown here.
(3) Ultralisks can't actually step on things and squish them
(4) Nydus canals can't actually pop up in battles and be useful, because they're made of wet tissue paper.
(5) Things aren't so amazingly beautiful.

I'm being nitpicky, but the cinematic is great and it kind of makes you think "wow, that WOULD be a cool game" and then you have to go and play SC2, which admittedly is still a very, very well designed game.
