Either way, having been in management, I agree that it would benefit everyone if it was transparent, as it keeps everyone honest. That said, taking a formerly private disclosure and making it public would be a disaster; it's kind of amazing how some people make what they do doing the same job.

I think the little gem in here they mention briefly is that this is really one of the only ways to battle the big guys (Google/Facebook/Netflix/etc., at least in my locale). It's well known that top talent will go there for a big payday (the little guys are basically paying for training and filtering out the low performers), however I have seen many times employees stick at a lower salary job that is far more flexible with their time.

I think it's fascinating to see the history here; at this point some of these games seem to carry on tropes like a kind of tradition (RE,MGS,etc.).

But as I get older, it becomes pretty apparent how embarrassingly juvenile these are. And having worked in the gaming industry, it's depressing that grown men and women commit this into a game without really thinking about it.

Fortunately, I worked at a more progressive studio that was very aware of these kinds of decisions; so there is definitely an evolution happening (albeit slowly).

I've tried to dig this up myself, but as I think it's universally agreed, the categorization of crime and the regional differences makes it hard to make an apples to apples comparison. As much as I can see, the US crime rate is low and getting lower, however the percentage of gun homicide is still much higher than comparable G8 countries and is a worthwhile discussion:

Whoa ! I had almost the same sales pitch from a girl with the SAME product a few months ago. It was like a stand-up routine in fast-forward. She was hilarious and told me to watch out for her on Comedy Central. I totally remember because the part of the pitch when she 'drank' the cleaning solution sold me. Also, she likewise saw hardwater stains on my window and scrubbed them out on the spot.

Needless to say, she sold me. I wonder how they are recruiting these folks ?
