Cassini observes Enceladus

8727 says...

Enceladus is not visible from the Earth with the naked eye, but can be seen with a telescope.

'The main obstacle in discovery of Enceladus was it's small angular distance from Saturn. It's brightness is 11.8m (almost 209 times fainter than the faintest stars visible to naked eye). For comparison: Saturn's brightness is about 0.7m, so Enceladus is shining fainter by about 11.1m.

The corresponding difference in brightness is over 27.5 thousand times!'

surely it's more complex than that, as the big bang was needed too. the curled up strings coming after the infinitely dense singularity. random fluctuations leading to this reality and those types of curled up dimensions.

Hitchens: Religion is man-made (and absurd)

8727 says...

thepinky,
your argument is worse than hitchens', when you say 'false religion' - is that supposed to mean there is a true religion?
and what's 'god is the perfect being' supposed to mean? which god, what about polytheisms?...
i could go on, but i'd just like to point out that someone that believes in young-earth creationism (that disagrees with evolution) isn't fully able to grasp the implications of what we've discovered with science.
theism in itself is just a point of view, like atheism, but being religious is indoctrination and poisoning of the mind by writings that we now know can't be true.

hopefully in the future people will be called up on spreading lies on billboards, so the religious ones would have to be pulled down - and the ones made by freethinkers would be the only ones standing.

Random Observations pertaining to 9/11 by Malcolm Gladwell

8727 says...

it's not that they're increasing in severity, it's that those that are seriously planned will be the ones that will be successful. there are other factors, but them getting more and more severe (somehow exponentially) isn't one of them - that's unfounded.
