Zero Punctuation: The Last of Us

Yahtzee falls into the same trap a lot of people seem to be falling into, being completely ignorant of how people act when society crumbles. He judges everyone and everything in this game for how they act, like murdering desperate fuckholes, when everythings gone to hell. Why not do some research, read about what happens during a genocide or a warzone. Maybe he thinks that like people are taught in school that WW2 bombed out London was the citizens finest hour where they all pulled together, when in actuality it was swarming with criminals and yes murder.

I can understand the judgments of this game being predictable, it really is but that didn't bother me. What bothers me is people not thinking about what they would be prepared to do if the chips were down. When you're being attacked from all sides you put the biggest bastard psychopath in charge if he can get you out of it. If it's just you, YOU become that psychopath bastard. It's why Joel was still alive in that world for 20 years, how do people think you survive in such a world?

I see people whining about this too, and I've seen it when I played Tomb Raider. The Last of Us is not Tomb Raider, yeah it controls the game but it's less dance dance revolution and more experimentation with how to clear or get by an area.

In short, this is a really good Game, despite all the times it takes control away from the player, to me it was never intrusive and it always served a purpose. I simply loved playing it.

Last of us seems to blur the line between gaming and movie...THIS IS NOT A GOOD THING!!!

Hardly anyone has, look at Kotaku, they praise the game and try to intellectualize Joel and Ellie and the story and the world away. They're idiots, anyone with life experience or especially with kids understands that this game is powerful. It's morality is interesting and complicated, not just "Joels the bad guy that you get to play."

Yeah, I think that while he has usually been very insightful in most game reviews, I think that he just didn't get this one at all.

Loved the experience (story, characters, dialogue, world, atmosphere, etc), but the gameplay was terrible. The design of the game mechanics was fine (the crafting system was nicely done), but the mechanics were very poorly put together leaving it feeling clunky and becoming so damn infuriating. Not as infuriating as appalling mess that was Uncharted 3, but not of the quality of other games.
If the other aspects of the game weren't so damned good, I'd have returned it well before finishing it.

Great game. There were way too many unexpected plot directions for this to be considered predictable. Two of the things Yahtzee criticizes in this review (the psychotic nature of every faction in the game and the "I got mine" selfish ending) were directly related. In the end, SPOILER ALERT the inhabitants of this psychotic shoot-first world were not worth saving, or at least not worthy of Ellie's sacrifice, and the fact that Joel lies to her so she can't even consider making that sacrifice was a nice cherry on top. It was a gutsy, thought provoking ending. How often do video game plots make you ponder bigger questions?

Negative reviews are Yahtzee's schtick. If he started making positive reviews, no one would watch them.

Smart guy.

I haven't actually played The Last of Us. I watched a 6hr youtube video and enjoyed the story. I would have watched a shorter version with most of the gameplay skipped, but it lost too much of its continuity. From watching the gameplay I dont think I really missed out on much from not playing the game. The "puzzle" sections in particular looked awful.

So yah. I watched The Last of Us and it kinda seemed to me like the developers just want to make films. I'm not sure how much worth is really gained from bland interactivity when they could just do away with it entirely and not compromise at all on the story. That said, I enjoyed Bioshock Infinite and I the story was somewhat enhanced by playing it even if the gameplay was somewhat mediocre. Seems a lot of people liked "playing" The Last of Us (although I think a similar number enjoyed watching it too) I just struggle to define it as a game. That might also be why a "game" critic has a lot of negative things to say about it.

ps. I wonder if they'll start pulling those youtube vids for copyright infringment.

I think there's a big difference between playing a game simply for story and watching a movie. To me, you can feel more connected to the protagonists, feel more empathy. For instance, all the shit that happens to the protagonists not only happen to them but also you. There's a stronger disconnect when simply watching someone on a screen go about the actions.

And when a developer really delves into the non-linear narrative, it can be a far more interesting and rewarding an experience, piecing together elements noticed in the world and identifying their meaning to the story at large.

For me, while The Last of Us would've worked well as a movie, the experience was unique and more enjoyable as a game, despite it's many gameplay flaws. It's not the best example of what story telling could be in a video game, but it's a damn good one
