What Zack Snyder lacks in general directing skills, he makes up for exponentially with his action scenes. Because of those actions scenes, Man of Steel was the first super hero film I actually enjoyed in almost forever. I get that most people loathe that film, but for me it delivered on what's been lacking from the "super hero" genre since its introduction to film: super-human, appropriately-sized destruction and chaos.

I actually liked 300 and Watchmen; his other stuff, not so much.

Snyder seems to have an excellent sense of style in his films, but this critique is mostly about the writing. (FWIW, I haven't seen 300, but enjoyed Watchmen.)

So the problem is shitty writers? Fair enough, but I think shitty writers of Superman outweigh good writers by a significant ratio.

In fact, the only writer I've ever seen do a truly good job with Superman was Alan freaking' Moore. The problem with Superman isn't that he isn't relatable, it's that it's hard to give him an interesting challenge.

Batman is at his best (story wise) when he's vulnerable and has to solve a problem. It's hard to write Superman without him just being more powerful.

It's impossible for me not to ask if you've read All-Star Superman and Red Son.

Have read Red Son... great story, although I'm not sure it counts as it's not the "standard" Superman character.

I'll admit I haven't read All-Star, and I've heard good things.
