Wow. I had heard bits of this, but Xerox really dropped the ball.

Just goes to show the importance of having young people up in higher management, or at least listened to.
Pretty awesome stuff, just imagine how much further we'd be if Jobs had also thought of stealing Ethernet and email.

I remember the bit where Adele Goldberg refused to give the demonstration because it would give away Xerox PARC's work to someone else.

It's from a PBS-series (in three parts) called "Triumph of the Nerds".. It's a great series, and well worth watching!

More accurately this could be called "Where your OS really came from."

It's a shame, really. You have to wonder where we'd be now if Xerox upper management had their priorities in order. PARC was 10-20 years ahead of the times depending on which technology you look at; Ethernet LAN, WYSIWYG, WIMP GUI, laser printers, InterPress and OOP; and Xerox abandoned the project because they were afraid computers would destroy the paper business.
