WEP cloaking - wireless encryption is broken: how to fix it

Something educational for the Sift.

Basically, they explain how they plan to stop cracking tools from hacking into wireless signals. Includes some introductory information to get you up to speed quickly.

Video is from DefCon 15 - "The Emperor Has No Cloak, Web Cloaking Exposed" lecture, how to confuse web crackers with "chaff" to get the compromised WEP standard to keep working successfully.

Experts recommend using WPA encryption instead of WEP.

Long lecture, but interesting for people who want an insight into the technology geekworld.

Featuring researcher Vivek Ramachandran.

if the network is hidden, it's less likely to become a target.

as for wifi sniffers, if someone is determined, they can get through anything, but are you really that much of a target when there's an access point right next door that's wide open?

in theory, multiple levels of authentication/protection is always a good idea, but if you're a target in the first place it will only slow down the attackers. they'll still get through with the right tools and knowledge.

That's just it, turning off SSID broadcast doesn't hide the network at all.

effectively, yes it does. though you cannot mask the RF signal, you can prevent the open-invitation that SSID broadcasting enables.
true enough though, that wardrivers will likely just keep on going if they see WPA2/AES. unless you've got something they really want, it's not worth the time and effort.
