Nice post. It reminds me of something interesting I learned about the moon recently. It's surface is like a fractal. Viewed from a distance of 100 kilometers, it looks the same as viewed from 2 kilometeres - because it's pitted all sizes of craters, different distances just bring different sized craters into the range of visibility.

I was reading that this made it very difficult for the Apollo guys to judge distances by eye.
