This type of materialism just creates a short-term increase in enjoyment, and then things go back to normal.

After the initial newness has passed, watching movies will go back to only being as fun as watching them on your computer monitor (which is fine).

He could have saved himself hundreds of thousands of dollars.

This is all true, but did you not see the sweet hidden button in the bust of Shakespeare? THAT would never get old.

Maybe you're right, but I get the feeling that he's a happier person MINUS hundreds of thousands of dollars PLUS batcave than he would be PLUS the money MINUS the cave. His money to spend; he can do so how he likes.

I spend hundreds of dollars (possibly a comparable percentage of my total income as this dude's batcave compared to his income) on aquariums, fish, plants, pumps, fish food, etc. etc. etc. Plenty of people might think that is crazy and unnecessary; yet I don't regret any of that money I've spent.

Can't take it with me, might as well enjoy whatever short-term increases in enjoyment I can, I figure. At least, as long as said short-term increases in enjoyment don't have consequences that lead to long-term problems.

Said by someone without a bat cave with a 120" movie screen.

Totally disagree. He has been a lifelong Batman fan and looks to be living his dream. His family seems to dig it too. Why do you think enjoying something can't be "normal"?

Anyway, isn't going out to a restaurant, or to a hockey game, or out to a movie simply spending money on short-term enjoyment? Buying a new car? Magic Mountain? Isn't an enjoyable life just a long string of short-term enjoyments? If you had a choice, every time you wanted to watch a movie, between your computer and the awesome 120" bat cave theater, you think the computer would be "as fun"? I'm sad for you.

I think the difference is that hundreds of thousands of dollars are of real use to humankind. I'd be happier investing that money, knowing that the company I invested in is doing stuff for humankind.

Or invest the money in your kids' abilities, and put them on an elite life track.

And if previous generations had spent less money on temporary pleasure, we'd have cured aging already. So when humankind just wants to have fun, your life is on the line.

That's fair. Yes, I don't think we should place much value on fun itself.

I think we're happiest when we derive our pleasure from things we built and from continually increasing our abilities.
